Misericorde (This means Mercy in French)

Book One of The Mercy Series

It is the year 2446. The first three Horsemen of Revelation’s Apocalypse have ridden. The first Horsemen, Pestilence, War and Famine, have shifted world-wide cultures and governments from technologically advanced civilizations to dictatorships that are ruled with an iron-fist. Social structures have returned to what they were during the Middle Ages and commoners have very few rights.​Liberty is a distant memory.

Before the final Horseman, Death, is released to ride, the Archangel of Mercy makes a bold plea. Tzadkiel cannot believe that mankind has forgotten what it means to be merciful. He asks to be allowed to search for even just one human who remembers. 100 years are granted, but at the end of that time the Archangel will be required to release the final Horseman. Releasing Death will conflict with everything the Archangel represents and be the hardest thing he has ever done, but he must agree.​The Horseman must ride.

Tzadkiel takes human form and comes to earth. He finds that humanity is ruled by greed, hatred and fear.​Compassion and kindness are considered a detriment, but he does not give up hope. After 96 years his long search leads him to New France where he encounters Levesque, a cynical military captain who hates the world he lives in.​He blames God and any who serve Him for the calamities the world has suffered. When Levesque learns who Tzadkiel is, he takes revenge by imprisoning him and subjecting him to torture that would kill a human.

Tzadkiel, however, is not fully human. His life-force comes from the energy of the sun and can regenerate his body in hours. It is not entirely a blessing. After suffering Levesque’s torture for nearly a year, a young servant named Lourdes finds him. Through an act of selfless mercy she reveals her true nature and Tzadkiel knows she is the one he seeks, but somehow they must escape Levesque and the ruthless dictatorship he serves.

Time is running out.​He has waited nearly 100 years, but the Horseman Death is growing impatient. He wants to ride. Tzadkiel has located the priceless treasure he sacrificed so much to find, but now he must find some way of protecting her from the calamity the Final Horseman has unleashed.

How do you feel your writing style differs from your previous work? What considerations should readers have while reading?​
While Dark Fey was very much a Young Adult Fantasy, The Mercy Series has taken a slightly darker turn, landing somewhere between a PG-13 and an R-rating.​ I veered away from the poetic writing style I used in Dark Fey, making this series more conversational in its tone with darker, moderately graphic content.​ ​ It tells the story of a harsh new reality that exists on Earth with characters that are equally harsh.​​

What inspired you to go in this direction as an author?
I began this tale with the intent of writing a multi-dimensional story.​I hoped to share the story through the perspectives of several characters, rather than just one, and to provide the backstory not so much through expository prefaces or chapters, but as the plot progressed.​I sought to challenge myself to create something dark that could still be tender and emotive, with which readers could connect on many levels.​ ​

Does this book have a hidden message?​
It isn’t really all that well hidden.​ The story speaks about the courage to be kind in the face of cruelty.​To be compassionate without motive.​To show thankfulness through kindness and appreciate blessings through generosity.

Eric Schumacher is an American historical novelist who currently resides in Santa Barbara, California, with his wife and two children. He was born and raised in Los Angeles and attended college at the University of San Diego.

Eric, What do you love most about Writing?

What I love most about writing is disappearing into my imagination. I will start writing and hours can pass in what feels like minutes. Nothing else I do has that same affect on me.

Do your characters dictate what or how your write in any way?

Absolutely. My characters often throw a monkey wrench into my writing. I’ll be in the midst of writing dialogue or an action scene and suddenly my characters will do something unexpected. I pursue that new angle or direction because it usually feels appropriate for that character. The challenge, though, is that it can take the story in a new direction that may veer too far from historical facts, so I’ve learned to be cautious. Still, it is always a nice surprise when my characters come alive like that.

What’s exciting you about your next project?

A few things have really got me jazzed. While I’m sticking with Viking historical fiction, I am venturing into a new story with all new historical and fictitious characters. Developing those characters has been a ton of fun. I am also experimenting with a different POV, which is daunting and exciting all at once. It’ll be a few more months, but I can’t wait to share the project with the world!

A Friend and fellow Author recently invited me to do a character interview with one of my characters from Dark Fey and after much consideration, I decided it should be Veryth. Although he is a supporting character in the trilogy, his contributions are vital to the story and, indeed, the Fey with whom he interacts. His influence is gentle, yet powerful and, although he would never step forward of his own volition, being entirely good-natured and humble of spirit, I couldn’t resist giving him some much deserved attention. I hope you may enjoy discovering more about him and do please feel free to share what you think and if you have any additional questions about/for him.

Hello Veryth, Thank You for taking time out of your busy schedule at the Temple to speak with us and tell us about yourself. I am honoured.

