Today’s character Interview is by Fantasy author Tabitha Darling. Tabitha is the author of multiple works of fiction and nonfiction. (To be released ongoing) She is wife to a robot builder and mom to a toddler. By day, she is a barefoot farrier, horse trainer, and riding instructor. She lives in Texas, with her husband, toddler, three horses, three hens, three geese, and three doves.

In the book Trust (Children of Chiron Series Vol 1) Ieang (Eeng) is a main character caught up in a war between humans and his people the centaur. He struggles to save an infant centaur and in the process needs a human, Brenda to help with the baby. They begin to understand and respect each other over time.

History teaches that centaurs are aggressive, how do you feel about this? It bothers me. We are taught to respect the power the Gods give only to women. I have seen humans be good and mean.

What do you look like? I am a centaur. My body is horse, man and unicorn. My hair is brown, my skin is brown, my eyes are brown.

What do you like to wear? We do not need clothes like humans.

How do you keep your hooves worn down? We walk. If we can not, we use a hard stone to do it.

What is the horn on your head? It is what separates the people from the Gods and the animals. It reminds us of our origin, the unicorn.

What is telepathy like? I learned from my human wife that humans think in sounds. We do not, but we can. What you feel, see, touch, feelings, all is given, in telepathy. Not just sounds, all. It joins the people, into one. It is the gift from unicorn.

What do centaurs eat? We eat as you do, plant, meat. Why?

What do you think of humans? Your people are gifted by the Gods with great power and knowledge.

If someone wanted to learn the language and culture, your beliefs, would that be ok? Yes, I will help teach.

How do you feel about videos and photographs? I will not talk about this.

What do you think of horses? They are more intelligent than humans know. They should be respected.

If a human child wanted a ride, would that bug you? No, I would be happy to play with them.

How do you like to socialize? I enjoy watching my children, to sing with them after a meal. Or spending time with the men on a hunt.

What was your role in your family growing up? My role was to obey the elders, and my father, to respect the Gods and spirits. To listen and learn.

What were you most proud of as a kid? I was glad to become a man. It meant the Gods and spirits thought I was worthy. I try to be.

What did you find terribly embarrassing as a kid? I was humiliated for my dishonor once when I did not give an offering on a hunt. I learned to after the punishment. I had angered the spirits, I was wrong.

What was your first best friend like? We do not have one friend. All the men hunt and work together. That is our way.

What ‘group’ were you in during your high school years? We do not learn in one house, we learn with our fathers who raise us. The shaman may teach us, but usually it is our father. If one father and one child is a group, then that was my group.

What did you want to be when you grew up–and what did you end up becoming? I only hoped to be accepted by the God of life to the temple, to do well by our ancestors, the ones who came before. To not disgrace any of them. I passed my run, I am a man, adult. That is all I am.

What are your hobbies? I enjoy speaking with the God of tools, to ask the spirits to give their power to what I make so that a hunt goes well. If I honor them, the power is there, and the animals are happy to give us meat.

What music do you listen to? Brady, brother to my human wife says that humans enjoy music all the time, that the human Gods allow it. We do not, it speaks to the ancestors, the spirits and Gods. It is sacred.

What annoys you? I am angered if the people begin to disrespect the elders, the shaman, the spirits, ancestors or the Gods.

What makes you laugh? To watch my children.

Are you a dog or a cat person? I do not like to eat dog but I have, it seems to be a friendly spirit to humans. I do not know what cat is.

What season do you enjoy most? I look forward to the dry season when the hunting is good.

What makes you embarrassed as an adult? I have answered this before.

Do you drink alcohol? What is this drink? We have many drinks and some are sacred. We usually drink water.

What do you feel most passionately about? I hope that my people will live, have many children, if the Gods allow. And to continue living in the marriage house with my wife.

What trait do you find most admirable in others? To be an elder, a shaman, to speak with the Gods, ancestors and spirits. It is the best any can become until we join them in their home when we die.

Do you want a job that helps people or a job that makes money? Money, is how humans hunt, to bring food yes? If we live on Earth, I would like to learn in human school to get a job, yes. I always like to help! The people rely on each other to bring meat, to build a house. We do not live alone like humans.

