“What Haunts Me (Ghost Killer Book 1) was a mesmerizing introduction to George’s world. I’d strongly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys the dark of paranormal fiction.”

“The Edge of the Cemetery (Ghost Killer Book 2) is the sequel to the supernatural thriller, What Haunts Me, following George Sinclair and his friends, all of whom have the remarkable talent of being able to see and vanquish ghosts and demons. In this book, George faces some tough demons, and has to act quickly in order to stop Gilles, one of the most powerful, murderous ghosts of all time from unleashing all kinds of supernatural danger.”

What Hunts Me (Ghost Killer Book 3) “What a great series! I wish it would keep going and going! But I guess I say that about all the great ones! In this book, Margaret does it again! “Mysterious supernatural forces are in play and the ghost killers find themselves propelled into a fight for their lives.” I just can’t take enough about this series! You need to try it for yourself!”

All three books can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C8R8CXY/

Margaret Millmore lives on a quaint island in the Puget Sound, Washington with her husband and two cantankerous alarm clocks (better known as cats, who are apparently starving to death at 5 a.m. every single darn morning…).

Her first published works were flash fiction, which were featured on Bay Area artist, Kenny Mencher’s blog, The Welcome Home and Untitled – Luke N. Goode.

In 2011 she published her first full length novel, since then she’s published a three book series, another novel and her current series (via Creativia Publishing) What Haunts Me (Ghost Killer Book 1) and The Edge of the Cemetery (Ghost Killer Book 2), which was awarded the August 2016 Book of the Month award by Long and Short Reviews, and What Hunts Me (Ghost Killer Book 3), which incorporates an epic journey taken by her grandfather in 1915. The majority of her books are set in San Francisco where she lived—previous to island life—for over 26 years.

Margaret’s preferred writing genre is supernatural fiction, with the exception of her time-travel novel, The Dragonfly Door.

The first book in a series of high-action, conspiracy sci-fi thrillers following Agent Cleo Darkrose, a lethal female agent working for a secret organisation who puppeteers the world from the shadows.

MDS train their elite agents at an unclassified installation in the desert. Agent Cleo Darkrose is lethal.

Orders are to neutralise some conspiracy theorist planning a devastating terrorist attack on The Outside. But there’s a catch; this ‘patriot‘ used to be one of theirs and her superior wants his family for safe-keeping.

Between hunting her target and working with a hastily dumped ex-lover, Cleo is running out of time, trying to keep her flawless success record while her shadowy world fragments.

5 Star Amazon Review by YR Lewis

Action immediately graces the first page, drawing you into a story of deceit and misuse of power.
Dangers unravel, and secrets are revealed cautiously leaving you guessing to the end.
The main character has a real strong sense of justice as well as having a balance between femininity and robustness. The writer presents Cleo as a charismatic woman who drives the events from scene to scene with candour and a strength you admire.
The novel is fast-paced, and the character’s fresh point of view allows it to be funny at times. I could not put the book down and I am looking forward to the next part in the series because the story has left me wanting more.
This book is a must read and only the beginning of an amazing adventure I intend to take with the author Ever Eden. I recommend this novel to everyone of all ages. When is the next book out? I can’t wait.

.

Formerly a contributor and journalist for digital and print media, Ever Eden reported from activist circles in the period after 9/11. Her hands on experience with the changing of culture and the emergence of a different world inspired and cultivated her already-ingrained passion for writing fiction containing action and core human values as well as sci-fi elements.

Ever Eden grew up in Australia, in an old house the neighbours said was haunted. She wrote her first trilogy at age 13, involving a group of teens responsible for a murder in outback Australia. She then developed her passion for story-telling with short stories, novellas, songs and poetry before she stumbled into the world of Agent Darkrose.

Today’s Author Spotlight is on Assaph Mehr, author of Murder In Absentia.

Book Blurb
A young man is found dead in his bed, with a look of extreme agony on his face and strange tattoos all over his body. His distraught senator father suspects foul play, and knows who to call on.

Enter Felix the Fox, a professional investigator. In the business of ferreting out dark information for his clients, Felix is neither a traditional detective nor a traditional magician – but something in between. Drawing on his experience of dealing with the shady elements of society and his aborted education in the magical arts, Felix dons his toga and sets out to discover the young man’s killers.
Murder in absentia is set in a fantasy world. The city of Egretia borrows elements from a thousand years of ancient Roman culture, from the founding of Rome to the late empire, mixed with a judicious amount of magic. This is a story of a cynical, hardboiled detective dealing with anything from daily life to the old forces roaming the world.
This is a story of Togas, Daggers and Magic – for lovers of Murder Mysteries, Ancient Rome and Urban Fantasy.

Assaph has receive many awards for his writing, including:
Virtual FantasyCon 2016

  • 1st place – Favourite Dark Fantasy Book
  • 1st place – Favourite Dark Fantasy Author
  • 2nd place – Favourite Urban Fantasy Book
  • 2nd place – Favourite Urban Fantasy Author
  • 3rd place – Favourite Fantasy Series

AND Goodreads

1st place – Indie Books Worth The Read (https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/37072.Self_Pub_or_Indie_Books_Worth_the_Read)

Hi Assaph 🙂 Please Introduce us to your Blog. What is it all about? What sorts of posts do you lean towards? My blog is part of my author platform, and therefore reflects those aspects. I put out original contents (like short stories), articles about writing and marketing, occasional news, and general funny stuff.

I love the subject matter I’m writing about – the blend of ancient Rome and Fantasy – so I include information about them. I also seem to have a reasonable knack for book marketing, so I try to put out articles that could help other authors in today’s shifting publishing landscape.

What Inspires and stirs your creativity? I’ve always loved to read. I had my nose in a book since I was five. Whilst I always dreamt of writing one day, I never thought I’d get to it before retirement. But once started, I enjoy it so much I have no intention of stopping. It’s the outlet I’ve always looked for in creative endeavours. (My only other outlet is in cooking, of which I have half a talent at best).

Conversely, what do you find difficult to write about?

According to my editor, I’m a typical guy in that it’s hard to get me to put the deep emotional stuff on the page…. It is there though. Felix is a hardboiled, crusty detective. He doesn’t necessarily show it, but the novels have a larger emotional arc to them. My strengths seem to be in the world building and the intricate plots, and my editor is whipping helping me in making my writing even better.

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/posts? Besides that Felix tells awesome stories? 😊 I don’t have a message I set out to share, but I think I would like to show to others that writing is a matter of perseverance, and good writing is a matter of reading. If it’s something you love, if you can stick to it, you can make it work and get much satisfaction from it.

How has your blog helped you as a writer/Indie Author? What things have you learned along the way that you never anticipated? My blog is part of my platform, as I mentioned. It helps tremendously in building presence and getting noticed.

As for lessons learnt, I’m a self-learner. I’ll research what I need, examine the options, and then build up my skills by doing. It’s an introverted process, rather than relying on others for support. That said, I will say that the indie community is fantastic and extremely supportive. I have made many new dear friends since becoming an author.

Tell us about your book(s): My books tell the stories of Felix, a classic noir detective in tone but dealing with paranormal cases – all set in a world based on Ancient Rome. I call them Storied of Togas, Daggers, and Magic. They combine the elements of what I like to read.

What Inspired you to write your book? I’ve had the idea for the mystery behind Murder In Absentia and come of the characters involved kicking around in the back of my head for a decade. But as I said, I wasn’t looking to write anything before retirement.
Then one hot January night over two years ago, my complained that she finished everything she wanted to read. So after everyone went to bed, I sat down, and started to write. And I didn’t stop until I completed the manuscript, about four months later.

From what Point of View do you prefer to write? Is there a reason? I write in first-person POV. I like to read such novels, where you get into the head of the protagonist. It’s very common in noir detectives, and it felt the most natural to write in. Felix is, in a way, a bigger and better version of me.

How would you describe your “Voice” or Style of writing? Uniquely my own, I hope. Felix does have a bit of deadpan humour, and isn’t always the most reliable narrator. But if you like a bit of fry humour, you’ll love his quips.

I put out short stories with Felix, so that potential readers can find out quickly if they like my style. You can find them here: https://egretia.com/short-stories/.

What genre do you prefer to write or are you truly eclectic? The best genre label is “historical fantasy”, though if you’d like something more specific I guess “Historically-themed Urban High-fantasy Noir Detective Mysteries (with just a splash of Horror)” would do.

I like speculative fiction. Always have. I grew of classic Sci-fi and fantasy, read a lot of detectives and thriller, and have always been in love with history and historical fiction, particularly Rome. So blending all of these was just natural. That doesn’t mean I won’t try another setting – but I think I’ll always remain under the “historical fantasy” umbrella.

Do you painstakingly plot out your story; are you a discovery writer or a bit of both? Why? A bit of both. As the stories are mysteries, I know the ending. I know the quintessential essence, what the story is all about. I also know where I start (Felix being hired to resolve said mystery). In between, I like to discover the plot for myself. I like putting Felix in impossible situations, and marvel at his ability to weasel out of them and come to a satisfying conclusion. I just try to keep him in the right direction, as he’s telling me his memoirs.

Do you have a favourite or least favourite character? And Why? I don’t think I have a “least favourite” character. I enjoy writing them all. Even the antagonists. I make sure that they are human too, with wants and needs, and one can’t really hate them.

Besides my protagonist through whose eyes the stories are told, I do enjoy writing the other main characters in his life. Araxus with his shifting grasp of reality, Aemilia who like to poke her nose at his business, and others. They are all like friends.

Share an insight or secret about your book(s). I mentioned that there is an emotional arc across several books, even though each is an independent mystery. I have this planned across four novels at the moment. The point where the current work-in-progress (book two) ends – well, I am expecting a few death threats from the dedicated Felix fans.

What do you feel is your best advice to share with other aspiring authors? The most important thing in writing is a comfy pair of pants. Put them on, then park your ass in a chair and write. There is nothing as basic as sitting down and writing, and without it you won’t get far. So write a little bit, but often. And keep at it until you’re done.

As for writing good books, ah – there the secret is different. To write good books, you must get yourself a comfy pair of pants, park your ass on the couch, and start reading. Read a lot, in your genre and outside of it. Keep reading and observing what you’re reading. And then move to the chair and write some.

Would you like to share an excerpt from the book or a poem or two to give readers an idea what you offer? This is from the last third of the current WIP. Felix has a broken leg, and finds himself at a low-point in the case, in a foul mood and not many options. He goes back to basics, for some cash and fresh air.

I decided I needed some time away from everyone, and that I would not be getting it at home.

