There was a small village, set in the middle of nowhere. While the rest of the world updated their Facebook pages, Tweeted, LinkedIn, texted, posted, and multi-tasked at a pace even Data from the Enterprise would find impressive, this tiny island of inhabitation, cohabitation and harmony went on in blissful serenity. Isolated from the modern economy by miles of wilderness and separated from the modern culture of Want, Avarice, Greed, and Self-Promotion. This community set its standards for excellence by different measures.

Led by a Chief who was the most honorable, who was just and merciful, caring and compassionate, yet strict in his moral code, the people of the village lived in a collective accord with each other and with nature. They shared their wealth, as well as their poverty, equally; they worked together for the prosperity of all and, when needs arose outside their sphere of influence they would make appeals to their Chief to provide for them.

One day a young man came to the Chief with a request of pressing urgency. Sitting down at the fire with this young man, the Chief listened carefully to his concerns without interruption, his kindly expression filled with understanding and patience. The young man, however, was fretful, distracted, impatient and tense, and repeatedly rose from his place at the fire to pace around the room or go to the door and stare anxiously outward, his emotions ruling his thoughts and logic.

It was not a simple request he was making. What he needed was not something to be found within the limits of the village and the price of collecting it was costly. Nevertheless, the Chief listened, understood, and assured the young man he would work diligently on acquiring the item, regardless of how long it took. He asked the young man to wait until he sent word to him that the item had arrived and he could come back to get it. Agitated and unappeased, the young man went away.

The following week the young man returned. His countenance was shaken; his nerves were frazzled. He asked the Chief all over again for the item, repeating much of what he had already said, never giving the Chief a moment to assure him that the process of acquisition was already taking place and it would not be long until it would be shipped to the village. Overwrought with worry, the young man begged insistently, growing angry when the Chief tried to explain that the young man would have to wait just a bit longer.

Another week passed and no message came from the Chief to tell the young man the item had arrived. Thoroughly vexed, he decided to set out on his own for the towns, miles away through savage wilderness, with little money in his pocket. He did not know how he would attain the item he needed, but he carried with him a blade that would protect him from harm as well as convince those who sold the item of his urgent need. He left his home, his village and his chief.

The very next day word came to his hut that the Chief requested him to come to his tent at the center of the village. The item of his desire had finally arrived; the Chief had worked tirelessly, night and day, to raise funds so it could be purchased, packaged carefully, shipped and he now stood with the delicate, beautiful treasure in his hands, awaiting the young man’s arrival so he could give it to him and they could celebrate together.

The young man, however, did not come. He did not know the answer to his prayer was waiting for him, because he had wandered away out of impatience and anger. He did not know that all he had to do was come back to his Chief, open his hand and receive it.

How often I am like this young man. Blustering, Begging, Bartering, yet often, not quite patient enough. OH! What treasures have I lost because I wandered away!

noel

Beyond the barren, desperate plains,
The Weary, Calling to Heaven from earth;
Countless generations Cry in pain,
Breathlessly Awaiting a Royal Birth.
Light and Liberty, Outward Reaching,
Through all the years of Tribulation;
Prophets, Wisdom Gently Speaking,
Foretell Celestial Jubilation.
Across the skies of Darkness, Reaching
Down from Heaven on Bending Wing;
Love Imbued with Harmony, Teaching,
As Vast Choirs of Angels, Triumphantly Sing.
“Lift up your eyes with Joy, not Fear,
For Blessed Love Draws Gently Near.”

Star

Unto those mortals, meek and lowly,
Watching o’er their flocks by night;
Heralding a Birth, Humble and Holy,
Love Shines forth in a New Star’s Light.
Amidst sheep and cattle, quietly Attending,
Laid to sleep within a manger there;
While Praises through the bleak night, Ascending,
Mark the poor and modest Gloriously Fair.
Finding the Child in Bethlehem’s stall,
Humble Shepherds Bow to an Infant King,
Where Heaven, Bending to Bless one and All,
Smiles, while Angels a Lullaby Sing.
God’s own Child sent to Lead and Heal,
God’s Love and Grace, In Flesh Made Real.

A Thankful Heart is Open to Blessings
because it is closed to worry, doubt, and wailing.

A Thankful Heart is Filled with Love
because it empties itself of loathing, greed, and envy.

A Thankful Heart is Overflowing with Peace
because it does not Share itself with lies, distrust, and negativity.

