The Kalis Experiments (Tides Book 1) Kindle Edition

by R.A. Fisher

Syrina is a Kalis: a master of disguise, assassin, and spy. Her kind has served the High Merchants’ Syndicate for a thousand generations.

She receives a surprising gift from her master, and she realizes something isn’t right. The High Merchants don’t do anything without a reason.

When things don’t add up in an otherwise normal investigation, she follows the trail to the steam-powered city of Fom. There, she learns of a machine that could end civilization a second time.

Will Syrina stave off disaster, or seek revenge?

.

My 5-Star Review:

An absorbing Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Steampunk/ mystery saga that makes me wish for a T.V. Series!

The Kalis Experiments, Book One Tides, has opened a brand-new world of Sci-Fi adventure.  The world building is immaculate, in-depth, and so original I found myself re-reading entire chapters just to fully appreciate all the subtle details and intricacies R.A Fisher has woven into his exceptional tale. The main character is equally unique, well-conceived, and thoughtfully introduced, allowing readers to identify with her despite her alien nature.

Thoroughly enjoyable and written with a likable prose style, I am eager to see where the author takes the story through the rest of the series.

.

Biography

Robert Fisher has lived in Hiroshima, Japan with his wife and five-year-old son since 2015, where he occasionally teaches English, writes, and pretends to learn Japanese. Before that he lived in Vancouver, Canada where he worked in the beer industry and mostly just cavorted about, getting into trouble and eating Thai food.

He placed fourth in The Vancouver Courier’s literary contest with his short story The Gift, which appeared in that paper on February 20, 2009. His science fiction novella The God Machine was published by Blue Cubicle Press in 2011 under the name Robert Fisher.

He has been trying to write stories since he was four years old

Sandra J. Jackson is an award-winning Canadian author living in rural Ontario with her family. Her published novels include Promised Soul and Playing in the Rain – Book 1 of the Escape Series. The second book of the series is awaiting publication while Sandra works on editing the final book. She holds a professional membership with the Canadian Author Association and is a member of Writer’s Ink.

Playing in the Rain

When the effects of a hypnosis inducing drug fade, April slowly begins a conscious awakening. Memories of her past are unclear and she has no recollection of her identity or her whereabouts.

As the days slip by, April realizes there is more to life than existing when she is introduced to an occupant who does just that—her sister. The more she learns about her environment the more she wants to escape.

Will April remember her past, her sister? Will she have the courage to leave?  And if she does, where will she go?

Experience through April’s eyes her struggle to remember and her determination to escape in this sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, suspense story.

.

Hi Sandra!  Its  great having you stop by for a quick chat.  Tell us about you.  What do you love most about Writing?

What I love most is that no matter what ideas I might have my characters are the ones who direct the story. They surprise me every time.

I love when they do that!  I like to tell their story, using 2nd person.  Do you have a preferred POV that you write from and why?

Both of my books are written in first person (though Promised Soul does have a couple of chapters written in third). I like the way first person draws readers into a story and makes them feel like they are a part of it.

First person is something I haven’t tried yet.  Maybe one day.  Makes me wonder, does it drive how your write….and Do your characters dictate what or how your write in any way?

Absolutely! I have a quote that I use on my business cards and a few other things. “Only my characters truly know what’s happening—I just hold the pen.”

I wrote that quote because this is how it is for me.

Oh thats so true…I never know where they will lead me. Im often just holding on for the ride!  Playing in the Rain sounds like a marvelous, page-turner!  Where can we find it?

Emily Renzi thinks she’s going crazy. After her parents move to a quiet village, she senses that something is off about the house they’re living in. Dreams of strange creatures invade her sleep, and mysterious shapes appear in the garden. Confiding in her older brother, Ru, they research the house’s background and find that a scientist disappeared there during World War II. Afterwards, sightings of strange creatures were whispered around the village. Could the creatures in Emily’s dreams and the ones rumored about be the same? And if so, what do they want from her? As she struggles to piece together the truth from the fiction, she finds out that beasts aren’t always monsters – humans, however, are a different matter.

.