My mobility impaired, I could not take on another case. I was in no condition to walk far, but I limped down to the docks between the grain and fish markets, found a good corner, chalked ‘FORTUNES TOLD CURSES IDENTIFIED’ on the wall, sat down on a folding stool, put on airs, and busied myself with a scroll of Assyrican star-gazing that looked impressive with all its strange and foreign symbols.

People being what they are, especially sailors and dock workers, I scraped enough small coins that day to cover a night of drinking. Calculating people’s horoscopes is tedious, but at least cleaner than haruspicy. One sailor wanted me to write a curse against his fellow, whom he swore stole his lucky fascinum when they were asleep. I scribbled a supplication to Hygieia — about as magical as a bucket of piss — to withdraw her protection from the thief’s health. I also sold him a mild laxative in the guise of ‘special medicine’, and told him to slip it in the evening meal whilst at sea to make the guilty party revealed to all. On the off-chance he was wrong about the culprit, the laxative was to go into the main pot, with the supplication into the fire. I taught him a meaningless doggerel to repeat, so I could claim it was his fault for botching it. Thoughts of future winds generated below decks by an overly flatulent crew cheered me up.

It also kept my mind away from Aemilia, and what I needed to do with her.

And now for the part most Authors find difficult…Lets talk about you! If you had to describe yourself to someone who has never met you, what might you say? I… wouldn’t know where to start. There’s the obvious picture and bio. Everything else comes when you get to know them better, built over time.

If you could meet one person from the past, who might it be and why? Just one? But there are so many…. I’d probably pick Sulla and Catilina, two intriguing characters from ancient Rome who – I think – got the short end of the stick when history was written.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime? I spend a lot of time with my family, playing with the kids. I read a lot, mostly at nights or when I’m too tired to write. Occasionally I manage to keep up my martial arts practice. I’ve been practicing various martial arts on and off for the past 30 years, and am currently practicing an internal branch of Wing Chun. I actually based some of the magic system in my world on my experience studying the internal arts.

Describe Your Dream Getaway Destination. Have you ever been there? What makes this place Irresistible to you? I love ancient ruins. I’ve recently been on a trip to visit family in Israel (pics on my blog and Instagram), so naturally I took my family to visit a few of my favourite old forts and historical sites. I have been to Rome and Italy many years ago, and would love to go again. So many places I have only seen in pictures, and would love to experience.

I have this tendency, when walking old streets, to see them as they were and not as they are. Just have to remember to watch out for traffic.

What “Charity” or “Cause” do you feel passionately about & Why? Not a specific charity, but I do feel passionate about environmental issues. I see what we are doing to the planet and what we are leaving to our children, and it scares me.

Assaph has had his nose in a book since he was five, and had to yell at the librarian that he can read already so he should get his own card. With a rather diverse taste in reading – from fantasy to philosophy, from ancient times to the far future – his first novel Murder In Absentia is an “historically-themed urban high-fantasy hardboiled murder mystery, with just a dash of horror”.

After years of reading and only dreaming of seeing his name in print, he suddenly started writing in 2015. He owes this to his wife, who complained that there was nothing good left to read. Once the challenge was accepted and Murder In Absentia was born, Assaph just kept on writing – short stories, flash fiction, and now a second full length novel. You can find them all on egretia.com.

When he’s not busy mashing up genres or interviewing other author’s characters on TheProtagonistSpeaks.com, this ex-Israeli-turned-Aussie enjoys his kids, cats, wife and even his day job. He hopes that his thirty years of martial arts make his fight scenes realistic, and that his love of history shines through his work.

Today I have the honour of sharing with you fellow blogger Debbie Pierce from Musings by an ND Domer’s Mom blog and author of her first book Unplayable Lie.

Hi Debbie!! Thanks for Sharing your story with BnV today. Please tell us all about yourself!

About my blog

My blog, Musings by an ND Domer’s Mom, started for two reasons: to capture my son’s college experience and to follow recommendations I’d received at a writer’s conference to build a platform for my writing.

To say it’s evolved would be an understatement!

I post once a week (more often when I can). Once a month, I share information gleaned from research into healing gemstones. That’s an extension of one of my hobbies, jewelry making. A few years ago, I challenged myself to step out of my comfort zone and try writing poetry. The result is an eclectic mix of haiku, limericks, free verse, ballads, and more catalogued on my Poet’s Page. The bulk of my posts are “slices of life” revolving around seasonal nature photos, travels, parenting, or humorous incidents (some narrated by my Sheltie). And lately, I’ve been including updates from my writer’s journey.

I strive for a conversational tone, like I’m writing a newsy letter to a dear friend. The thing that surprised me most about blogging was how supportive and encouraging this community is. I was a shy child and still tend toward introversion; it required a BIG leap of faith to put my poetry online for others to read. Imagine my delight when they said they enjoyed it!

I’ve written since I could hold a pencil. When I was a kid, I’d check out immense stacks of library books, then tuck myself away visiting new worlds until I was called to chores. I remember starting (but never finishing) novels over most summers. To me, inspiration is all around! Whether it’s a news story in the paper or an overheard conversation or a snippet of research into something interesting, I find ideas plentiful.

On my blog, I avoid contentious discussions about politics, and I keep things family-friendly. I’ve found it next to impossible to write sex scenes in my novels, too. There’s enough of that sort of thing out there without me. Being true to oneself, I’ve found, is the best policy.

My book

My book, Unplayable Lie, is a fiction/thriller about a journalist who faces danger when he allows himself to become emotionally drawn into a story he’s following.

Here’s the premise:

Texas journalist Josh Griffin lives for scoops, but he’s never faced real danger to get one. Nor has he ever been emotionally drawn into his stories. Then he gets an anonymous tip that teenaged golf superstar Lexi Carlisle has been kidnapped, and Josh embarks on an investigation destined to change his life forever.

Lexi Carlisle is the daughter of Josh’s college sweetheart; watching Amanda agonize over her missing daughter while refuting police insinuations that she had something to do with the crime is more than Josh can handle. And when he unravels the web of lies spun by Lexi’s crazed kidnapper — who has killed once and isn’t afraid to do so again — Josh realizes the story takes second place to the girl’s rescue.

The book is being published by Waldorf Publishing and is scheduled for release on Oct. 15, 2017. For now, it’s available for pre-order online at Amazon and Target. (Shameless marketing plug!!)

https://www.amazon.com/Unplayable-Lie-Josh-Griffin-Mystery/dp/1684192633/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1502750215&sr=1-7&keywords=unplayable+lie

https://www.target.com/p/unplayable-life-paperback-caleigh-o-shea/-/A-52028159#lnk=sametab

The spark for my story came one day as I was golfing with my son. One of the holes lay parallel to a tangled overgrown area, and the idea of a kidnapping took root, refusing to let go.

I gravitate toward third person Point of View. Like Mary Higgins Clark or Mary Jane Clark, I prefer to pick out a set number of characters to tell the story, and I rotate POV among them based on what they’re seeing and experiencing. I tend to write short chapters that end on a cliffhanger, and I love throwing in a variety of twists and turns.

I’ve tried to outline, but I don’t like to because I’m not good at it. I think that’s because as a kid, we had to outline everything. So even though I don’t do a formal outline, I’d be lost without making notes about plot points, scenes, characters, and so forth. I’ve never done NANOWRIMO (the write-a-book-in-30-days challenge) because I’m not a writer who tosses together a rough draft, then edits to tidy things up. Nope, I tend to edit as I go along, making for a slow go initially (but when I get to the end, it pretty much is!)

A secret about my book – I changed the hero’s name three times before I was happy with it! The first name I selected was actually the name of a living athlete, and I knew that wasn’t going to work. It took a while for me to get comfortable with the final choice, but I think this one fits him.

Have I written characters I don’t particularly like? Sure, but I hope I’ve concealed that and treated them kindly!

Best advice for other writers? Butt in chair, hands on keys, and start putting your ideas down. Writing a novel is lots harder than some would have you believe, especially for those of us trained in journalism. Sure, you’re telling a story, but the author is a puppet-master while the journalist is quoting facts, documents, and other sources. While I was writing Unplayable Lie, I often felt like I was living in two worlds, my reality and the novel’s fiction. It got to where someone in real life would ask me a question and I’d mentally weigh my response based on which character I was thinking about at the time!

About me

I write under a pen name, something my mom is still having a hard time with!

For years I was a working journalist, so I got used to seeing my real name in print. And it worked for factual stories. However, this novel is fiction, so it just made sense to write under a “fictitious” name. I gave my pseudonym a great deal of thought and I’m pleased with the decision. It honors my Irish heritage and solves the quandary of being christened with a common name.

I guess I’ve always been a creative person. My hobbies and interests have evolved, just like my writing. As a child, I played piano, picked up clarinet and a bit of sax in school, and now am learning the flute. I love most sports, though golf and tennis hold a special place in my heart. I’ve done needlepoint, embroidery, and crochet. I taught myself to bead one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, including Rosaries. I zone out with mindless coloring of mandalas and such while talking on the phone, I’m an avid reader, and I write.

Because I’m the sole caregiver for my aging mom, I constantly struggle with time (or, rather, a lack of it!). I’ve found that having interests all over the board keeps me sane and helps me cope with the stress. While hobbies add to my enjoyment of life, sometimes pursuing them makes it hard to find the time I need to write. Having a deadline (one that’s self-imposed or from my publisher) helps immensely.

My day job is designing Web pages. It fulfils a need to express my creativity through color and design, as well as to work for myself. I also make time to take long walks or enjoy a bit of retail therapy. I don’t need crowds of people around me; rather, I gravitate to solitary activities. Because I can always find something to do, I’m rarely bored.

While I’ve been from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico, I don’t really consider myself well-traveled. My favorite place for a getaway is close to water. I find the rhythm of waves very soothing, and there’s something about a salty climate that makes me sleep better. My ideal destination is Ireland, a place I briefly visited a few years back.

People who don’t know me don’t know how independent I am. I need plenty of time alone to regroup, daydream, and create. I don’t like lots of drama (except on the page or stage), and I avoid people who can’t accept boundaries. I have lots of acquaintances but few in my inner circle. There’s a BIG difference between being lonely and being alone. The former can happen in a crowd; the latter is a necessity for creatives (writing isn’t a spectator sport!)

Today’s character Interview is by Fantasy author Tabitha Darling. Tabitha is the author of multiple works of fiction and nonfiction. (To be released ongoing) She is wife to a robot builder and mom to a toddler. By day, she is a barefoot farrier, horse trainer, and riding instructor. She lives in Texas, with her husband, toddler, three horses, three hens, three geese, and three doves.