What are you passionate about? – I am a Healer whose focus is Counseling. I follow a creed of Guide Gently, Lead Quietly, Extol Empoweringly, which allows me to help others help themselves. This is the deepest aspiration of my spirit and fulfills my purpose.

In most times, what would someone find you doing? I reside at the Temple so I may be close to the Healing Wards at all times. If any fey is in need, I am available to give assistance, offer support, suggest guidance or simply to listen. This is what I love doing and you rarely find me amidst any other activity, although I do enjoy reading and quiet walks, as they allow me to refocus my energy and settle my mind.

Please tell us, who are you really. What do you look like, where/when are you from, what would you say is your biggest strength, biggest weakness? I am a Fey of the Light who is old enough to have been unified to my beloved, who bore us a beautiful daughter; young enough to still connect with the youth of the village and vibrant enough to play an active role in our community. I am of an average height for a malefey at 5’10” with a healthful physique, dark blond hair, deep green eyes (from which my name was inspired), and typical, broad, white-feathered wings. My beloved insisted I am handsome as well as kind of spirit and wise beyond my years, but my humility normally does not permit me to boast such things. I was born and raised in the village Hwyndarin, where I am happy to make my home among the Fey I care about so deeply.

My strongest skill is an ability to remain calm even in the most intense situations, which I am able to share with others through my gift of Empathic Transference, which is the ability to share my emotions with others. This same gift, however, also presents the most challenges. It has taken most of my life to hone this gift and learn how to govern it, because, as you might imagine, such a skill could unintentionally overwhelm another or be utilized with cruel or unkind intent.

What is the most important thing to you? Helping others. It is what my essence drives me to do and what gives me a sense of accomplishment and purpose.

What irks you the most? I have a reasonably even temperament; not much irks or irritates me, however, I would be untruthful if I said the heartless cruelty of the Reviled and their unthinkable need to inflict harm does not, at times, make me wish I had more of a warrior nature.

What delights you the most? Seeing positive change, whether in the life of an individual whom I or another Healer may have aided or through the actions of a group, such as the Liberators, led by the Fierce One, Gairynzvl.

What is one thing that you want us to know about you? Though I do not often speak of such a heart-rending loss, the reason I chose to dedicate my life to helping others was inspired, in no small part, by the help I received (from Healers and Counselors) after the Reviled stole both my beloved and our only child from me. It took much time to recover from such an unspeakable injury, not only to my heart but also my spirit, but I learned much through the loss and grief, and the challenges I faced to try to set my life to some useful purpose. I cannot help, now, believing that the darkness, which steals into all of our lives at some point or another, is there to challenge us to become more than we are at that moment. It is an opportunity to make a change, a positive change, that can and often will not only effect our own life, but the lives of those around us. At least, in my case, this is true.

Where can we find you? I am usually to be found in the precincts of the Temple and play an active, although gentle, role in the entire Dark Fey Trilogy.

Yes, its that time of year again.  What time, you ask? Holiday time, or vacation time, depending on which continent you are sitting.  I know, I know, I’ve only just managed to make it back full time, as it were, and now Im planning to be off again.  But in my defense, this holiday has been planned for some while and, well, Colorado Beckons, so…off I go again.   Be assured, however, I have made plans to take good care of you while I am away.  (well, at least, I hope so!)

While I am off hiking the Colorado Rockies, Segwaying around the Garden of the Gods, and Ziplining across canyons (YIKES!), I have arranged to share a variety of books and authors, characters and far-away realms for your reading pleasure.  Oh, come now, we all need a break, now and again, from poetry; even we poets! So for the next week or two (thats all, I promise!) BooknVolume shall share just that, Volumes of Books!

I am Happy to Introduce you to a fellow Writer and Blogger who I recently met via Twitter, but who also has a WordPress Blog: D.B Graves. He is a resident of New Mexico, although he grew up in that Toddlin’ town, Chicago. After 20 yrs as a government worker in Chicago area, DB decided to flex his literary wings, so to speak, and broke into writing through fiction and children’s books, as well as the fairly new WordPress blog https://fivecanyonpublishing.wordpress.com. Author of his first book: “An Unexpected Sojourn”, which he discusses below, he is already penning a 2nd and, like so many of us, is learning all about the wonderful and, sometimes, daunting world of Indie Authors. Tell us about your Blog.

I started my blog when I was working on the 2nd draft of my novel “An Unexpected Sojourn”. It basically allows me to relay updates on my writing, but also allows me to step back from the work and just be sociable. I am new to the blogging world but I enjoy it. Lately I have been blogging less than I’d like due to other priorities, some of which involve marketing my book.