Are you a leader or a follower? I am only a man, a hunter. I was not called to be a leader.

What scares you? To see the last of my people, no more children. That we so angered the Gods.

What are your long term goals? I have answered this before! To see my people live.

What are your short term goals? To hunt well.

What are your bad habits? Bad habits make the spirits angry.

What do you think happens after we die? If we please the Gods we live in their home by their fire and eat with them when the hunt is good.

If you were to come into money what would you do with it? Money is how humans get food, they do not hunt? If we have more than we need, I would give it to others who need more so that they have food.

Who was the love of your life? I love my human wife Brenda, she taught me love.

Arvansys 1

.

A very long time ago, before anybody had ever been born, there lived a creature very unlike you and me that roamed these lands alone. He was enormous, more than four times the height of man and three times as wide. He resembled a human, though he was not mortal.  His long black hair was unkempt; his eyes were gray, his skin pale, and his nails sharp. Through his hair protruded two curved horns and attached to his back was a pair of stunning silver wings of dragon-hide with small talons at the tips. He was both beautiful and terrifying to behold, and his name was Arvansys.

For the entirety of his being, Arvansys was free to explore anywhere on land or in the skies. He coexisted with the plants and animals harmoniously, but Arvansys knew something was missing. No matter what he did, he could not find complete contentment with the flora and fauna that surrounded him; they were suitable companions, but he wanted something… more. After a while, the animals, plants, and even the clouds in the sky began to notice Arvansys’s depression.

One spring morning, while the leaves and blades of grass were still covered with dew, Arvansys was walking through the forest when he came across a dead tree stump. It was old and hollow, but two branches remained on either side, leafless. He stared at the lifeless tree for a few moments, and suddenly, he had a thought! He knew what it was that he longed for. Hurriedly, Arvansys searched the area for leaves, twigs, and stones, piling the collection at the base of the tree. When he had collected a sufficient amount, he used the various pieces of nature to decorate the stump. Upon his completion, Arvansys stepped back to admire his handiwork: the remainder of a tree trunk had disappeared, and in its place stood a piece of art. He had used the twigs and rocks to liken the stump to another creature like himself, but as a female. Arvansys yearned for her to be real, to be able to share a friendship with her so deep that they would be together until the end of time. He even knew what her name would be, if she were real – Gwynnzeles.

dryad

Suddenly overpowered by his desire, Arvansys fell to the ground and sat in front of his would-be mate. He found a decently large stick on the ground near his feet, hollowed it, and carved it to create a musical instrument. In order that he might express his emotions and pining, Arvansys began to create beautiful yet melancholy music. These notes and feelings floated upward and eventually found their way to the stump of “Gwynnzeles”. The music spiraled around her when suddenly the tree stump was no longer lifeless.

Arvansys became aware of a new presence before him and looked up. There, standing in front of him, was a gorgeous creature with delicate horns on her head, long blonde hair, and a set of breathtaking, almost translucent periwinkle wings. Arvansys knew right away that this was her. Both he and his heart leaped for joy and he took her into his arms, spinning both of them around and up above the clouds. He was no longer alone, for Gwynnzeles was finally by his side. As they danced together in the skies, all of the earth and sky celebrated; even the clouds were so happy that they shed tears of bliss. Where these tears hit the ground, little flowers grew quickly and morphed into human beings – our ancestors.

When they had finally settled down, Arvansys and Gwynnzeles returned to the world and took up new responsibilities caring for all of nature and the skies, so that the new people with which they now shared the land could flourish.

In the Lime Light – #Fantasy #CharacterSpotlight with Cindy Tomamichel

Please allow me to introduce you to Fantasy writer Cindy Tomamichel and author of Druid’s Portal.

A portal closed for 2,000 years.

An ancient religion twisted by modern greed.

A love that crosses the centuries.

An ancient druid pendant shows archaeologist Janet visions of Roman soldier Trajan. The visions are of danger, death, and love – but are they a promise or a curse?