In the book Trust (Children of Chiron Series Vol 1) Ieang (Eeng) is a main character caught up in a war between humans and his people the centaur. He struggles to save an infant centaur and in the process needs a human, Brenda to help with the baby. They begin to understand and respect each other over time.

History teaches that centaurs are aggressive, how do you feel about this? It bothers me. We are taught to respect the power the Gods give only to women. I have seen humans be good and mean.

What do you look like? I am a centaur. My body is horse, man and unicorn. My hair is brown, my skin is brown, my eyes are brown.

What do you like to wear? We do not need clothes like humans.

How do you keep your hooves worn down? We walk. If we can not, we use a hard stone to do it.

What is the horn on your head? It is what separates the people from the Gods and the animals. It reminds us of our origin, the unicorn.

What is telepathy like? I learned from my human wife that humans think in sounds. We do not, but we can. What you feel, see, touch, feelings, all is given, in telepathy. Not just sounds, all. It joins the people, into one. It is the gift from unicorn.

What do centaurs eat? We eat as you do, plant, meat. Why?

What do you think of humans? Your people are gifted by the Gods with great power and knowledge.

If someone wanted to learn the language and culture, your beliefs, would that be ok? Yes, I will help teach.

How do you feel about videos and photographs? I will not talk about this.

What do you think of horses? They are more intelligent than humans know. They should be respected.

If a human child wanted a ride, would that bug you? No, I would be happy to play with them.

How do you like to socialize? I enjoy watching my children, to sing with them after a meal. Or spending time with the men on a hunt.

What was your role in your family growing up? My role was to obey the elders, and my father, to respect the Gods and spirits. To listen and learn.

What were you most proud of as a kid? I was glad to become a man. It meant the Gods and spirits thought I was worthy. I try to be.

What did you find terribly embarrassing as a kid? I was humiliated for my dishonor once when I did not give an offering on a hunt. I learned to after the punishment. I had angered the spirits, I was wrong.

What was your first best friend like? We do not have one friend. All the men hunt and work together. That is our way.

What ‘group’ were you in during your high school years? We do not learn in one house, we learn with our fathers who raise us. The shaman may teach us, but usually it is our father. If one father and one child is a group, then that was my group.

What did you want to be when you grew up–and what did you end up becoming? I only hoped to be accepted by the God of life to the temple, to do well by our ancestors, the ones who came before. To not disgrace any of them. I passed my run, I am a man, adult. That is all I am.

What are your hobbies? I enjoy speaking with the God of tools, to ask the spirits to give their power to what I make so that a hunt goes well. If I honor them, the power is there, and the animals are happy to give us meat.

What music do you listen to? Brady, brother to my human wife says that humans enjoy music all the time, that the human Gods allow it. We do not, it speaks to the ancestors, the spirits and Gods. It is sacred.

What annoys you? I am angered if the people begin to disrespect the elders, the shaman, the spirits, ancestors or the Gods.

What makes you laugh? To watch my children.

Are you a dog or a cat person? I do not like to eat dog but I have, it seems to be a friendly spirit to humans. I do not know what cat is.

What season do you enjoy most? I look forward to the dry season when the hunting is good.

What makes you embarrassed as an adult? I have answered this before.

Do you drink alcohol? What is this drink? We have many drinks and some are sacred. We usually drink water.

What do you feel most passionately about? I hope that my people will live, have many children, if the Gods allow. And to continue living in the marriage house with my wife.

What trait do you find most admirable in others? To be an elder, a shaman, to speak with the Gods, ancestors and spirits. It is the best any can become until we join them in their home when we die.

Do you want a job that helps people or a job that makes money? Money, is how humans hunt, to bring food yes? If we live on Earth, I would like to learn in human school to get a job, yes. I always like to help! The people rely on each other to bring meat, to build a house. We do not live alone like humans.

Are you a leader or a follower? I am only a man, a hunter. I was not called to be a leader.

What scares you? To see the last of my people, no more children. That we so angered the Gods.

What are your long term goals? I have answered this before! To see my people live.

What are your short term goals? To hunt well.

What are your bad habits? Bad habits make the spirits angry.

What do you think happens after we die? If we please the Gods we live in their home by their fire and eat with them when the hunt is good.

If you were to come into money what would you do with it? Money is how humans get food, they do not hunt? If we have more than we need, I would give it to others who need more so that they have food.

Who was the love of your life? I love my human wife Brenda, she taught me love.

Today I am delighted to introduce you to fellow author Jan Gordon, who writes under the name Melanie Mole. Melanie grew up in a tiny village in the wonderful countryside in England. Long walks with her dogs in beautiful scenery and winding country lanes gave her time to think and dream. Most of the time dreaming of a future where her life would be as calm as both the countryside in which she walked, or how she felt when she read her treasured books. Dreaming was something which came easily to Melanie. Very often her school report would mention that she spent more time day dreaming than doing her school work, except in English lessons which she loved.

Her love of words was always there, but sometimes stifled by the opinions of others. But as she grew older Melanie would not let these hold her back her any longer. Over the years Melanie grew in confidence and it was then that she finally felt able to follow her writing dreams. Being part of quite a large family, but always feeling different to everyone else, Melanie found solace in both writing and books. This, coupled with her new found confidence in herself, mainly because of the freedom of middle age, was where her writing really found momentum.

Taking 25 years to complete her first book, around family life and a pressured work environment in palliative care, Melanie began to realise that simplifying her life was the way to go. Living more simply and finding ways in which to enjoy having less became her chosen path. This was where her book Simply Does It was born. Her experiences to find a more simple life in which to have to time write and do more of the things that she loves, are shared in this unusual non-fiction book. Her other book, Man + Woman + Trouble, is a comical look at the mistakes Melanie made during her relationships. It is full of tips on what not to do if you want a great relationship. It is aimed at both men and women.

Please Introduce us to your Blog. What is it all about? What sorts of posts do you lean towards?

Hello Cynthia, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to answer your questions.

My blog is about anything to do with books, writing, author interviews, the amazing opportunities that simple living has afforded me, and anything else that peaks my interest.

A lot of my posts are about writing as that is my true love. I try to look at how other writers have written, and how their lifestyle affected that.

I am always looking at ways of showing support to other writers. So many of us flounder at first, so it is nice for us all to support each other. Writer love is what it is all about!

I also did an article about a man who calls himself Captain Beany. He is totally obsessed with baked beans, and even has a museum in his home dedicated to them. I was impressed with the work that he does for charity, and so wanted to feature him on my blog. It got a good reaction which I was pleased about.

You can find my blog here.

What Inspires and stirs your creativity?

The first would be my grandchildren. I have four now and the eldest is 11 this month. I look at the photos of them that I keep near my computer, and I just about burst with happiness. I want to do my best writing for them. It would be nice one day if they read my books and thought that they were a good read. That would be great!

Secondly it would be the simple things in life. I have never been a materialistic sort of person, so the little things have always inspired me. That can be as simple as raindrops on a leaf, an animal, spending time with someone special etc. I feel lucky to be inspired by little things as I tend to notice them more. So I am blessed.

Conversely, what do you find difficult to write about?

I definitely find writing fiction more difficult. I generally write non-fiction, but I got brave this year and wrote my first short story called ‘Blossom Shines at Buttercup Bay‘. It is contained in a Creativia Anthology titled ‘Once Upon a Broken Dream’. I was really pleased that my first attempt at writing fiction was published in this book. My aim is to write a whole series of Buttercup Bay Books. I have the outlines already written, so just need to start writing them now!

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/posts?

I want to share so many things through my posts. But the main one is that we are not alone when we find it difficult to write. There are so many writing groups, forums, websites etc. that there is always a place to go where we can learn, get support, or both. The writing community is massive. All we have to do is to find the right fit for us, and then we can interact as much or as little as we want to. The world really is our writing oyster!

How has your blog helped you as a writer/Indie Author? What things have you learned along the way that you never anticipated?

I only started my blog quite recently, so I am learning all the time from it. At first I would plan what posts I would write, but now I do them as the inspiration hits me. The only posts which I do tend to plan are author interviews because readers seem to like those a lot. I like them too because I learn so much from them. Also I write posts about my next book, or when one is due to be released.

One of the things that I never expected to learn from my blog is that not all authors find inspiration in their surroundings. I wrongly assumed that where they write always inspires them. But, I have now found through interacting on my blog, that this is not always true.

I am lucky that I have leaned many writing tips along the way too. I am blessed when other writers share their tips or tell us about their writing day because we can all learn from that.

Tell us about your book(s):

My first book, ‘Simply Does It‘, has just been published. My life has been changed for the better in so many ways by living more simply. This book chronicles the start of my journey towards raising my writing capacity by over 800% in just a year! I wanted to keep the quality of my writing, so I edited again and again. I can honestly say that I have found the magic formula for being able to write much more, even though I was also a full time, live in carer for a relative at the same time. The demands of this mean that I never knew, day or night, when I would be called to help them. Plus I had surgery of my own during this time too. So, if you want to know how I started that journey then ‘Simply Does It‘ could really be the book for you.

My second book, ‘Man + Woman = Trouble‘, came about because I had so many stories to tell about the mountain of relationship mistakes I had made. I also wanted to give tips on how not to behave if you want a great relationship. So this book encompasses these, and more. I tried to keep it lighthearted so that it would be both interesting, and also make readers laugh. It is aimed at both men and women no matter what type of relationship they are in. So I hope that my readers will enjoy it.

What Inspired you to write your book?

I was inspired to write ‘Man + Woman = Trouble’ because of my own experiences. I thought that if I have those sorts of problems, then other must do to. I wanted to look at them in a comical way, whilst also trying to show how not to make the same mistakes that I did.

My inspiration for writing ‘Simply Does It’ was the amazing experiences that I have had by living a more simple life. I can’t stress enough how different my life is now that I live more simply. It has soothed my soul like nothing else, and reduced my stress levels beyond compare with the life that I once led. It has truly been a breathtaking experience.

From what Point of View do you prefer to write? Is there a reason?

Until now I have always written non-fiction books. I have tended to write from my own perspective so far as the subjects that I have written about are either ones which I have experienced first hand, or are very close to my heart. But, even though they are from my own point of view, I try to offer a balanced argument too.

How would you describe your “Voice” or Style of writing?

My style of writing is really just hearing what thoughts come into my head, and then documenting them. I wish that I could say that it was more technically done, or in the style of some great writer, but it isn’t. My writing is generally like someone is having a gentle conversation with the reader. I am writing my thoughts, and they are reading them. I don’t know how else to do it. I think that we all have our own writing styles, and that we shouldn’t fight them. Going with the flow is much better than having a daily battle with your writer self. Life is much calmer that way, and I like that.