What Inspires and stirs your creativity?

I would have to say that the beautiful place I now call home has a lot to do with it. These surroundings are unlike anything I was exposed to back in Chicago for the first 55 years of my life. Not a day goes by without some wildlife strolling around the homestead. I love it! The night sky up in the mountains is spectacular too.

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/posts?

I guess the main thing that I’d like to share is that I am a good-natured person who just happens to write for a living. I would guess that readers would want to know a little more about the authors of the books that they choose to read, and what makes them tick. Hopefully they will gain insight to who I am as a person and relate to me on some level.

What are your Dreams for the Future in regards to your Blog and your work?

I would love for my blog to become more than just a monologue, and to create some give and take through the comments section. I also intend to showcase more of my humor in upcoming blogs and I hope the readers enjoy that as well.

Tell us About Your Book(s):

My 1st novel is a sci-fi, fantasy, thriller work of fiction entitled “An Unexpected Sojourn” and it revolves around a secret society that is discovered by a man one day during a solo round of golf via a portal into a strange new world. This new world brings him danger, excitement and intrigue. The book is not for the squeamish as there is some pretty graphic sex and violence. Definitely not for the kiddies.
I am currently working on my 2nd book, which as of now remains untitled and is a children’s book. It is based on true events that were related to me regarding a wild horse that lives in the mountains of New Mexico. There are some good lessons that younger children can take from this story, and I hope to have it submitted to some publishers by the end of October.

What genre do you prefer to write or are you truly eclectic?

I can adapt to the story and enjoy the process regardless of genre. The act of writing, especially the 1st draft, is what I love to do. I can’t think of a better career than writing.

Do you painstakingly plot out your story; are you a discovery writer or a bit of both? Why?

I am pretty thorough as I write, I need to be even more dedicated if I want to get my books where I want them to be. I am learning that I can’t do it all alone, and I plan on utilizing specialists to help me make the best product that I can. I use outlines, notes, chapter summaries prior to writing the chapters on note cards, and more drafts than I care to admit.

Share an insight or secret about your book(s).

In my first novel, now on sale at Kindle and Barnes & Noble, there are many actual settings. The book is not entirely fiction in regards to locales. Many of those places discussed in the book have actual landmarks that are attributed to the story. The reader can decide what is and is not fiction. I’ll never tell 😉

Who is your favourite/least favourite character & why?

I would have to say that Jared Cantu is my favorite character in “An Unexpected Sojourn” as he has some Morgan Freeman-like qualities. My least favorite character in that book would be Carolyn Swift. She is a true meanie, and can be quite cruel with a pistol in her hand. Just sayin’

What do you feel is your best advice to share with other aspiring authors?
Enjoy your first draft!

I am a 56 year old man who became a New Mexico resident about one year ago. It is so beautiful here in the southern mountains that I fully believe it is the best kept secret in America. I have traveled to all parts of this country and there is no place where I’d rather live. It is easy to see why writers and artists make their homes here. I had a career in government for 20 years and this change to a more self-managed career is a godsend. Becoming D.B. Graves has been a real pleasure.

Describe yourself in Five Words.

Loyal, dedicated, light-hearted, determined, hopeful. Technically ‘light-hearted’ is two words but I used a hyphen dammit! 🙂

If you could meet one person from the past, who might it be and why?

My father. He died when I was nine years old and we were best buddies.

When you are not writing/taking pictures, what is your favourite pastime?

I love to travel and explore. Taking a trip on the train is one of my favorite things to do. I also like to travel locally and visit Sierra Blanca. Playing golf isn’t so bad either.

Describe Your Perfect Day . What makes it Perfect and Why?

A day that involves lots of good coffee and good company. I’m easy to please! 

What makes Life Worth Living?

Can I answer this question for everybody or just myself? Let’s see, I think it all comes down to happiness with who you have become. If you are satisfied with who you see in the mirror everyday, than I believe you have lived a good life and deserve the best that life can provide. It has also helped me to have a great woman fix all that I have screwed up.

Sleep eluded her. She tossed and turned in her bed, then got up to wander the dimly lighted cottage restlessly; then returned to her bed to try to rest once again to no avail. The clock in the parlor chimed one, then two, then three before her eyes grew heavy and her mind stopped spinning and it was only when she curled up on her side and snuggled into the downy softness of her pillow that she heard a sound. The sound made her eyes snap open, then she sat up in bed and gazed round her uncertainly. Had she dreamt it now as she believed she had dreamt it earlier, or had she heard the softest whisper of her name?
“Ayla.” Unmistakably, her name was whispered once again and she jumped out of her bed and twisted about, searching for the source of the whisper.