Kathryn Rossati is an autistic author and poet who loves weaving tales of fantasy, sometimes with sci-fi or paranormal twists. Her stories tend to have themes of social acceptance and equality, without being preachy.   Kathryn has four middle grade books published under the name Kathryn Wells with Creativia, along with a debut poetry collection, and her latest book, The Origin Stone, which was recently published in March from Nuff Said Publishing.

Kathryn, what do you love most about Writing? Living a life/lives so very different to my own. It’s like being an actor, except without the CGI to be added after your scene’s been filmed. Every story has a new cast that I have to get to know, and the world can be close to my own or the complete opposite. Nothing is impossible, and exploring that is invigorating. True, there are times when trying to get the words down on paper is like pulling teeth, but the end result is worth it. I also find it incredibly therapeutic, as it eases my depression and provides me with a sense of achievement and self-worth.

Can you sum up your life story in ten words or less? Dungaree-loving Mother of Parrots obsessed with the fantastical.

Do you have a Mantra- a Quote you try to live by? Yep, as a woman on the autistic spectrum, I can have very strong interests. However, as being an author has always been my dream, my mantra is, ‘Just Write’. It refocuses me on what I truly find important so I can keep going (it’s also tattooed on my leg just in case I forget). Anyone can write, but being an author takes true commitment and passion.

.

I love that!  Thank you so much Kathryn for taking a few moments of your time to share your story…and your story, with BnV 🙂

Arboretum Book One of Emissary of the Oppressed Trilogy by Ian Miller

.

Timothy Martin is a respected lecturer in Astronomy who has spent most of his life trying to put behind him the trauma of a childhood dominated by ‘visions’. But the visions have returned, more real than ever. Not only does see other places, but he is now able to step into them. When he becomes fixated on the star Delta Crucis in the Southern Cross constellation, he sees a vision of a world orbiting it and impulsively takes a step ̶ two hundred and forty-five light years into space. He did not expect to survive. Nor did he expect to land in the midst of an alien city. And he certainly did not expect to threaten the well-being of another world, one that he finds disturbingly ̶ at peace. At stake is not only his own destiny, but that of an entire world.

A Brief excerpt from the book

Timothy made his way with confident ease, despite the precarious drop. Behind him came Star Mist and behind her, Beauty Wonder. The rest were in front. Sun Keep, the Knower had taken the lead that afternoon, followed by his Sage friend, Morning Laughter. The two were inseparable. Perhaps they were brothers; they looked enough alike, Timothy thought. Destiny Unsought followed next, with Joy Spring and Night Light just in front of Timothy. The path was too dangerous to consider anything but walking single file.

‘Aes manal pan,’ shouted Night Light, as a section of the narrow path under him plummeted into the depths below.

Timothy instinctively reached out and grabbed onto the Discerner’s arm, striving to keep him upright in this dangerous section of the climb. In reaching out so carelessly, he lost his own balance and slid off the crumbling path behind Night Light.

Now it was the Discerner’s turn to save his would-be rescuer. Timothy dangled precariously over the ledge. Loose rocks and stones continued to dislodge under his weight. Scrambling frantically, not wanting to look down into the cavernous ravine, he managed to gain a firmer footing and edged his way back up to the path. Night Light’s firm grip on Timothy’s forearm brought him to his feet as the two men stood face to face, both breathing hard.

Review of Aboretum by Morton Benning, author of Playing God – February 13, 2018:   Arboretum is a highly engaging read which challenges us to consider the possibility that the science we currently know could look very different from the perspective of one who understands it more fully. As Arthur C. Clarke says, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” What we now perceive as magic may just be science beyond what we currently understand.