Her fiancé Daman hurts and abandons her before the wedding, her beloved museum is ransacked, and a robed man vanishes before her eyes. Haunted by visions of a time she knows long gone, Janet teeters on the edge of a breakdown.

In the shadow of Hadrian’s Wall and 2,000 years back in time, Janet’s past and present collide. Daman has vowed to drive the invaders from the shores of Britain, and march his barbarian hordes to Rome. Trajan swears vengeance against the man who threatens both his loves – Janet and the Empire.

Time is running out – for everyone.

Cindy, please preface your character interview for us 🙂

Today I introduce Branwen, a secondary character from my time travel action adventure romance trilogy Druid’s Portal. She appears at pivotal times throughout the series, as her town, Pons Aelius (now modern day Newcastle in the UK) is a nexus in time around the area of Hadrian’s Wall. She is a Celtic woman, running the local bath house, with six grown children. She knows both the main characters – Janet, the modern day archaeologist back in time to Roman Britain, and Trajan, the Roman soldier who will struggle between his duty to the Roman Empire and his love for Janet.

***

Branwen is bustling around the small kitchen, and brushes flour off her hands before smiling in welcome.

How do you feel about the Romans?

Well, it’s been a hundred years or more since they invaded and built that wall, so we are used to them – my two boys Brack and Quintus have joined the Roman army and they will be citizens of the Roman Empire in 25years, so that is a great thing. They also brought many new foods with them, they do love their food, the Romans. Apples, spices, herbs, olives, wine and dried fruits – although I can’t take that fishy sauce garum.

I know a lot of my Northern cousins still hate the Romans, but I have a business to run, and it looks like they are here to stay.

You rescue Janet and give her a job at the bath house. How is she settling in?

Well, she is pretty enough, the boys bet on how loud she will squeal when they pat her behind, and I think she enjoys the attention. I imagine she will tire of it, my goodness, I have seen enough nude men to last me a lifetime. She is a bit of a puzzle, some of the things she says.

What sort of things?

She has the fort commander Trajan Aurelius interested in her, but she pushes him away. She needs to learn life is short, and when you find a good man you need to grab him!

Sometimes she sounds like a learned teacher with stories from foreign places, although some simple day to day items seem to fascinate her. I saw her sketching soldier’s sandals the other day, as if anyone in their right mind is interested in smelly old sandals.

Trajan is interested in Janet? What is he like?

He is a good man, despite being a Roman to his sandals. My boys are always talking about him. He needs to find himself a woman and settle down instead of putting himself in danger and getting into fights. You can be too fond of duty, in my opinion, but it would take a strong woman to change Trajan’s mind.

Is that all the questions? I have a pie in the oven – Branwen sniffs – there, I have work to do, I can’t stay here gossiping all day. She bustles off, following the appetising aroma of baking.

.

Cindy Tomamichel is a writer of action adventure novels, some with a touch of romance. The heroines don’t wait to be rescued, and the heroes earn that title the hard way.

Her first book Druid’s Portal: The First Journey– time travel romance in Roman Britain near Hadrian’s Wall has been published with Soul Mate publishing. She also has a number of short stories and poems published in various anthologies.

Her next book, Druid’s Portal: The Second Journey is in progress. An action adventure time travel with a touch of romance set in Roman Britain. Keep up to date via links below.

#FridayFantasy – Creatures of Jyndari – Maaygras

A chill wind nipped across his face, stinging his cheeks and tousling the platinum-blond curls of his hair as the storm, congesting in the sky above, began to kindle its impending fury.  Arching his wings against the bluster, Mardan muttered to himself with exasperation and shook his head. ‘Predictable of her to go missing’, he mused tetchily as he passed the next set of barns housing sheep and their herding companions; large, domesticated felines nearly equal in size to the sheep they guarded, called Maaygras.  These powerful cats were as intelligent as they were temperamental and Mardan was careful to keep a respectful distance.  Gazing through the doorway into the darkened interior for only a moment, Mardan hissed under his breath a second time and turned aside, but a glitter of light deep in the shadows of the barn’s hayloft where none should have been caused him to stop and gaze inward once again.

