In The Lime Light #AuthorSpotlight – E.M. Bosso

SMAFU

.

Although it has, indeed, been some while, I have not forgotten about spotlighting my fellow authors/poets/bloggers through my In The Lime Light posts.  Life just took me away for a short time. Still, good things come to those who wait (Good things being the amazing author I am about to share with you and those who wait, of course, being YOU!)

I met E.M.Bosso via a Facebook writing group, and it did not take much time for me to realize that his writing is not only poignant and extremely relevant, with a conscience that appealed to me, but witty and entertaining as well.  So I invited him to participate in a LimeLight and he agreed (admittedly he had no idea what he was getting into, but let that go).   Curious to know more? Fantastic…then let’s get on.

Hello Michael.  Please tell us about You, Your Bio:   As a young man I always wanted to be a writer, I just didn’t know it. Telling stories, having dreams, building a fictional reality that allowed me to cope with “normal” people became an outlet for creativity that was bubbling inside. After all, how much fun is it to sit in a restaurant and assume the couple at the next table were just ordinary people having dinner? Much more entertaining to imagine them discussing world domination, or plotting their next great bank heist. (If that was you, sorry about the strange looks.)

As time went by, and my kids no longer believed I was a Pirate-Spy working for the Antarian secret service plotting their intergalactic takeover of the fast food industry, I decided to take my imagination out into the real world and let total strangers judge, rate, and post reviews on the quality of my mad writing skills. So far… so good.
(I would tend to agree!)

The real world of “Michael” (yes I actually refer to myself in the third person, doesn’t everyone?) is pleasant but nowhere near as exciting as my stories. I’ve been a shoe salesman, phone salesman, nuts and bolts stacker, television repair assistant, designer of computer systems, non-profit worker, lobbyist, banker, VP of a large banking institution, stock broker, financial advisor, husband, dad, son and brother. Pretty standard stuff compared to a dreamwalker, or mass murdering avenging angel.
(I think you forgot amazing writer, which isn’t as diabolical as an avenging, mass-murdering angel, but potentially just as interesting.)

Please Introduce us to your Blog.  What is it all about?   What sorts of posts do you lean towards?   My website is designed to not only showcase my current and previous novels, but to delve into some of the more controversial topics that my novels deal with.  A novel is a story and generally has a beginning and an end.  But real life issues continue on long after the novel is done.  Currently I am showcasing an online memorial wall for the victims of Rape and Physical Abuse.  Far too often we as society get up in arms about a current horrendous crime.  We yell and scream with outrage until something else catches our attention.  The women involved are abandoned and left as the world focuses on the next biggest thing.  I would like a place for their stories to live until the world is unable to forget.  Only then will the conversations that need to occur really happen.  After the outrage is gone and the truth remains.
(a truly compassionate and brilliant idea! and for those who are interested, here’s the link:  http://www.embosso.net/ )

What Inspires and stirs your creativity?  Mostly anger and outrage… lol.  I’m just kidding, my creativity is inspired by real life events and wild dreams.  I’ve been told several times I’m a naked writer, my emotions carry over to my words and I drag the reader into my world for a short time.  As such, my inspiration comes from within and bleeds out through my fingers as I type away mindlessly on my keyboard.
(I wouldn’t agree with mindlessly, but let’s not argue) 🙂

Conversely, what do you find difficult to write about?  The hardest thing for me to write about, or talk about, or even really think about is myself.  It is always easier to write and talk about others than to examine our own inner minds.  Although… with my particular mind I think that’s probably safer and better for all.  Lol

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/writing?  My blog and my novels all have one overriding message.  There is hope and love in the world as well as misery and violence.  Communication, understanding, and following a dream can all result in a better world.  Whether it’s a failing relationship or recovering from a brutal attack, there is always hope and people willing to offer their kindness if you open yourself up and allow them in.
(I couldn’t agree more!)

Tell us about your book(s): Currently I have two published works with several in progress.  SMAFU (Situation Married All Fucked Up) is a story of a troubled marriage.  It’s a place that many people can identify with.  The couple has grown distant and apart, there isn’t much hatred and still a lot of love but time and apathy have ruined whatever chance at happiness they may have had.  A wise and elderly neighbor shares her wisdom and advice.  She may or may not be able to save the marriage, but she is surely going to get her two-cents in.  At times it’s funny; at time it’s painful and frustrating; sometimes sad… just like real life.
(I can’t wait to read it! it’s already on my TRBList) 🙂 (Review coming soon…)

FBOM

FBOM, on the other hand, is not the sweet, kind lighthearted story that will leave your heart soaring with hope and new life.  FBOM is a story that revolves around the darkness of man and the insanity of suffering.  The society of Rape that we live in, have always lived in and accepted is a result of shame, lack of empathy and a total domination of the hearts and souls of an entire gender.