5 interesting facts about psychological dystopian thriller The Phoenix Project by D.M. Cain

    • Most of The Phoenix Project was written by hand, whilst listening to music. I have shelves full of handwritten notebooks containing the first draft of The Phoenix Project. I always listen to epic, instrumental music when writing such as Two Steps from Hell and Immediate Music.
  • The protagonist of The Phoenix Project, Raven Kennedy, is on a glorified death row within Salverford prison for the terrible crime he committed. In the original idea he was innocent and had been framed and that’s why he was in prison. (As soon as I began writing it, I realised it worked better if he was actually guilty!)
  • The horrifying ‘dark room’ in The Phoenix Project (a pitch-black sensory deprivation cell) was inspired by a visit to the Terror Haza in Budapest—a museum dedicated to the fascistic and communistic regimes that operated from the building. In the cellar of the Terror Haza are the old cells used to imprison and torture inmates. For research purposes, I crawled inside a very low cell and shut the door, casting myself into total darkness. It was terrifying and claustrophobic, and I only lasted five minutes in there, but it gave me an idea of what it would be like to be in one of those cells.

  • Raven Kennedy from The Phoenix Project actually started life as the same character as Vincent Wilder from A Chronicle of Chaos (even though Raven is a good guy and Vincent is the mega-villain of my Light and Shadow Chronicles series!). The first book I started to write had a character called Vincent (he wasn’t quite the same character as his later incarnation) and I developed his character in two ways – drawing upon his negative traits to create the later Vincent, and his redeeming characteristics to create Raven.
  • There is a scene in the book where Raven and a few other characters take part in a high-pressure televised interview. In order to prepare for this and make it seem natural, my husband and I acted it out and recorded the interview! I played Raven and my husband played the other characters, and I then played the tape (yes, tape!) back and used it to write the scene. I still have that tape in my collection of books etc!

The book is available to buy from Amazon:

D.M. Cain Biography

D.M. Cain is a dystopian and fantasy author working for Creativia Publishing. The Light and Shadow Chronicles series features a range of books which can be read in any order. The series instalments to date include A Chronicle of Chaos and The Shield of Soren. D.M. Cain is working on the next novel in the Light and Shadow Chronicles series, The Sins of Silas, as well as two complementary novellas entitled Genesis of Light and Origin of Shadow.

Cain has released one stand-alone novel: The Phoenix Project, a psychological thriller set in a dystopian future. The Phoenix Project was the winner of the 2016 Kindle Book Review Best Sci-Fi novel Award.

D.M. Cain is also a member of the International Thriller Writers and one of the creators and administrators of the online author group #Awethors. Her short story The End was published in Awethology Dark: an anthology by the #Awethors.

Cain lives in Leicestershire, UK with her husband and two young children, and spends her time reading, writing, reviewing and indulging in geek culture (Marvel, GoT, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Final Fantasy).

Whispers of secrets laugh boldly, yet are jealously guarded; staring like harbingers from her mechanized gaze.

Grace fallen upon unforgiving innocence betrays a wealth of calamity sitting in melancholic glee upon her shoulders.

Childhood sings from the devious shadows; hope smiling as she silently watches clockwork unraveling Gothic nursery rhymes.

I confess, I took a cue from Richard Ankers in writing this 50 Word Story.  I’ve enjoyed his for some time now and never thought I could condense my verbosity into so few words, but it was a fun challenge and you will probably see more.  Thank You Richard!

A Wonderful Introduction to a very unique, exceptionally exciting tale that I highly recommend. I’ve enjoyed Book One and Two myself and am chomping at the bit for the finale 🙂

Sue Vincent's Daily Echo

I’m very grateful to the wonderful Sue Vincent for allowing me space on her site to introduce my new book. But not just yet. What! Is he mad?

Well, some might say yes and others might agree with them. However, instead of bombarding people with book links, I wanted to explain why. Why The Eternals and the three books the idea spawned?

Time

Time is such a tiny word to explain such a pivotal force. How important is time to us as those who dwell in it? I can only speak for myself when I say time is precious. But would time be more or less important to those who have all eternity to live? It’s probably fair to say less. What about if after aeons of time, and enjoying every minute of it, someone said your time’s up? Hmm, what then?