Listening keenly, he strained for a sound other than the snoring of sheep and the occasional purr of Maaygras while he stared upwards, his sight limited, yet discerning enough to detect a reflection of firelight where only darkness should have been.  As the light of the bonfire streamed into the barn through the hayloft window, it was inadvertently refracted by the veil she was able to draw round herself; it’s sparkling giving Ilys away even in complete darkness.  Stepping inside the warm barn, Mardan shook the chill from his wings and rubbed his hands together briskly, lowering his intense stare as if he had not taken notice of her and for several moments he stood quietly; gazing nonchalantly at the animals before returning to the doorway to peer out at the hushed encampment.  Then, without preamble, he spoke.

“Sheep are certainly safer than nearly one hundred malefey.”  Silence answered his words, but he expected nothing else.  After a prolonged moment, he spoke to her again.

“I know you are there, Ilys.  I saw you up in the hayloft.”  Pausing to allow her a moment to consider her options, he smiled dimly at her stubborn silence.

“Even you cannot hide the reflection of light from your bending of it.   Come down and speak with me.”  His invitation was ignored, although one of the Maaygras got up from its place in a nearby corner and, glaring at him through half-closed jeweled eyes, slunk off into a quieter part of the barn.

An Excerpt from Dark Fey Breaking Into The Light, book three of the Dark Fey Trilogy

The story of Dark Fey is set in a fantasy realm of Jyndari, a world of beauty, magic, Light and Darkness. It is peopled by Feyfolk, winged beings the size of any human who are born with gifts; sometimes of telepathy or empathy and sometimes of magic and ethereal powers. Although it is an Epic YA Fantasy, the message of Dark Fey is based upon the horrifying true life events of the Lord’s Resistance Army and is relative to our own reality.  It relates how the Power of Hope, Acceptance and Forgiveness can change the world, if you take Positive Action to create Change through doing what is Right.

The only way to achieve Peace is to become Peace.

Coming towards them through the powdery snow was an immense deer, which stood easily six feet high at the shoulder.  He was harnessed with light leather tack to an elegantly designed cart constructed of wood, which was carved with intricate designs and fashioned with runners, instead of wheels, to negotiate the deep snow of Jyndari winters.

The massive Hasparii tossed his head exuberantly in the newly falling snow; displaying his breathtaking rack of exquisitely twisting antlers that stretched to a breadth of nearly four feet from tip to tip.  The two malefey who stood watching in awe-struck silence could not contain their smiles at his demonstration and, as he pranced towards them with a high-spirited gait, they stepped aside to make way for the extraordinary monarch of the forest with observable reverence.

Transparent

And all that Speaks of

Wondrous Surprise

Dance before my gaze of Wonder

Jubilant in your

Non-conformity

Preen Sweet Magic in Artful

Practice

Whisper of Superfluous

Possibility!

These Beauties are actually Sea Slugs, but such dramatic colours and shapes remind me far more of mythical beasts!

Beyond the borders of Imagination, where reality blends with myth, a realm of enchantment presides over the tempestuous seas of time. Anchored in the distant past; yet sailing the present tides, those who abide in this kingdom await the luckless, the vengeful; the courageous and unsuspecting, drenched in gilded phrases.

FFteas

In the darkness, I linger, alone.

Locked Inside, Timeless,

Unseen and Unheard, while the world goes along without me.

Once All the world sought me out,

Longing for the Treasures I can provide;

Now, I am but a Myth.

A Legend long forgotten, long Unspoken.

Upon the Mists of Time I Danced,

All-powerful;

Yet those same mists now enshroud me,

Ensnare me,

Entrap me,

And all my Powers shrink to a world the size of

This Lantern,

This Darkness,

In which I Linger,

Alone.

Gargoyle

Beneath the Silent Moonlight

Where Whispers Fall Unheard,

He waits in Mythic Silence

While Shadows Linger, Undeterred;

Watching in the Twilight

Where she walks in Sorrow’s Shade,

Haunted by the Memory

of Beguiling Mistakes she’s made;

Mute Testament to Tragedy,

Witness of Lament and Toil,

Unnoticed Secret Watcher,

Friendless, Faithful Gargoyle.