What genre do you prefer to write or are you truly eclectic?

Until now I have always written non-fiction. I know that my books will often be about writing, as I think about it so often. But they will also be about the benefits of simple living. The world seems to be running at such a frantic pace now that something has to give. Either we find a better way to live which is less stressful, or we could quite literally spontaneously combust. The choice is our own to make. I just hope that more of us make it sooner than later.

Do you painstakingly plot out your story; are you a discovery writer or a bit of both? Why?

My only piece of fiction is my short story ‘Blossom Sines at Buttercup Bay‘. So I’m not really sure yet. I did have some sort of outline before I started to write it. But it tended to be very fluid during the writing process. So I would probably say that I do both.

Do you have a favourite or least favourite character? And Why?

It would have to be Monty because he is so kind and sincere. But that may change to someone else over time. I guess that I won’t really know until I have written the rest of the books. It is something that I am looking forward to.

Share an insight or secret about your book(s).

Well, I have written most of my books without getting a good night’s sleep. Because of a shoulder injury I have, I still need to have further shoulder surgery. The pain from it means that either I take regular pain killers that don’t work, or I take strong ones which knock me out during the day a lot too. I haven’t been able to sleep in a bed for 18 months now. So I sleep sitting up in a chair every night. To be honest it is exhausting. Most of us can cope with a few night of poor sleep, but at the moment that is my reality every night. I hope that the further surgery that is scheduled for me will work, and I will be sleeping soundly again soon.

What do you feel is your best advice to share with other aspiring authors?

Never, ever, give up! Use whatever keeps you going to do just that. Also, read about J.K Rowling’s story for inspiration. I don’t just mean about how many publishers turned her down. I mean about what she went through in her personal life before she even got to that point. Keep fighting for what you want, always.

Would you like to share an excerpt from the book or a poem or two to give readers an idea what you offer?

Yes, that would be good. The first excerpt is from my book ‘Man + Woman = Trouble‘ –

That Old Chestnut Nagger

The characteristics of a That Old Chestnut Nagger are persistence and having a really good memory, and boy do women have good memories. Especially where we think the subject in hand really matters. Make sure that you remember this because it is a distinct advantage if you do. Of course no logical thought process would have ever gone into this decision. We tend to store up our points to remind us how bad you have been in a sort of brain sack. It’s hidden away in a very dark and dingy place. The sort of place you wouldn’t want to go to after dark. Where monsters loom, and even they have to fight for survival. A place where you should expect the unexpected to happen, and where you should be very afraid, because it is very unpredictable depending on mood and hormone levels.

Men just need to remember that we can store all this information we often refer to as important stuff for a very long time. This is the sort of stuff which we are sure to bring up the next time you either look at us in a funny way, or perhaps when you do something like breathe. Yes I did say breathe. You can sometimes only do one of these before we blow again. We are like a volcano just waiting to erupt. Not all of us of course. But there are enough women like this for anyone to be weary.

Another thing to remember is that we never lose sight of our original point for discussion. It is always there lurking in the background. Don’t forget that it is also a woman’s prerogative to add more points at any time. In fact the list can just grow and grow. Like one of those seemingly tiny pieces of paper that is folded neatly, but which can unravel and grow to an incredible length at any time. So, gentlemen, it may be advisable that you have your own list to argue points from. That’s something that the lady in your life won’t be expecting. Shock tactics are usually a good way of causing a detour around the subject in hand. Especially if you want to buy some extra time or if you are dying to get to the pub/bar or to do something else that’s equally as important. But of course you need to be aware that any dodged points will only come back to bite you later, so sometimes it’s best to just suffer at the time and get it over with. It really depends on when you want more hassle. Is it best to have trouble now, or later? Only you can make that decision. Because one thing you can be sure of is that it will surely come at some point in time.

What you need to do is literally wait until the nagger is taking a breath and dive in with the first point you want to make. Then just keep going strongly, or keep very quiet. How she reacts will guide you towards which of these you need to do. Remember that just because one tactic worked last time doesn’t automatically mean that it will work this time. You may also pay later if you choose the wrong course of action this time. A bit like gambling with terrible odds. She is the banker, and we all know that the banker nearly always wins.

The second excerpt is about when I went to live with nuns, from my book ‘Simply Does It‘ –

When I had first arrived at the convent Sarah had encouraged me to explore both the main building and the grounds at my leisure. I was interested in all of it. I wanted to immerse myself in the whole process during my stay so that I could understand how the simplicity factor of their lives really worked for them. I needed to learn from the nuns so that I could accomplish more when I returned to the outside world. I knew that to do this I needed to visit all of the communal rooms in turn, and to spend time taking in the sights and sounds of each one to make sure that I fully immersed myself in the atmosphere of each area so that I got the full value from my time at the convent.

There were several bedrooms and bathrooms on the first floor. Each floor was around a central quadrant which was framed by very ornate stonework cloisters and lovely arched windows. Walking through these cloisters was like walking back in time. It felt quite surreal. Like I had been momentarily transported into someone else’s life, feeling what they felt, thinking their thoughts, and walking their walk. I liked that the cloisters could be used in all sorts of weather as they were deep enough to shield you from the rain no matter what direction it came from. They were a very simple but clever design.

Now, lets talk About YOU:

If you had to describe yourself to someone who has never met you, what might you say?

Gosh, that’s a difficult one. I would have to say that I am an honest and supportive person, with a passion for writing and books. That I care about people and the environment, and genuinely want to make things better whenever I can. That I am a good listener who tries not to judge too. Physically – rounded, with rosy cheeks, and a good heart!

If you could meet one person from the past, who might it be and why?

What an interesting question! The person that I would most like to meet from the past is actually still alive. But I am hoping that you will indulge me with this one. He was born several generations before me so is still technically from the past I guess. His name is Leslie Phillips and he is a British actor. When I was a child my mother always watched films that he was in. I always wanted to be the same age as him in the films that he made in the 50’s. He played parts where he was always suave and sophisticated, with a very posh accent. I thought that he was a dreamboat. So, really I wanted to meet him because of the parts that he played. I would like to ask him what makes him tick.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime?

It has to be reading. I am a book-a-holic. There will never be enough time for me to read all of the books that I want to in one lifetime. Not in ten lifetimes in fact.

Describe Your Dream Getaway Destination. Have you ever been there? What makes this place Irresistible to you?

Any of the Scottish islands would be the place for me. I love peace and open spaces. I also love ragged coastlines and weather which isn’t too hot, so they are the ideal sort of place for me. Since visiting Scotland many times a as child, and reading a book called ‘Island on the Edge: A Life on Soay‘ I have been even more obsessed about wanting to go there. So, watch this space!

Do you have a Mantra?

I certainly do – ‘I can and I will’. I repeat that to myself all the time, sometimes out loud in public places too 🙂 It has definitely helped me to believe that I can and I will at many points during my life. So, I will keep on using it.

What “Charity” or “Cause” do you feel passionately about & Why?

A percentage of the profits from my books go to Autism charities. I chose those because two members of my family have Autism. They are very high functioning and so live almost like their peers. But obviously Autism is close to my heart because of them. I also worked with people who have learning disabilities for nearly 30 years, and so have both a carer and family perspective on it. It is a disability which is often misunderstood. Plus there is a stigma related to the word Autism. People tend to see the disability instead of the ability. Some of the greatest people ever born, like Einstein, were Autistic. We all have disabilities of a kind. I truly believe that now is the time to focus on people’s abilities rather than on what they can’t do.

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to answer your questions Morgan. I really do appreciate it!

And Thank YOU Jan/Melanie for sharing your time and talent with BnV.

.

~Morgan~

Today I would like to introduce you to fellow Author Lesa Kay Smith, who is a registered nurse from a small town in south central Iowa. Lesa felt a strong desire to write the story of the tragic loss of her middle son, Brandon, in 2008. Beautiful Gift is the story of how she found him in the afterlife, how she communicates with him, and how she- and the rest of her family- have an ongoing relationship with him.

Hi Lisa, Please tell us about your book(s):

Beautiful Gift is a memoir about a mother’s love and how she survived the wrenching loss of her son, how she searched for him and found him in the afterlife–with the help of a brilliant clairvoyant–and how their conversations across the great divide convinced her that her son wasn’t lost and blossomed into a new stage in their relationship, enlarging both of their spiritual learning and light.

What Inspired you to write your book?

After the death of my son in 2008 I started receiving signs from him on the other side, dimes mostly. Which led me to start journaling and thinking about the afterlife and what it entailed. I was also inspired to send a message of hope to others who had suffered the same great loss. I searched in many places to find some ways to cope and find direction on how to cope myself. I realized there were not many. I decided to write this book to bring that message of hope. My thought process was if I could just help one person get through this shattering grief it would fulfill my purpose.

What do you feel is your best advice to share with other aspiring authors?

Purpose and passion are a must when writing. Write about what you know and your experiences.

To give readers an idea what you offer, are you willing to share a brief excerpt from your book? (less than 300 words, please)

I’d never tried to contact a loved one who had passed, and I had no idea what to expect or how a meeting with a medium worked. I felt totally apprehensive about what I was going to hear and learn today. But I was determined to find my son. I was shaking when I dialed the number. I heard the phone ring a couple of times.

“Hello,” Jamie answered, in a voice so sweet and soothing it put me to ease.

I poured out my reason for calling, being careful not to give away too much information because I wanted to be sure that Jamie was legitimate- that she truly had the rare gift of what used to be called second sight.

“Is my son there?” I asked urgently, suddenly filled with excitement that I could possibly make contact with Brandon. “Yes,” Jamie said, “he is.” Then she went on to say, “I see a gun. Is that what caused your son’s death?”

What is your blog about, what do you offer on it?

My blog offers different accounts of things that have happened and continue to happen, since my son has passed.

Why did you start your blog?

To share the stories my family has experienced.

Conversely, is there anything you find difficult to write about?

The first chapter of my book called “The Darkness” was by far the most difficult thing I have ever written. Having to dig deep and bring back what had happened was difficult.

OK, now the part that most authors dislike…Please tell us about YOU:

If you were asked to Describe yourself in 5 words, which would you choose?

Mother, Spiritual, Grateful, Determined, Intuitive.

When you are NOT writing, do you have a favourite pastime?

Travel and Music.

What is most important to you?

The most important to me is family no question.

.