A Thankful Heart Touches Others with its Blessings and Love
because it is Ever in the Presence of Love and Blessing.

A Thankful Heart Speaks in Kindness, Patience and Empowerment
because it does not Speak of hate, intolerance or to incapacitate.

A Thankful Heart Chooses its Path Each Day with Diligence and Joy
because it does not Concentrate on what it cannot do.

A Thankful Heart Walks in Hope, Love, Peace and Joy
because it Knows nothing else.

A Thankful Heart Shares its Purpose
because it is Incapable of Withholding All that Pours from its Abundant Profusion.

Embark upon Each New Day with a Thankful Heart
and You will Find Endless Blessings for which to be Thankful.

You are a Blessing for which I am very thankful. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. ❣

Reassurance

Reassurances Come
When I am not even Thinking,
Keeping me Focused
When My Heart is sinking.

Whispers Come softly
While I am still Sleeping,
Straightening my tread
On the Course I am Keeping.

Smiles Rain down
From the Heaven’s Above,
Reminding me Always
Of Unconditional Love.

Joy in the Journey,
The Lesson I’m Learning,
Walking Beside me, You
Keep me from Turning.

Yet, when I do Stray
From the Path Leading Home,
And when Doubts fill my mind,
Reassurances Come.

Listening for Miracles – An Exploration of #Music and #Spirituality

Depeche Mode is one of my all time favourite bands…hands down, no contest, don’t have to think twice about it. Love Dave Gahan’s delicious baritone, love the synthetic, tribal quality of the music, love Martin Gore’s tremulous tenor, love his gift with words…. but this particular song has always made me sad. Not because of the obvious reasons though, not because the girl dies or because the poor mother is grief-stricken, (sorry, spoiler alert!) but because Martin, David, and perhaps more than a good share of the audience, doesn’t seem to hear the Miracle contained in the lyrics.

First, if you are unfamiliar with the song, Blasphemous Rumours, then you should take a moment to listen to it before continuing on…(just a suggestion, really)

Sad tale? Yes. God vindictive and unfair? Not likely. Why not? How I can possibly say not? Look at it from another angle:

Sad Girl is lost, alone, hurting, who knows why, we aren’t told. She thinks life is too hard and doesn’t want to go on trying, so she makes the ultimate final attempt, but she doesn’t succeed. (“Thank the Lord for small mercies”..to quote the song.) She fails at failing.  It takes time to recover, years, but she comes to the ultimate realization that LOVE is all around her; beautiful, joyful, ever-present, guiding, protecting…like a parent who cares unconditionally, or a best friend who never gives up on you, or like your most precious pet, who adores you unreservedly. She finally understand this LOVE and is Happy.

Suddenly, her time is up. No one can control our finiteness, life is brief. It seems like such a tragedy, especially since she only just found LOVE, but it’s not a tragedy, it’s a Miracle. Had she died without realizing how much LOVE is around her, inside her, watching over her, caring for her, she may never have been happy and she would have died, alone, bitter, lost forever in that pit of despair.(because I believe we go on afterward into what we value, create and share here on earth in this life….but that is another post altogether) …yet because she failed at failing, she succeeds.

She heard the Miracle.

So yes, very sad song, but not for the reasons you thought…

.

20 years ago I was the manager of a retail music store called The Wall.   While working there, I met a young man who so influenced my life that I actually had a series of posts early on in my BnV career that were inspired by him (The Burning Questions).  He had a particularly intriguing habit of coming into work each day with a specific question. He would pose this question and we would spend the remainder of the day discussing amongst ourselves our thoughts and opinions on the selected topic. Who is the best band of all time? What is the best song ever written?  Do ghosts exist?  Is there a God?  And always, WHY?  They were some of the best conversations I’ve ever had. They must have been, because I still remember.

Fast forward 20 years.  Lives change, tragedies and challenges happen, and Inspiration Leads. This same young man is now a father and husband, pastor of his own church, a relatively new blogger and the author of his first book.  (I say first, because Im certain there will be many).  I shared a post by him just last week called “Youth Sports — Love With A Capital L” and now I’d like to introduce you to him.  So grab a beverage, curl up with a blanket and enjoy …..

.

My name is Chad and this is my profile.

These sorts of things always seem vain and self-important, but I can’t figure out why. We wear name tags, introduce ourselves, smile and invite each other to our parties. This is all a very natural overflow of our human need to connect, to see ourselves as part of a bigger story. When I can find a real-life bookstore, I look at the titles, cover art, and excerpts for the same reason: to find somewhere I can belong, someone I can relate to, a hand to hold.