Those who are neither human nor vampire, those…

In The Lime Light – D.B. Graves / Five Canyon Publishing

DB Graves2

I am Happy to Introduce you to a fellow Writer and Blogger who I recently met via Twitter, but who also has a WordPress Blog: D.B Graves. He is a resident of New Mexico, although he grew up in that Toddlin’ town, Chicago. After 20 yrs as a government worker in Chicago area, DB decided to flex his literary wings, so to speak, and broke into writing through fiction and children’s books, as well as the fairly new WordPress blog https://fivecanyonpublishing.wordpress.com. Author of his first book: “An Unexpected Sojourn”, which he discusses below, he is already penning a 2nd and, like so many of us, is learning all about the wonderful and, sometimes, daunting world of Indie Authors. So, I invited him to stop by and share a bit about himself with all of us. I hope you enjoy and, even more, that you pop by and say Hello to him to see what he’s up to 😉

Ready? Ok Great…here we go!

Tell us about your Blog.

I started my blog when I was working on the 2nd draft of my novel “An Unexpected Sojourn”. It basically allows me to relay updates on my writing, but also allows me to step back from the work and just be sociable. I am new to the blogging world but I enjoy it. Lately I have been blogging less than I’d like due to other priorities, some of which involve marketing my book.

What Inspires and stirs your creativity?

I would have to say that the beautiful place I now call home has a lot to do with it. These surroundings are unlike anything I was exposed to back in Chicago for the first 55 years of my life. Not a day goes by without some wildlife strolling around the homestead. I love it! The night sky up in the mountains is spectacular too.

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/posts?

I guess the main thing that I’d like to share is that I am a good-natured person who just happens to write for a living. I would guess that readers would want to know a little more about the authors of the books that they choose to read, and what makes them tick. Hopefully they will gain insight to who I am as a person and relate to me on some level.

What are your Dreams for the Future in regards to your Blog and your work?

I would love for my blog to become more than just a monologue, and to create some give and take through the comments section. I also intend to showcase more of my humor in upcoming blogs and I hope the readers enjoy that as well.

DB Graves

Tell us About Your Book(s):

My 1st novel is a sci-fi, fantasy, thriller work of fiction entitled “An Unexpected Sojourn” and it revolves around a secret society that is discovered by a man one day during a solo round of golf via a portal into a strange new world. This new world brings him danger, excitement and intrigue. The book is not for the squeamish as there is some pretty graphic sex and violence. Definitely not for the kiddies.
I am currently working on my 2nd book, which as of now remains untitled and is a children’s book. It is based on true events that were related to me regarding a wild horse that lives in the mountains of New Mexico. There are some good lessons that younger children can take from this story, and I hope to have it submitted to some publishers by the end of October.

What genre do you prefer to write or are you truly eclectic?

I can adapt to the story and enjoy the process regardless of genre. The act of writing, especially the 1st draft, is what I love to do. I can’t think of a better career than writing.

Do you painstakingly plot out your story; are you a discovery writer or a bit of both? Why?

I am pretty thorough as I write, I need to be even more dedicated if I want to get my books where I want them to be. I am learning that I can’t do it all alone, and I plan on utilizing specialists to help me make the best product that I can. I use outlines, notes, chapter summaries prior to writing the chapters on note cards, and more drafts than I care to admit.

Share an insight or secret about your book(s).

In my first novel, now on sale at Kindle and Barnes & Noble, there are many actual settings. The book is not entirely fiction in regards to locales. Many of those places discussed in the book have actual landmarks that are attributed to the story. The reader can decide what is and is not fiction. I’ll never tell 😉

Who is your favourite/least favourite character & why?

I would have to say that Jared Cantu is my favorite character in “An Unexpected Sojourn” as he has some Morgan Freeman-like qualities. My least favorite character in that book would be Carolyn Swift. She is a true meanie, and can be quite cruel with a pistol in her hand. Just sayin’

What do you feel is your best advice to share with other aspiring authors?
Enjoy your first draft!

Now, Share a Little About YOU:

I am a 56 year old man who became a New Mexico resident about one year ago. It is so beautiful here in the southern mountains that I fully believe it is the best kept secret in America. I have traveled to all parts of this country and there is no place where I’d rather live. It is easy to see why writers and artists make their homes here. I had a career in government for 20 years and this change to a more self-managed career is a godsend. Becoming D.B. Graves has been a real pleasure.