Lesa’s story is one I felt compelled to share and I hope you may also find it Inspiring and might choose to Please visit Lesa at her blog

Today I have the pleasure of sharing fellow Poet Neha from Forgotten Meadows blog.
Neha is a dreamer, a published writer, and a business professional. She enjoys blogging and welcomes feedback from her readers. She hopes her writing makes you think and admire the little things life has to offer and reminds us that we always have time to imagine, to dream, and to follow your passion in life.

Please Introduce us to your Blog.  What is it all about?   What sorts of posts do you lean towards?  My blog forgottenmeadows.wordpress.com is a personal poetry and photography blog. I lean towards posts that are positive and spread the message of hope with my readers.

What Inspires and stirs your creativity?  I am a dreamer who loves to imagine, so it’s partly my imagination that stirs my creativity and of course, there is mother nature, my greatest source of inspiration.

Conversely, what do you find difficult to write about?  Loss and grief is difficult to write about, but it’s in writing that I find solace during these times.

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/posts?  As mentioned earlier, I like to share the message of hope, I also hope to share the message to follow one’s dreams, the message of love towards one another, towards oneself, and towards earth and the message of peace.

What Inspires you to write your poetry?  This response is the same as what inspired my creativity. 😊

From what Point of View do you prefer to write? Is there a reason?  It depends on the individual piece, I have written poetry in all three.

Please share two or three of your favourite poems and tell us a little about them:  I am a bit of both, most of my poetry just comes to me intuitively but there are times where I painstakingly plot it out to fit a certain form, especially when I am trying an unfamiliar or new poetic style. Below are three of my poems that the reader might enjoy.

Let me find hope is about finding hope in the darkest days, Travel Dreams is about travel and exploring your curious heart, and Don’t give Up on You is about not giving up on oneself.

If you had to describe yourself to someone who has never met you, what might you say?  I am an optimist and a dreamer, trying to pursue my passion for creative writing.

If you could meet one person from the past, who might it be and why?  I would like to meet Rumi or Plato and just have a conversation with them. I would like to feel enriched with the thoughts from their beautiful minds.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime?  Spending time with my loved ones, trying new recipes and reading! 😀

Do you have a Mantra?  I have two: Everything will be alright and never stop dreaming!

In The Lime Light – #AuthorInterview with James J. Cudney

12 Sunday Nov 2017

Author Intervies, Author spotlight, BnV, BooknVolume, Indie Authors, Inspirational Books, Supporting Indie Authors, ~Morgan~

Today I am talking with fellow Creativia author James J. Cudney.  Hi James. …oh sorry, you like Jay,,.. Hi Jay!

Please tell us a little about yourself and your writing:

James is my given name; most call me Jay. I grew up on Long Island and currently live in New York City, but I’ve traveled all across the US (and various parts of the world). After college, I spent 15 years working in technology and business operations in the sports, entertainment and media industries. Although I enjoyed my job, I left in 2016 to focus on my passion: telling stories and connecting people through words. My debut novel is ‘Watching Glass Shatter,’ a contemporary fiction family drama with elements of mystery, suspense, humor and romance. I typically write in contemporary or historical fiction, mystery, thriller or suspense, with a focus on family drama.

Outside of writing, I’m an avid genealogist (discovered 2K family members going back about 250 years) and cook (I find it so hard to follow a recipe). I love to read; between Goodreads and my blog at https://thisismytruthnow.com, I have over 500 book reviews which will give you a full flavor for my voice and style. On my blog, I started the 365 Daily Challenge, where I post a word each day that has some meaning to me, then converse with everyone about life. There is humor, tears, love, friendship, advice and bloopers. Lots of bloopers where I poke fun at myself all the time. Even my dog has a weekly segment called “Ryder’s Rants” where he complains about me. All these things make up who I am; none of them are very fancy or magnanimous, but they are real and show how I live every day.

Everything doubles as something else when you live in NYC. For me, it’s the dining room, my favorite space in the apartment, where more than just my cooking is on display! As I look out the windows onto a 12th floor terrace, various parts of nature (trees, bushes, flowers, bugs & animals) inspire me to write. Ryder, my 10-year old shiba inu, usually lays on my feet, growling when I shift positions too many times or when I forget to share my food! Although he’s only 20 pounds, he’s quite strong and pushy. But how else can you pen the best story possible without these things by your side?

Tell us about your book(s):

Watching Glass Shatter, my debut novel, a contemporary fiction and family saga novel, was published on October 8th, 2017. It’s a 6-month look at a family affected by the death of the patriarch and a secret he leaves behind in his will. The secrets send his widow, Olivia, on a journey to re-connect with each of their 5 adult sons before she learns the full extent of something that happened many years ago to Ben. The book is structured to show important scenes in each family member’s life, alternating chapters for all the major characters. Readers get to see each family member’s grief, but they also learn of more secrets being kept from Olivia and her eventual reactions to each off them. As she begins to unfold the mystery, the story brings everyone back together for a family meeting which should have taken place years ago. It’s almost too late when it finally happens, but through it all, every card is put on the table and the walls are broken down. Some characters will be ok; some will not be. It’s a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. I also just announced there will be a sequel in the Fall of 2018 which will have a similar look at what happens to the family after everything is finally revealed – or was it!

Father Figure, my second novel, in its final editing stage, will be released in early 2018. It’s the story of two women, separated by about twenty years, each trying to discover who they are. Amalia Graeme suffers at the hands of a vindictive mother, but she desperate to find love and escape her small Mississippi town. In Brianna Porter’s story, which takes place 20 years later in NYC, she finds a connection to Amalia while trying to locate the father she never knew. In alternating chapters, each woman’s life takes a few steps towards something positive, but she is pushed back down by the people around her. Readers will see what happens in one chapter and then understand the impact on the other woman nearly 20 years later in the next chapter. It’s a story about parents, children, love, loneliness, maturity and devastation. No characters are safe from loss in this one, especially when someone is desperate to keep a secret hidden. Ultimately, Amalia wants her freedom and Brianna wants to meet her father. Unfortunately, those two things cannot happen at the same time.

Are you a painstaking plotter or are you a discovery writer?

I am a painstaking plotter. I write a very detailed 30-page outline before I begin writing the story. Once I have a very strong handle on the story, I will entertain changes along the way as characters speak to me and idea appear. Let’s say 90% plotter and 10% discovery!

Although it’s often hard to select just one, do you have a favourite or least favourite character?

I adore everyone in the Glass family, from my first novel. Ultimately, I have two favorite characters. One is Olivia, the matriarch who must address all the secrets in the family. The second I cannot reveal until 11/20 after my “favorite character” poll is completed. I am planning a surprise for fans of my work which is dependent upon which character wins this poll. To see more, check out:

What do you feel is your best advice to share with other aspiring authors?

Writers need to know why they write before they can be successful. It’s a bit like knowing your objective or goal with anything. Until you know the outcome, it’s hard to navigate a path or even know when you’re truly finished. If it’s fame and fortune, then you have to spend equally as much time marketing and promoting as you do writing. If it’s creativity, and all about reaching people, then write great stories and post them free on as many sites as possible. If it’s a balance of both, you need to do something every day to work towards your goal, whether it’s writing 500 words or sending out a few tweets. Knowing your tone, style and voice as a writer, but also as an author and a person, is equally as important to your success.

To give readers an idea what you offer, are you willing to share a brief excerpt from your book?

“Because one by one, I’m losing them. I’ll never again have those intense innocent dreams. I’ll never be that little girl who imagines falling in love, stripping petals off a forget-me-not until the last one says, ‘he loves me so.’ I won’t ever get to dance in a magic that heals the world. And my heart knows what darkness lies in wait each night, stealing a piece with every sun that sets and moon that rises.”

Olivia’s eyes glistened from the stars yet to disappear across the morning sky. She couldn’t cry anymore even if she wanted to. “Was I a good mother?” She screamed at the top of her lungs, long and piercing, scattering a few birds out of the trees above them.

Diane covered her ears as she rushed over to her sister. She at first went to cradle her and provide comfort, but a wave of energy consumed Diane, and she instead shoved Olivia into the pool. Diane’s hands trembled as she watched what she’d done, releasing the pressure from a seventy-year-old radiator valve long overdue. A gasping hiss rose above the pool’s gentle waves.

As she sunk to the pool floor, Olivia found relief forming within her body from finally telling someone else what had transpired. Kicking her feet with the swiftness of a school of fish escaping a shark, she shot to the surface and swam to the edge for safety. “Was that necessary?”

“I’m sorry, Liv. I… I… thought it would help. You were so intense.” Diane’s eyes shined as though she suddenly realized everything Olivia had spewed. “What do you mean dying?”

Do you have a blog?  What is the link?

Yes, This Is My Truth now started in early 2017 and can be found @ https://thisismytruthnow.com. I have over 500 book reviews, author profiles with Q&A, the revealing 365 Daily Challenge and fun polls, awards and tags. There’s something for everyone!

What do you enjoy writing about most?

Family connections, relationships, secrets and drama. It’s what we live every day, but if I can do it in a way where readers both learn and enjoy themselves, I’m completely in my element.

OK, now the part that most authors dislike (bwa-hahaha!) Please tell us about YOU and Describe yourself in 5 words:

Organized, Introspective, Obsessive, Open-Minded, Eclectic

When you are NOT writing, do you have a favourite pastime?

Genealogy. I’ve assembled a family tree going back to the 1700s with about 2500 people. I love researching past connections and finding new branches to explore.

Do you have a Rule to Live By?

It’s as simple as “Do unto others as you would have done unto you.” I have very high expectations for myself and for other people; I try to do the fair thing on all occasions. It’s hard to balance getting your feelings hurt with progress, but I try not to take anything personally. I just want to help people figure out how to be more careful and considerate.

Is there a “Charity” or “Cause” you feel passionately about & Why?

I’m an animal lover, so pet care is very important to me.

.

Today I’d like to introduce you to A.J.Griffiths-Jones who was born near Shrewsbury, Shropshire. She has traveled extensively in her career and has recently returned to England after ten years working as Language Training Manager for a prominent bank in Shanghai.  A.J. has studied genealogy for many years and has a special interest in the world of Victorian crime.

After researching the life of notorious poisoner Dr.Thomas Neill Cream for many years, her debut book ‘Prisoner 4374’ was published in May 2015.
She is currently working on a second ‘Jack the Ripper’ related book, together with a series of novels.

Hi A.J. Please Introduce us to your Blog.  What is it all about?   What sorts of posts do you lean towards?