I guess this impulse is why I/we do anything.

I write often and from a pretty specific point of view. That we are loved and accepted by Our Creator – this perspective is the life-line that runs through every word, even if it is never stated. Because you can tell, right? You can tell if someone thinks you are worthy and beautiful. Religion has so often come down on the wrong side of this, showing people we are garbage, we are primarily sinners possessing no real intrinsic value. It’s why I ran from God, Jesus, and spirituality for most of my life. Once I woke up to the fact that this couldn’t have been further from the truth, woke up to the fact that I was loved, here, now, today, what else could I do but spend the rest of my life as a modern-day street preacher? Instead of sandwich boards pointing to a fiery hell, my tools are my heart to open and my arms to wrap around a cold and lonely world who has believed a lie for way too long.

I started the Bridge Faith Community where I teach on Sunday mornings, write on 2 blogs; bridgefaithcommunity.com and lovewithacapitall.com, and now I wrote a book; Chronicles, Nehemiah and Other Books Nobody Reads, that you can get at lulu.com or at my house.

The Bridge blog is very spiritual, mixing my life with Scripture in an attempt to clearly display that God is not somewhere else, that He is here, if only we have eyes to see.

Love With A Capital L is a bit more fun, mixing my life with, well, your life and the art I see/hear/experience and the things that make today explosive and ordinary and painful and overwhelming and totally worthwhile.

These things are the way I express myself, but to be honest, my favorite work of art is my life. I have been given gifts I could never have imagined and been blessed far beyond my wildest dreams. I have 2 of the sweetest boys you have ever met, Samuel and Elisha, and a wife who is truly an Angel. So, I might make it to a million or I might die tomorrow, but I will be thankful for every moment.

Now that it’s finished, maybe it is vain and self-important, but it was pretty fun, too.

Love & Peace.

Chad.

Here is a chapter of the book:

XXIII. Everyone Needs A Hand To Hold On To

Let’s take this one day at a time, I’ll hold your hand if you hold mine.

Rumors of My Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated, Rise Against

If picture’s worth a thousand words then your touch is worth them all.

Dance, Dance Christa Paffgen, Anberlin

For the closing prayer, everyone at the Bridge stands and holds another’s hand in each of their own. Now, for some, this introduces an element of dread into an otherwise safe environment. I’ve seen some hurry from their seats into the lobby or their car when they begin to sense the message winding down. For others, this is the perfect end to their morning.

At the Bridge, we give an awful lot of thought to the environment we create. From the color to the art on the walls to the music and placement of the tables and food, the narthex (a super-fancy term for lobby that I just love) is designed for welcoming comfort. The people are engaging and kind, the food is terrific, entering is easy and non-threatening.

However, once the service starts, there is a different aim altogether. The Scriptures invite us into a transformation, a spiritual re-birth, and transformations are never comfortable. Has there ever been a woman, reflecting on childbirth, that would say it was anything other than stressful, arduous, and exhausting? It’s called labor.

Of course, the primary announcement of the Gospel, the Good News, is one of grace, forgiveness, rescue, and life. No matter who you were, what you’ve done, where you’ve been, you can come home. Not only can you come home, but the Creator of the Universe, and the Creator of you, has been waiting for you with the table set. He has never stopped loving you. You do not have to get it together, stop doing whatever, start doing whatever, or climb any kind of ladder of achievement. He loves you and accepts you, exactly as you are, here, now, today.

That IS Good News.

My wife fell in love and married me. That was really good news, too. She accepted me as I was, scars and all. I had many habits and vices, none of which I’ll detail here and none of which were honoring to a woman as lovely as Angel. She loved me anyway in spite of my flaws, the way I was.

There is really only one response to that kind of overwhelming love; to live into those shoes, into that identity. (Obviously, the love of my wife is a laughably poor comparison to the love of Jesus Christ, but sometimes laughably poor comparisons are all we have. The Taylor Swift song ‘Begin Again’ makes me cry because it points me in the direction of my God.) If someone sees you, loves you, speaks a fresh word about you, and you believe it, that can change everything about you, everything about the way you live. All of the things that you settled for before that moment suddenly aren’t good enough. You are a child of the Living God, made in His image, and there is an honor and dignity to that. Some things are beneath you now. You are made to fly, not to crawl in the muck at the bottom of any gross barrel you see.