Describe yourself in Five Words.

Loyal, dedicated, light-hearted, determined, hopeful. Technically ‘light-hearted’ is two words but I used a hyphen dammit! 🙂

If you could meet one person from the past, who might it be and why?

My father. He died when I was nine years old and we were best buddies.

When you are not writing/taking pictures, what is your favourite pastime?

I love to travel and explore. Taking a trip on the train is one of my favorite things to do. I also like to travel locally and visit Sierra Blanca. Playing golf isn’t so bad either.

Describe Your Perfect Day . What makes it Perfect and Why?

A day that involves lots of good coffee and good company. I’m easy to please! 

What makes Life Worth Living?

Can I answer this question for everybody or just myself? Let’s see, I think it all comes down to happiness with who you have become. If you are satisfied with who you see in the mirror everyday, than I believe you have lived a good life and deserve the best that life can provide. It has also helped me to have a great woman fix all that I have screwed up.

Thank you Cynthia for allowing me to be a part of your blog. It’s been fun for me and I hope your readers gained a little insight into what type of person I am.

And Thank YOU DB for sharing about yourself and your writing 🙂 In The Lime Light is my way of Sharing The Love and, hopefully, opening a few windows for other bloggers and writers, where we can support and encourage each other. Together, we make the world of Indie Authorship a better place!

fail-buzzer

Caption me curious, but I do not understand the allure.

I recently went to see a movie at the theatre knowing full well that it was rated R. Willy Nilly, I went in anyway, but when the opportunity to see Vin Diesel on the big screen presents itself, I, for one, tend to step up, hand over my hard earned tenner and proceed to the top row of seats. After all, I liked the first two installments of the Riddick series, for some peculiar reason (although with the rippling muscles and that deep baritone voice, that reason isn’t really all that peculiar). Sci-Fi action hero flick? Sure. Unrealistic, even for Sci-Fi? Yes sir! Entertaining? Potentially. Except for one teensy-tiny little problem.

Ok, maybe not quite teensy-tiny. (mind the gutter!)

Being a Riddick flick, (no rhyme intended) I anticipated the odd F-bomb and, not being a prude, I didn’t honestly mind. After all, it’s Riddick, right? Blatant, over-testosterone driven hero with delusions of grandeur? Yeah, probably, but again, this was all anticipated. Still, after a dozen or so uses of this flagrantly over-utilized expression by every character in the movie except the alien dog, it got old. And after the second and third dozen exploitations of said F-bomb, I felt like I was in the middle of strafing gunfire (or the high school lunchroom), rather than sitting in a theater presumably enjoying a movie.

Seriously?

Now, before I go any farther, please understand; I am by no means suggesting that this word cannot and should not be used, for any purpose. It’s a truly nasty word, I’m sure you will agree, but let’s face fact, sometimes no other word will quite do. Still, I’m reasonably intelligent and have a functioning imagination. Is this really the only word known to these writers? Honestly, with all the colourful, expressive, imaginative possibilities, am I to believe that this one word, and its equally unimpressive variations, tops the list for useful methods to effectively portray the “badies” in film, on the page and in art? Even in this post I find myself coming up with, at least, slightly interesting or unique euphemisms, lest I fall into enemy territory, so I ask again: Seriously?

Perhaps I’m a bit old-fashioned, somewhat out of date, more Shakespearian of thought and Dickensian of nature than my counterparts in the here and now, but I simply don’t feel the need. Perhaps my vocabulary (if I manage to spell the word correctly!) is more expansive than most or perhaps I’m simply a bit of a word-snob. (very possibly, in point of fact), but if truth be told, I often wish someone would have handed out a Thesaurus before film editing happened.

Ok, before this turns into a rant (too late!): my point. Nope, haven’t got one really. Maybe this is a rant. Unusual for me? Absolutely! But perchance you might agree. In any event, as I perused the offerings today on Facebook and even the WordPress Reader, I was shocked by how many times the image of and/or the word itself (and any variation thereof) accosted me, and before I grabbed my Kevlar and ran for cover, I had to vent, just a wee bit.