I like to keep my website as varied as possible as I have a lot of interests & I’m very aware that my readers come from all walks of life. I post book reviews, original recipes that I’ve created, updates on my historical research, things that I love & I have recently started interviewing celebrities in a page called ‘Five Minutes With…’where they are asked a few random questions for fun.

What Inspires and stirs your creativity?

I’ve always been inspired by history, in any shape or form, whether it be people, events or fashion. I love to research a subject first & then put a new spin on an old tale.

Conversely, what do you find difficult to write about?

I am hopeless at writing about romance. I’m a bit of a closed book when it comes to emotions & any scenes that require a splash of love I struggle with.

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/posts?

I would love for my readers to grasp how much time & effort goes into creating a book & to understand that not authors are millionaires. There are so many fantastic writers struggling to get their books seen & talked about, so I try to introduce new & upcoming authors at every opportunity.

How has your blog helped you as a writer/Indie Author? What things have you learned along the way that you never anticipated?

I have earned a lot of respect in crime circles, that being my main area of expertise & interest, which has given me the opportunity to share parts of my work that my readers wouldn’t usually be exposed to. It’s also taught me never to take things for granted, as you never know what’s just around the corner.

What Inspired you to write your book?

I have been researching the unsolved crimes of ‘Jack the Ripper’ for as long as I can remember & after a serious illness I was unable to work, which gave me the opportunity to create my first book. After that, I decided to try my hand at writing cosy mysteries, inspired by tales that my grandmother had told me. Five mystery books later, I’m now looking at new ways to challenge myself.

From what Point of View do you prefer to write? Is there a reason?

I like to put myself in the shoes of the person that I’m writing about, to imagine what they’re seeing, thinking, doing & even smelling, to try to get a very real perspective on my characters. My first book, ‘Prisoner 4374’ was written in an autobiographical sense & really helped readers to understand the man behind the crimes.

How would you describe your “Voice” or Style of writing?

I have a very dry sense of humour which I think shows through in my writing. My characters often roll their eyes or have exaggerated mannerisms & quirky personalities. I can be quite ‘deep’ too, depending on what I’m working on & I’m not afraid to experiment with different styles.

What genre do you prefer to write or are you truly eclectic?

I prefer historical crime but realise that to grow as a writer I must be prepared to try different genres. I recently completed my very first children’s book, which was completely out of my comfort zone. I’m pleased with the result and it’s helped me to explore a whole new creative side that I didn’t know I had.

Do you painstakingly plot out your story; are you a discovery writer or a bit of both? Why?

I always plot out the bare bones of my stories & create the characters by making profiles before starting. I like to know everything about them before writing, their likes/dislikes, how they’re connected to other characters, what they look like, how they speak etc. The only thing that I don’t do is decide upon the ending, I like my characters to lead me along & shock me in the last chapter.

Do you have a favourite or least favourite character? And Why?

My favourite character is Grace from ‘The Seasiders’, the long suffering wife of lazy, overweight Dick. Set in the 1960s, this book shows how traditional women were in those days, taking care of the home, cooking meals from scratch every day & treating a night out at the local pub as a big event. Grace is also a free spirit in her own way, which readers will see as they progress through the tale, and she has a few ingenious surprises up her sleeve!

Share an insight or secret about your book(s).

When writing ‘Prisoner 4374’, my Ripper suspect book, I put up photographs of Dr. Cream, my subject, on my desk & all the writing was done at night by candlelight, because I wanted to feel as though he were penning his own story. I’ve used actual sentences from Cream’s prison files & letters to add to the authenticity and there are actually two chapters in the book that feel more like they came directly from me than him. Weird I know but it works well.

What do you feel is your best advice to share with other aspiring authors?

I believe that there is a reader for everyone. You can’t expect to write a bestseller first time around, and you may need to try several different genres before you find your comfort zone but keep at it & listen to your readers.

Would you like to share an excerpt from the book or a poem or two to give readers an idea what you offer?

This is from ‘Prisoner 4374’, the end of Chapter Nine : ‘For now I will leave you with the vision of Dr. Thomas Neill relaxing in front of a roaring fire, with legs stretched out akimbo, boots strewn across the floor and a good book at his side. A plentiful supply of opiates lined the infamous medical bag and a fully replenished stream of murderous deeds furnished the good doctor’s dreams. Life was grand, and it was just about to get better.’

If you had to describe yourself to someone who has never met you, what might you say?

I’m easy going & take life one day at a time. I’m passionate about things that I believe in & non-confrontational about the things I don’t agree with, although I don’t take criticism easily. I’m young in my outlook & terrified of old age but I try to enjoy everything that I do & live life to the full.

If you could meet one person from the past, who might it be and why?

I would love to meet Albert Einstein. He was an eccentric genius, with a crazy fashion sense. I’d love to hear his thoughts on today’s world & with that twinkle in his eye, I know we’d have a good giggle.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime?

I love travelling & with that comes reading, naturally. Having lived in China for a decade, I’m very curious about other cultures & lifestyles. After finishing writing each new book, I usually book a holiday with my husband & most of the time it’s to a different location. This also gives me chance to catch up on some new author’s work & recharge my batteries, so to speak.

Describe Your Dream Getaway Destination.  Have you ever been there?  What makes this place Irresistible to you?

I love New Zealand. We travelled around both islands in a winnebago about seven years ago & the scenery was spectacular. Some days we would be on the road & not see another vehicle for hours. You can be on a beach watching seals at breakfast & have supper in the shadow of a mountain glacier, it’s just the most diverse country that I’ve ever been to.

Do you have a Mantra?

Work hard, play hard. Seriously, you only get one shot at life so I work hard & then enjoy the fruits of my labour with some serious relaxation. I’m married but don’t have children which gives us the freedom to explore the globe & chill out with spa breaks, but when we’re working, we work very, very hard.

What “Charity” or “Cause” do you feel passionately about & Why?

I’m passionate about many charities & causes but having had friends & family members who’ve had cancer, I would have to say that the MacMillan Trust is top of my list. The nurses there do a fantastic job of caring for both the ill & their family members and very often go above & beyond their duties to ensure that the cancer treatment, after effects and sometimes death, is dealt with in the most sympathetic & professional manner. They really are amazing.

In The Lime Light – #AuthorSpotlight with #Fantasy #Writer Jacob Peppers

.

I recently met Fantasy Author Jacob Peppers via Facebook.  Really what caught my eye was the cover of his new release.  I was just drawn to the character, wondering what was happening and why he looked so distressed (so me, right?!)  So I reached out the Jacob to see if I could find out more.

Jacob Peppers lives in Armuchee, Georgia with his wife and three dogs.  His short story, “The Lies of Autumn,” was  a finalist for the 2013 Eric Hoffer Award for Short Prose.  His other short works have been published in various literary journals.  He is the author of A Sellsword’s Compassion, a debut fantasy novel and book one of The Seven Virtues, and The Silent Blade, a Seven Virtues novella.

Hi Jacob..Thanks for taking some of your valuable time to chat with me about your writing and your book that so intrigued me.  So tell me…..

What Inspires and stirs your creativity? Oh, that’s a pretty long list.  I’m much more of a discovery writer than a plotter; I tend to write from situations and, at most, will have a few scenes I know I want to include in the book when I start a draft.  Because of this, I’d say I’m inspired daily–books I read, movies I watch, and interactions I have.  All of those feed into the writing, and I think, for me at least, they help to keep it fresh and challenging.

Tell us about your book(s):
My recently published novel is A Sellsword’s Compassion.  I published it with an accompanying novella, The Silent Blade, that comes before it in the chronology of the world.  As for A Sellsword’s compassion, it follows Aaron Envelar, a jaded sellsword who lives in the poor district of one of the kingdom’s major cities.  Aaron stumbles on the assassination of a prince and ends up getting wrapped up in a conspiracy involving the remaining royal siblings who are all battling for dominance of the kingdom.  Aaron finds himself followed by mythical assassins, a man with superhuman strength, and a ball of light claiming to be the embodiment of compassion.  The last makes for some fun back and forth when you have a man whose life has taught him only to look out for himself, and he ends up feeling things in a way that he hasn’t in a very long time.  Of course, he also gets some special abilities because of it, so maybe it’s an even trade.

What genre do you prefer to write or are you truly eclectic?
I’ve written in quite a few genres.  It’s in my nature to have a lot of projects going at once which is why I’ll be releasing The Son of the Morning, book one of the Nightfall Wars in early November, and another, as of yet untitled, novel in early December, another first for a series.  I write on a lot of things at once, so I try to make this up in volume, minimizing the wait between sequels as much as possible.  My short stories range from thriller to literary to horror and The Lies of Autumn, the short story that was the finalist for the 2013 Eric Hoffer award, is really a suspense story.  That being said, my biggest love is always for fantasy–what can I say?  I’m a grown man that loves magic.

What do you feel is your best advice to share with other aspiring authors?
Best advice?  Well, I’ve heard some great advice in my time so that’s a long list.  I think one of the major themes of Stephen King’s book, On Writing, encapsulates some of the best advice I could give.  If you want your writing to be your job, treat it like your job.  You don’t watch Netflix for five hours while you’re on the job–not if you want to keep it anyway.  You put in the time and you put in the effort–the book doesn’t get finished by magic.  Although, sometimes it can seem like it did.  Otherwise?  Brandon Sanderson has made some great points on this in his YouTube videos of his Creative Writing classes.  For example, any book or movie that I really like, I try to dilute that down as much as possible and ask myself what it was that struck me?  What was so powerful that I lost sleep to read it or to watch it?  That was some great advice for me, and I don’t think anyone would disagree that those two guys know what they’re doing.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime?
Hmm … sleeping?  No, seriously, I tell people you can describe my life by the three W’s.  Writing, working out, and spending time with my wife (in no particular order, of course, I’d rather not get divorced today.)  Aside from that?  Ping pong, video games, just about anything that gives me the chance to beat someone else–I have a tendency to be pretty competitive.

Describe Your Dream Getaway Destination.  Have you ever been there?  What makes this place Irresistible to you?
That’s easy–Ireland.  My wife and I went there a few years back, and it was incredible, the most beautiful place I’ve ever been.  I guess it’s hard to pin down one thing that makes it so irresistible.  It’s so green there, so uncultivated.  I’m a country boy at heart, and I’ve a love for open spaces, I guess.  It’s also the way people are there–the pace of life is slower and that’s a part of it but not all.  I’ll tell you this–we were there for over a week, and I heard one horn honk the whole time; it was me when I was climbing out of the admittedly disappointing rental car.  Overall, I think there’s just a rhythm, a beat to the culture that’s subtle but powerful anyway.  I love it, that’s all.  I’d be there right now if the wife gave the go ahead but hey?  We live on hope.