But leaving old lives behind is hard. Shedding that skin is painful, full of starts and restarts.

Welcome to Church, right?

Welcome to the road.

Welcome to a full capital-L Life.

Ideally, you come inside and you hear you are the beautiful artwork of God, loved beyond reason. And you weep.

Then you realize that you have erected all sorts of walls, carried such heavy baggage, worn thick iron chains around your neck, locked yourself in a prison you have built. You have believed so many lies that this is all you are worth.

And again you weep.

But it’s LOVE that exposes those lies. It’s LOVE that gives you the tools to break those chains, destroy those walls, and demolish that prison. Tearing down the cage you’ve constructed forever is hard, terrifying work, not for the weak.

Or for the unconnected.

We live in a culture that glorifies the individual, the loner, the hero who pulls herself up by the bootstraps. Our culture has minimized actual personal contact until we have days where we don’t see or talk to another human being in person. I have hundreds of friends on social media, some I’ve never actually met. I prefer to text. If my phone rings, I assume it is an emergency. I drive myself if I must leave the house.

But why would I leave the house?

I can order any products I see advertised to live a fulfilled life. I can order my groceries online and  someone leaves a box outside my door. I don’t even have to get dressed. I have new neighbors who I haven’t met.

This is life? This is living?

Is it living to measure my worth based on how many ‘likes’ my latest post garners?

In a word, no. So we hold each others hands as an act of rebellion, opposing the culture that tells us we should worship at the altar of ourselves and our superior abilities. We hold each others’ hands as proclamation that we are, indeed, alive – especially if we have forgotten. Though the road can be long and difficult, it is nothing we have to travel alone.

Do you know what damage it does to a soul that is never touched by another human being? One of the most revolutionary barriers Jesus broke was to touch those who shouldn’t have been and never were touched. In fact, they were called ‘untouchables’ and they were cast out from the rest, regarded as less than human for some reason or another (blood, skin, sin, etc.). Jesus spoke with them, ate with them, and shockingly touched them. As if they were friends or children and not just a disease, history, or reputation. Of course, the healing was physical, superficial, but the true healing took place where the Pharisees could not see, in their hearts.

And that is absolutely worth a bit of uncomfortability.

.

Thank you so much Chad for sharing your time, talent and self with BnV.  Im pleased and honoured to share the news about all you are doing and pray only the best blessings…or the most inspiring …ever touch your life.

.

~Morgan~

The River of Time

.

Silence comes in Shadows and Rocky Pools

Where Light Reflects the Glimmering facets

Of Hope and Faith,

Courage Shimmering on the surface of the waters,

Even beneath the canopy of Overhanging fear;

Ever Shifting,

Ever Rushing onward

In the ‘plash of the River of Time.

Beleif

.

Belief
Teaches my heart that All is Possible,
All is Ready Standing, Waiting upon my own Acceptance,
My own Belief, my own Unfettering Faith
To Set Free the wheels of the universe
And Create my Heart’s Desire;
Yet in this dark and weary place,
Where fear crushes dreams
And doubt hangs hopes,
What is Remarkably Possible if often considered improbable,
And Faith sits down in the shadows, her hands tied.
The slippery slope of lost Hope
Dashes Charisma against the rocks and shakes Vigor to the core;
Compressing Life to only what is seen, felt, heard.
Lost are the Whispers,
Lost are the Potent Promises that Move Mountains,
Lost are the Smiles of Satisfaction and Purpose.
Still, even in this dark place, where Angels wait, muted by skepticism;
When all is clouded o’re and dim,
One Word shall Lift the Indomitable Spirit,
One Affirmation will Raise the Irrepressible Soul;
Shattering cynicism, Collapsing disbelief,
And Building Bridges to the Unimagined.

An Easter Prayer

Sweet Heavenly Father,
Holy Lord,
Almighty and Ever Living God,
Creator of our Every Breath,
and
Author of our Every Thought,
We Give Thanks to You with Joyful and Amazed Hearts
On this Most Special Day,
With Family and Friends by our sides
And
Remembered with Great Love,
We Praise You for the Miracle of the Resurrection,
For the Unfathomable Measure of Love
Shared with All of us
Through the Life of Jesus our Saviour,
Through His Passion and Death,
And
Through His Glorious Victory,
Blessings we can never fully Comprehend or Deserve,
Yet which we Receive Today On this Bright Easter,
With All the Love our Hearts, Minds and Spirits
Can Offer.
AMEN

Inner Peace

.