Imagine the outrage if a man were to be raped in Central Park, or a serial rapist broke into homes and raped the husbands instead of the wives.  Imagine the manhunts, the disgust, the court cases.  Yet these things happen every day in cities and towns around the world.  Entire populations are subjugated and their women used as sex slaves and we accept it as part of society and war.

Until conversations begin, empathy learned and entire generations are retrained to understand and think with their hearts and their minds, the thousands of years of brutal exploitation will continue.
(A truly difficult subject to broach, but Im looking forward to reading it as well)

What Inspired you to write your book?  Life has inspired me to write.  Throughout my life I have been working with people.  Learning about them, helping them in one way or another, and generally experiencing both their joys and pains.  It is time to share what I’ve learned over the years and doing it in a story format has always been the most effective manner of communication.  After all, there is a reason all of the old tales were told around campfires and sung by traveling minstrels.  If you can create the image in their minds, and reach their souls, the pictures your words create will last a lifetime.

How would you describe your “Voice” or Style of writing?  As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been called a naked writer.  How people know what I’m wearing when I write is beyond me, but there it is.   I do prefer to wear socks and Jesus Sandals though.   Actually… I write with a style that is designed to bring the reader into the heart and soul of the characters.  I want them to be part of the story not just a casual observer.  If you read one of my sex scenes and aren’t in desperate need of a …. Drink… or you finish one of my novels without feeling like you have eaten a full meal and need a nap, I kind of feel as if I’ve let you down.
(And this is why I just had to share you/your writing with everyone!)

In SMAFU, I want the reader to feel the frustration, heartache and feeling of abandonment of both the husband and the wife.  I want them to hope for unity and salvation, cry for failures and doubts and understand the why and how the ending was the way it is.  It’s life, sometimes things work out, and sometimes they don’t.  You’ll just have to read the book to find out what happens.

In FBOM I just want the reader to feel.  To feel every element of emotion on the scale.  From anger and disgust to joy and arousal.  I want the reader to feel the pain and fear, the gruesome feeling of power and conquest, and most of all the belief that things can improve and get better.  Society can change and improve but it has to start with an honest discussion that removes the shame self-recrimination.

What genre do you prefer to write or are you truly eclectic?   Eclectic is a marvelous word.  SMAFU is technically a Romantic Comedy, FBOM is a probably best categorized as a crime thriller.  I’m in the process of writing a metaphysical sci-fi thriller and have an epic romance novel in the works.  Soooo…. Hmmm…. Preference?  Nope.
(nor do I, but this is all about you, so..)

Do you painstakingly plot out your story; are you a discovery writer or a bit of both? Why?   I know the beginning and end of almost everything I write.  It’s the stuff in the middle that comes to me in the shower and in my dreams.  In my car as I sit in traffic and in the middle of the day when my mind wanders.  I’ve even been known to work on two books simultaneously as one plot point hits me back and forth.

Do you have a favourite or least favourite character? And Why?   That’s like asking me if I have a favorite child.  I refuse to answer that in case I offend one of them.  (Psst… It’s Cherisse, don’t tell the others.)
(Your secret is safe with us; isn’t it everyone?)

Share an insight or secret about your book(s).  You should really read them.  The secrets of the universe are enclosed within.

And now the hard part…lets talk about YOU (No you can’t bow out now, sit down): If you had to describe yourself to someone who has never met you, what might you say?   Beware, he borders on insanity but he’s truly harmless.

If you could meet one person from the past, who might it be and why?  I think I would like to meet Jesus Christ.  Not because I’m a super, devout Christian, but because I would really like to know if he thinks it was worth it.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime?  I am an avid Baseball fan.

Do you have a Mantra?  Do no harm unless it leads to a greater good.  Sometimes pain is necessary for growth.  Stasis is the enemy.

Thank You Ever So much Michael for taking time away from your writing, the odd daydream(not odd in the odd sense, mind you, unless they are, of course!), and your plans for world domination to share your story and your stories with all of us. I, for one, am delighted you stopped by and hope everyone else is also.

      1. Absolutely! We are looking into a tie in with International Peace Day Sept 21
The editor likes it. Have to wait to hear from her senior editor. But we will shout from the mountaintops. That’s partly why we are working to contact everyone. We may make it an annual event.