Do you have a Rule to Live By?
Oh, probably a billion of them.  I guess the one that I always tell myself, at least regarding my writing, is that there may be people out there (and there are, I promise, plenty of them) that are smarter than me, people who are better or more talented, but there will never be someone that works harder than me.  I’m a big believer in controlling the controllables and letting the rest fall away.  Cormac McCarthy addresses this in No Country for Old Men (one of the best books I’ve ever read) and I’m paraphrasing here, but basically it says if there’s nothing to be done about it, it’s not a problem it’s just an aggravation.  I believe that, but I think that means also that, for me at least, I need to hold myself accountable to doing everything I can, as often as I can, the best that I can.  It’s something I tell myself every time I sit down to write and, hopefully, it shows though in the books.

Please allow me to introduce fellow author E.C. Hibbs.  E.C. is the author of several novels, including the Tragic Silence series and MIPA Nominated YA fantasy Blindsighted Wanderer, and co-author of the award-winning charity anthology Dare to Shine. She also writes under the non-fiction pseudonym Charlotte E. Burgess, producing books on meditation and New Age subjects.

As an artist, she works in a variety of mediums such as graphite, acrylic paint, papercutting, and digital photomanipulation. She  holds a BSc (Hons) in Animal Behaviour and a Postgraduate Diploma in Wildlife Conservation from the University of Chester.

Besides writing, she reads obsessively, her favourite genres being the classics and all kinds of fantasy. She enjoys Disney and horror films, practising Shotokan karate, archery, hiking up mountains, and playing with her very cheeky cat Millie-Moo. She also models for the UK Alternative Fashion Fest in aid of local charities and S.O.P.H.I.E., and is an avid supporter of WWF.

She resides in Cheshire, North-West England, where she co-owns the family business Earthkin alongside her mother.

.

Please Introduce us to your Blog.  What is it all about?   What sorts of posts do you lean towards?

I used to run a traditional blog on my website, but I’ve recently moved over to YouTube because I find it more interesting to talk about topics to the camera. I tend to speak about writing tips for authors, which I often break down into five steps. I also cover my favourites from across the creative world, my thoughts on certain topics, and the occasional tag for fun. You can find me at www.youtube.com/echibbs

What Inspires and stirs your creativity?

It’s usually my readers and watchers getting in touch to tell me what areas of writing they are struggling with – I try to structure my posts around genuine problems, and it helps me to give back to everyone who enjoys my books and content. And sometimes an idea will just pop up out of the blue! I never really know!

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/posts?

I want to show my fellow authors that while writing can have its problems, there is always a way to solve them and create the book you want. All you need is patience, determination, and a sense of humour!

Tell us about your book(s):

I would class my books as all falling in the Young Adult fantasy range, but no two are ever the same. I’ve written medieval fantasies, paranormal thrillers, gothic stories, and more – each one dealing with different age groups, themes and locations. I suppose the thing which links them all is that they are all very character-driven. I really feel that characters must be believable, whether they’re protagonists or antagonists, for a story to work. So all of mine have layers to them and I spend a lot of time working out their psychologies, to make sure they are as real as possible.

What Inspired you to write your book?

I’m often influenced by myths and legends from around the world, but for The Sailorman’s Daughters, I didn’t need to look too far. It’s inspired by a story from Cornwall called The Mermaid of Zennor, combined with a few other maritime folktales and myths. It’s a common theme that sailors are seduced by mermaids, who then wreck their ships. But I thought, what if one sailor came home to his family on the land, but also had another child: a mermaid child? From that, the book was born.

From what Point of View do you prefer to write? Is there a reason?

I prefer third-person because I feel better equipped to move between characters and get a multitude of angles on a story. But I wrote first-person for the Tragic Silence series, and I didn’t mind it at all. I suppose I’ll just use whichever POV best suits the story in question!

How would you describe your “Voice” or Style of writing?

I’ve been told that my style is quite lyrical, and I would agree with that. Growing up I read a lot of classic literature and I think the old way of writing has rubbed off on me. I like creating prose that lets the mind wander a little, and ties in with the world and characters.

Do you painstakingly plot out your story; are you a discovery writer or a bit of both? Why?

I’m a bit of both, but I only let each kind of writing take centre stage at certain times. I spend a lot of time preparing for a book – it’s often longer than what I’ll spend actually writing. I do a ton of research and character development and then write the bare bones of the story in a walkthrough. I use that to figure out where the chapters need to be, find any plot holes before the real work begins, and then allow it to be like a guiding hand so I don’t wander too far off track. But with that done, when I actually write the story, I can really explore and go deep without worrying too much, because I’ve made myself an anchor with all the preparation work. I think it’s best to try and walk the line between both.

.

If you had to describe yourself to someone who has never met you, what might you say?

I’m a 26 year-old animal lover, Disney freak, and chocoholic. I’m also what you’d probably get if Wednesday Addams, Alice in Wonderland and Tinker Bell were thrown together.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime?

I’m also an artist, so I love drawing, painting and paper-cutting – all my artwork can be found on my website alongside my books. I also use paper-cutting for my family business Earthkin, which I run along with my mother – we sell handmade figurines and silhouette jars as well as jewelry and clothing. In the activity department, I enjoy archery, karate, and hiking.

Describe Your Dream Getaway Destination.  Have you ever been there?  What makes this place Irresistible to you?

Without question, Finland. It might seem like a strange one to pick, but I absolutely adore being up in the Arctic, driving a husky sled and sitting under the Northern Lights. I go there as often as I can.

What “Charity” or “Cause” do you feel passionately about & Why?

I’ve supported WWF ever since I can remember, and especially since I studied animals and wildlife at university. Another one I’m really passionate about is The Sophie Lancaster Foundation, a UK charity which aims to stamp out prejudice, hatred and intolerance. I actually organized and co-authored an anthology on their behalf called Dare to Shine, which was released last year.

.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Fantasy Author T J Green about her book and writing.  T J Green was born in England, but moved to New Zealand 10 years ago. She currently lives near Wellington with her partner and her cats Sacha and Leia. When not writing she does lots of reading, gardening and yoga.

In a previous life she’s been a singer in a band, and has done some acting with a theatre company – both of which were lots of fun. On occasions she and a few friends make short films, which begs the question, where are the book trailers? Coming soon…

Tom’s Inheritance is T J Green’s first book, the sequel is called Twice Born, and was released in February 2017. She is now working on book 3, and also a few short stories which further expand the world of Tom in the Other.

Other projects include a book set in the real world – whatever that is – but there will be unusual things happening.

**** Bonus***  Tom’s Inheritance is available for free through Bookfunnel !!! – The Fey, the Lady of the Lake, and a summons to wake King Arthur

Please Introduce us to your Blog.  What is it all about?   What sorts of posts do you lean towards?

My blog is http://www.tjgreen.nz and primarily it’s a website about my writing and current projects. I talk about my characters, and background info that has influenced my books. I also read lots, so I review books of all kinds under the Reading Room. I host the occasional guest blog too.

What Inspires and stirs your creativity?

All sorts of things. I’m drawn to mysteries, fantasy and myths, and love the way that we all tell stories about our everyday life.

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/posts?

No particular message, but I hope whatever I post is interesting and informative.

How has your blog helped you as a writer/Indie Author? What things have you learned along the way that you never anticipated?

I’ve found I have more to write about than I thought I would – I wasn’t particularly keen on having a website initially, but knew I needed one. I’ve found I really enjoy it. I also love reading, so writing book reviews and helping out fellow indie authors seemed a natural progression – although not all the book I review are indie- published.

Writing a blog regularly is good writing discipline too.

Tell us about your book(s):

I have two books published at the moment, and I’m writing the third. They’re all part of an Arthurian Fantasy series. Tom’s Inheritance, the first book, is about a boy called Tom who goes looking for his missing grandfather and ends up in the Other. He finds he’s been summoned by the Lady of the Lake to wake King Arthur from his long sleep on Avalon. It’s a reboot of the Arthurian legends, set in the Other. There’s some old Arthurian characters and lots of new ones!

Twice Born is the second book, and it’s a mystery and adventure. Tom and King Arthur look for Nimue, a missing witch, and find out Merlin is involved. And there’s dragons too!

Book three – tentatively titled Galatine’s Curse, is all about Tom’s sword and it’s very strange history, which plunges them into another adventure.

What Inspired you to write your book?

I wrote a short story – which you can get if you subscribe to my newsletter – and from that the story developed. I always wanted to write a modern fairy tale, and it just evolved.

From what Point of View do you prefer to write? Is there a reason?

I like close third person point of view, I find it gives me more freedom in writing. First person is too restrictive, but I’m sure at some point it will be a POV I’ll use.

What genre do you prefer to write or are you truly eclectic?

Mystery, fantasy, adventure, magical realism, but I enjoy writing non-fiction too.

Do you painstakingly plot out your story; are you a discovery writer or a bit of both? Why?

I’m really a discovery writer. I start out with a loose idea and go from there. At some point I have to plot, but the act of writing helps it unfold.

Do you have a favourite or least favourite character? And Why?

My favourite character is probably Beansprout – Tom’s cousin – she’s feisty and fun, but Bloodmoon is a character in my second book, who comes back for book 3, and he’s great! There’s no least favourite – yet!

Share an insight or secret about your book(s).

Tom is the name of my 7 year old nephew – I named the lead character after him. He quite likes it!

What do you feel is your best advice to share with other aspiring authors?

Keep writing, don’t give up. Learn how to market effectively – still working on that one! And always hire a professional editor and cover designer – unless you’re a whizz with graphics.

Would you like to share an excerpt from the book or a poem or two to give readers an idea what you offer?

Excerpt from Twice Born – Chapter Three –

They had been looking for nearly an hour, taking their time drifting through the warren of buildings, before they had any joy. Walking down the start of one of the Holloways, they saw a vast tree to their left, pressing against the bank at its back. There was a narrow cleft in its trunk, above which a small sign announced The Hollow Bole. Peering upwards through the leaves they saw small windows scattered along thick and misshapen branches. Ducking to avoid hitting their head on the low entrance, they stepped into a small hall hollowed out of the trunk and followed the narrow spiralling stairs upwards into the gloom. They emerged into a larger hall built into a broad branch overlooking the Holloway and the edge of the square. There were no straight edges anywhere. Instead, the chairs, tables and balcony were an organic swirl of living wood.

A dryad, green skinned and willowy, stepped out of the shadows and said, “Can I help you?”