Gracious Heavenly Father
Quiet our thoughts so they may Center on You.
You who Knows every beat of our Hearts,
Every Breath we take.
Hush our chaos for Your Love’s Sake
And Speak in a voice Soft and Clear;
Holy Whisperings that drive away fear.

Spirit of Peace, Bless the Weary Heart,
The Sorrowful Traveler,
The Lost and Lonely Soul.
Generous Love, Reach down from on High
To Caress with Tenderness when fear tries to pervade.
Trusting Joy, return like a River of Loving Light
To Reign in Triumph in our Hearts.
Lord of Love, Fill us in Blessed Renewal
Giving us Strength to walk in Abundant Hope.

Blessed Spirit of Life and Breath,
Creator before the foundation of the world,
Master Artist of the Universal Mystery,
You are All in All in All.
Eternal Word of Life,
Giver of Wisdom and Unfathomable Peace,
Guide us to Understand Truth through Your Spirit of Compassion and Mercy
So we may Live each Breath with Love and Kindness,
With Harmony in our Hearts and Your Melody in our Voices;
So we may Share Your Love, Hope, Peace and Joy
With All we meet,
Giving Glory and Honour unto the Most High,
Blessed Spirit of Life and Breath.

Lord in Your Loving Mercy we Pray

Amen

.

Drops of Truth

.

Drops of Truth in the Enigmatic Sky,

Sheltering Wings of Heaven’s Soft Sigh,

Weightless Love Conquering All,

Gentlest Embrace when We Stumble and Fall,

Tenderest Whisper of Hovering Devotion,

Calming the Tide of the Thrashing Ocean,

Sweetest Reminder of Our Precious Worth,

Unshakable Love From Long Before Birth.

.

This short lyric poem is an affirmation of what I, as many, believe:  That Love Abides over us, Guiding, Protecting, Loving.  It is a Gentle reminder that we are not alone, we are connected to that which Gives Life and Breath.  I am not debating who or what this Abiding Love is.  Father, Creator, Universal Source, Spirit of Life; there are many names but only One Love.  May you never forget You Are Loved.

Be Not Afraid – #Inspirational #Poetry

Be Not Afraid

.

Though the jagged edge of

Fear and Doubt

Fill the Heart with Trepidation,

Though the wrenching Memory of

Past pains

Rush in to demoralize and devastate,

Though the innate Desire to Protect

Yourself, Your Heart,

Builds a wall that secludes and separates;

Be Not Afraid,

Stand Upon the Mountain

Of Your Hope,

Reach for the Glittering Sparkle

Of Possibility,

Embrace Your Spirit

By Filling Your Heart

With the Love for which it Longs,

With the Laughter it Seeks,

With the Keen Delight for which it Yearns,

If only for the briefest moment in Time,

For Moments are what Fill a Life,

Sparkling Gemstones of Precious Memory,

And Shadowy jet lignite of Challenges

Now Contrasting in Shimmers that make those

Diamonds of Joy and Contentment

Glimmer even more Brightly;

Be Not Afraid,

Sing into the Vast Expanse,

Shine Your Beautiful Light,

And Be at Peace with

You!

.

This one rather speaks for itself, but I found it this morning in the midst of my own hailstorm of the worlds ugliness.  I was perusing Facebook and came upon a post of two teens who had cut off a dogs ears and then posed for a picture with the poor suffering animal. WHY!!!!!!!! my Spirit screamed as my stomach twisted into knots and tears welled in my eyes.  What drives us to such horrible actions?

Darkness.  Evil.  Hatred.  Cruelty.  They exist in plenty and fill this world, everywhere we look.  So, I find it a Blessed reaffirmation that Light, Love and Hope also exists, that in such a terrible and anger filled moment, LOVE reached out to remind me of just this.  Be Not Afraid.

I will certainly try…

Return

.

I Walk in Starlight

I Dance in Moonbeams

I Sing with the Whispering Owl

I Wander with the Coursing Heavens

I Hold Your Mystery in my Heart

I Listen to the Song of the Wind

I Hope in the Mighty Sunrise

I Give of Myself Everyday

I Reach for the Grasping Hand

I Touch the Lonely Heart

I Cry with the Grieving Stranger

I Mourn the Loss of Life

I Remember Sweet Harmony

I Pray for Its Beauteous Return