“What! What do you want!” She insisted to the cool night breeze, but only silence answered her. Frustrated and exhausted, she growled in exasperation and stalked to the window, shouting out into the darkness without the slightest concern of who might hear her.

“I know you are there. Simply because you hide, does not mean I cannot sense you! Stop this at once! Show yourself or be gone; I grow weary of this game!” An owl hooted sharply in surprise at her outcry and fluttered away from the chimney of her cottage. The night was growing colder and the breeze uncomfortable. Spitefully, Ayla muttered under her breath and snapped the shutters closed, snickering that if he did not wish to show himself, she would simply shut him out. She repeated this action all round the house until every window stood closed and she felt more secure in her protection. Nodding in satisfaction with her actions, she traced her steps back towards her bed, yet even as she paused to slip beneath the warming blankets, once again, she heard her name in the form of a soft, drawn out, whisper.

“Ayla.” She froze. It was impossible that she could hear him now, whispering to her from the forest. Where, then, was he? She strained every sense of perception in an attempt to locate him, but besides the familiar awareness of his presence, she could not pinpoint a specific location where he might be hiding in the shadows. Without thinking, she answered his call in her mind through thought alone with a silent, yet insistent, ‘what! what!’ and to her utter disbelief she received an instantaneous reply.

“You hear me.” His voice was soft in her mind, yet clear as if he were standing beside her, whispering in her ear. She started back in surprise and spun around, fully expecting to see him there next to her, but she could only see the dimness of the room around her and the flickering lamp glowing softly in the corner.

“What do you want?” She spoke aloud, not fully aware of what was happening. Silence. She repeated herself more loudly, but again received no reply. Standing perfectly still in the middle of her room, she reasoned out the dilemma, then, cautiously, she thought the question to herself as clearly as she could manage, struggling to keep her own sense of skepticism from clouding her mind. She waited, then shook her head at her own foolishness when emptiness and silence was her only response. Grasping at the corner of her blankets, she moved to climb into her bed, so weary she felt dizzy and unfocused, yet she never lay down and she never found sleep.

The answer that filled her mind utterly prevented any phantom of sleep.

The answer that filled her mind was indisputable and terrifying.

The answer that filled her mind was inescapable.

“You.”

First Shipment

I would very much like to say THANK YOU EVER SO to everyone who helped me make this moment possible. So many of you Encouraged, Inspired, and Supported me as a new blogger and when I was posting “Dark Fey The Reviled” onto the blog in weekly posts. So many of you Shared insights, Freely gave tips and suggestions, and prompted me into action when I stood uncertain and you may not realize the Impact those actions have had on my life, but this moment, this Over-the-Top, I’m-on-Cloud-TEN, Indescribable moment is due in part to YOU.

Thank You may sound pat. Thank You Ever So, though it has become rather my thing to say, may not sound much more heartfelt (after having said it, literally, hundreds of times), but at this moment, although words are my best friends, I am rather at a loss and these few words are all I can think to say.

First Set

Having ordered 25 copies to share and sign for those who are interested (and having wondered HOW I would ever sell all 25!) I sit here (at my laptop) in amazement and inexpressible joy. I’ve only just opened the box, taken the books out, placed them neatly so I can snap a few pictures, posted an announcement or two and BEHOLD! Blessing of All Blessings!! Joy of Greatest Joy! For as long as I can remember, whenever anyone asked me what my Dreams are I have always answered two things: I should like to have my books published/ be a published author, and I should like to go to England.

Nondescript? Perhaps, but My Dreams, nevertheless. This is what I strive for and towards. This is what makes my Heart sing and my Spirit soar with the delight of possibility. Yet, until very recently, Dreams are all they truly seemed to be; those ever inspiring, but not quite attainable sort that keep us wistfully looking towards tomorrow while we plunge into the reality of our here and now.

Today, however, everything changed. Changed so that, having changed, it shall never change back to what it was before it changed. A New Day has dawned for today one of those Dreams has become Reality. Today my book “Dark Fey, The Reviled” has been Published!

Now, before we go any further, please allow me to assure you that my blog stands on its own. It is a blog of poetry and pictures painted with words; it is a place of Love and Hope, Peace and Joy, Beauty and Inspiration. It has not been and shall not become a place where I shamelessly proffer my wares for purchase. Have no fear! That being said, I cannot overlook the opportunity, just this once, to invite you to explore the world I created, the people I brought to life from my dreams, and the mythical mysteries and wonders in which they live. Please allow me to share my delight with you by providing this tidbit of information, should you so desire to read my dream come true.