Thinking they were alone, Tom jumped. Arthur remained a little more composed and said, “I’m looking for an old friend who passed through here, probably a few weeks ago now. Can you confirm if she stayed here?”

“And what do you want with this friend?” the dryad snapped.

“She hasn’t arrived where she should have, and I want to find out if anything has happened to her,” Arthur said, trying to keep the impatience out of his voice.

The dryad went silent for a moment. “It depends who it is. Her name?”

“Nimue. Our mutual friend Vivian asked me to find her. She’s worried.”

The dryad was startled. “Nimue? The witch?” She spat out “witch” viciously.

Now Arthur was startled. “Yes, Nimue, one of the priestesses of Avalon. Or witch, as you choose to call her.”

“They are all witches on Avalon,” the dryad replied disdainfully. “Yes, she stayed here for a few days. And then she left. I don’t know where,” she added, to avoid further questions.

Please tell us About YOU:  If you had to describe yourself to someone who has never met you, what might you say?

I’ll quote my twitter page, it’s a good summary – Author of Tom’s Inheritance and Twice Born – Arthurian Fantasy. Reader, blogger, book reviewer, mildly addicted shopper, gardener, cat lover, yoga obsessive.

If you could meet one person from the past, who might it be and why?

Lawrence Durrell – my favourite author ever! I’ve read all of his books, many times.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime?

Reading and gardening.

Describe Your Dream Getaway Destination.  Have you ever been there?  What makes this place Irresistible to you?

I love Asia. I love the people, the markets, the weather, the food, and the shopping. Bali is a big favourite!

What “Charity” or “Cause” do you feel passionately about & Why?

I’m a big advocate for women’s rights, and to end violence against women. I also find it very disturbing that women’s access to family planning is being reduced, and that women’s choices are being eroded. Too many people think it’s acceptable – it’s not.

I’d like to introduce you today to fellow author Lynne Stringer.

Lynne Stringer has been passionate about writing all her life, beginning with short stories in her primary school days. She began writing professionally as a journalist and was the editor of a small newspaper (later magazine) for seven years, before turning her hand to screenplay writing, novels and professional editing.

Lynne is the author of the Verindon trilogy, a young adult science fiction romance series released in 2013. Her latest novel, released in October 2016, is Once Confronted, a contemporary drama. Visit http://www.lynnestringer.com for more information.

Please Introduce us to your Blog.  What is it all about?   What sorts of posts do you lean towards?

In my blog I talk about my journey as an author and editor. I talk about the daily trials of an author and sometimes I combine this with advice for new authors from both an author and editor’s perspective.

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/posts?

That being an author is a tough business. It’s rewarding but you should only do it if you love it, not because you think you’re going to become the next J.K. Rowling!

Tell us about your book(s):

I am the author of the Verindon trilogy, a young adult science fiction romance series about a girl named Sarah who thinks her life is completely normal until strange things start happening around her. When all is revealed, she’s taken out of this world and goes somewhere else …

What Inspired you to write your book?

My husband and I were going on holidays and on the long drive, he was trying to make me laugh by telling me cheesy pick-up lines. I was trying to think of some myself so I could join in the fun but the only one I could think of was, ‘You are the only reason I was put on this planet.’ I thought that sounded pretty lame and I imagined a guy saying it to a girl and she rolled her eyes, but then he said, ‘No, you are the only reason I was put on this planet.’ And I realized he meant it literally. I spent all our holiday wondering why and that’s when the Verindon trilogy was born.

From what Point of View do you prefer to write? Is there a reason?

I usually write in first person. I’m not sure why. That’s just the way it sounds in my head so that’s what I write.

Do you have a favourite or least favourite character? And Why?

My favorite character would have to be Dan. I admire him for his nobility and strength. I love Sarah, my protagonist, as well, for her compassion and sense of social justice. Another favourite character is Mr. Hatchet but you’ll have to read the books to find out all you need to know about him!

If you could meet one person from the past, who might it be and why?

I would like to meet Charlotte Bronte as I’m a big fan of her writing and the life of the Bronte family is something that fascinates me. She’s definitely an author who knows how to move you and can make you love or hate her characters in equal measure.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime?

I like to spend time with my family, read, and watch my favourite TV shows and movies. I’m definitely not a party animal.

In The Lime Light – #CharacterSpotlight with #Fantasy #Author C.B. Pratt

Today I am welcoming fellow author C.B Pratt, who will be sharing one of her Fantasy Characters with us through a Character Interview. The longest C.B. Pratt has ever lived in one place is seven years. Now somewhat settled in Orlando, Florida, she shares a house with a wizard, a snoring dragon disguised as a dog, and lots of bookshelves overloaded with arcane knowledge. A mix of wanderlust and a lifelong addiction to myths and fantasy fiction gave her the idea to write about Eno the Thracian, a traveling hero for hire of the Bronze Age. When not writing, C.B. is letting the dog out…then letting the dog in…then letting the dog out…

Her Character’s Name: Eno the Thracian

Her Book/Series Name: Hero for Hire

While all the Big Name heroes are off fighting the Trojan War, Eno the Thracian is the hero of choice for anyone with a mythological problem, from a mini-dragon menacing your flocks to a goddess on the edge of destruction. With a body like living rock, a deep knowledge of life, death, and olive oil, Eno lives up to his motto: Swift Sword, Reasonable Rates. Starring in five stand-alone but connected novels, Eno the Thracian has found friends and fans all over the world.

So…how’s the hero business these days?

First off, you have to understand what a ‘Hero’ is. He’s not just brave, daring, and astonishingly handsome…wait. Let’s start over. It’s a job. Like artist or philosopher. You want to entertain, you hire a musician. You want to build a fountain, you hire a stonemason. You’ve got a monster tearing up a vineyard, you hire a hero. Lately, the man for the difficult jobs has been me.

I apprenticed for a half dozen years or so with another professional Hero before taking over his contracts when he retired to marry the wall-eyed daughter of a local baker. He gave me a sword and a start in life. But what really boosted my career was the Trojan War. With all the usual heroes off fighting and the kings neglecting their kingdoms, there’s a lot of opportunities for a useful guy like me. And monsters have been increasing lately, both in numbers and in size. It’s a growth industry…if you live.

Tell us a little about where you grew up. What was it like there?

I grew up in the mountains of Thrace, with the sheep, the shepherds, and the wolves. My tribe is the Maedi. While our womenfolk live in huts year round, the men follow the herds, going up to the high country for the summer grasses and returning in the winter. We worship the same gods as the Greeks; some claim that Ares first came from our lands. While I love my home-land, I haven’t been back much. I grew up bigger than most and when I was about 16, I came down to the ‘civilized world’, where I’ve met more scoundrels, dangers, and lies than I would have met in a lifetime in the hills. Of course, I was never all that crazy about sheep. Not the greatest conversationalists.

After a few years, I settled in Athens. It’s an up-and-coming town, where the temples are slowly being replaced with stone, the king doesn’t get into much trouble or charge high taxes, and the weather’s good. I get a lot of clients from word of mouth but also from my sign in the agora: Hero for Hire. All monsters dispatched from carnivorous geese to Minotaurs. Special rates for multiples. Eno the Thracian at the sign of the Ram’s Head, one flight up.

What can you tell us about your latest adventure?

The biggest case I have had so far came about because of Aphrodite’s Thunderbolt. I saw this girl in the marketplace and – bam! – I was in love. But my purse was empty and her father was asking for a big bride-price. So off I went to catch a living Harpy. I figured I’d get paid twice for the same monster – once by the king of the island the Harpy was terrorizing, once by another king who liked to hunt monsters for trophies. Only it didn’t work out like that. Somehow the simple cases always turn into something worse…so much worse.

What did you think when you met a god for the first time?

A wise man makes his offerings and prayers to the Gods, but hopes in his heart never to meet one. I haven’t been that lucky. The Gods started taking an interest in me during this case; never a healthy place for a mortal to be. When I first met Aphrodite, I was overwhelmed by her beauty, awed by her power, and terrified by the ‘motherly’ interest she took in me. She made me her warrior, whether I liked it or not. Henceforth, I was working for Her. And her enemies became mine. But a goddess’ enemies are on a scale far exceeding anything I’ve ever fought before. When the fate of Olympus rests on a mortal’s shoulders, a wise man runs away. I guess I’m not that bright.

What was the scariest thing in your adventures?

Jumping blindly into the Underworld, with a extremely pissed-off minor goddess under one arm…dying on the way down. That is a moment I try not to remember, thank you very much. Actually, that wasn’t as bad as what happened later on…

Tell us a little about your friends.

There’s something I refer to as ‘hero math’. It doesn’t matter how many people start out on an adventure, the hero comes back alone. That’s why I try not to involve too many people in my ventures but somehow they keep showing up. Like Phandros. A drunkard and former teacher to the 50 sons of Pharaoh, he started getting the idea that I need somebody to look out for my interests. So he started tagging along and, if I’m going to be completely honest, he did help…a lot.

Whom (or what) do you really hate?

Everybody always thinks I must really hate monsters…but I don’t. You know, they didn’t ask to be born part-dragon, part-goat, part-lion. If it were up to me, I’d move them somewhere that they can’t get into trouble with people…or cows. But sometimes you have to take strong action. What I don’t like is people who decide to be evil. They always  have good reasons for turning bad, which they usually want to tell me all about in excruciating detail. I don’t have much patience with evil viziers, power-mad queens, or spoiled princelings…especially when they’re trying to kill me in inventive and painful ways.

What’s your favorite pastime? Any hobbies?

I’ve learned to enjoy cooking. I’m a big guy; I eat a lot. It gets expensive eating out on the road all the time. I live above a taverna in Piraeus Port called the Ram’s Head. They’re nice folks who don’t mind taking messages when I’m away. I also collect Minoan pottery when I can afford it, which isn’t often. That stuff is getting rarer all the time and you wouldn’t believe the counterfeiting that goes on. Mostly, though, my off-hours are spent training. Muscles like these don’t build themselves, you know.

What does the future hold for you?

It’s a little crazy, maybe, but I’ve been thinking about starting a school for heroes. There’s a lot that you need to know *before* you start the on-the-job training or the ‘getting killed’ part. For instance, cleaning ichor off your leather armor, knowing which head of a hydra is the leading one, and the vital importance of ducking early and often. Most of these young hot-heads just set off with a magic sword and helmet and have no idea what the Hades they’re doing. That’s not so bad but they tend to find a lot of trouble and someone like me has to get them out of it.

For the immediate future, though, I have a trip planned back to Thrace to see my mother. How much trouble could that be?
