Touch the light. Hold the light. The light burns. The light runs away. Hold the light. Lock the light away.

The great spirit Vatu keeps the Sun in a box, where no thief can steal it. Once a year, the box is opened and life springs across the dark lands. The whole world belongs to Vatu. He is darkness, he is master of all. There is no hiding from him.

But Utas must try, for his daughter’s sake. She is sick from darkness, and yet she glows with a mysterious light. If Vatu can find them, he will destroy them, or worse, drag them back into his mad, dark world. Torn between duty and mercy, between justice and freedom, Utas tries to escape, but it seems inevitable that the darkness will reclaim him.

For the greatest mercy and the greatest punishment Utas can suffer is to return to his true self.

Author David Rae lives in the West of Scotland. He lives in a world of his own; a world of wonder, a world where hoards of workers spill out of factories, a world were fog and smoke shroud all kinds of creatures, a world where ruined castles, factories and houses were haunted by ghosts, gangs and memories. He lives in world where witches have been burned at the cross and martyrs have been hung on the Gallowgreen. He writes poetry and short stories and reads every trashy novel, every children’s book and every comic that comes his way.

David recently chatted with me about his remarkable story:

Is there an Author you consider your inspiration? Just one? I was that geeky, spectacled boy that always had a book under his nose. I’ve read and read my whole life. As a boy I loved Tolkien. I also love the classics. My current favorite is Amin Maalouf. If you have not read SAMERKAND then get a copy now.

What Inspired you to write your book? CROWMAN is inspired by the Native American myths about the sun being kept in a box and freed by the crow. Once I started to think about what such a world would look like, the book began to form in my head. I lived near the arctic for a few years, and I got some insight into what a world with no sun is like. It’s a lot brighter than you’d think. The moon, the stars, the northern lights and the reflection of light from the snow, all become very important. I even learned to tell the time by the position of the moon.

Although it’s often hard to select just one, do you have a favourite or least favourite character? In CROWMAN, my favorite character is MUKITO. He’s a young bandit boy who once he meets up with UTAS and ERROI changes his outlook on life. He’s not always the smartest, but honest with himself and in the end shows a great deal of bravery and resilience. The story would have been very different without him

My least favorite is GUTUZO who is a greedy, cowardly bully. He abuses his power and the people around him. He is completely self-centered.

Which one of your characters would you like to meet and why? In my latest project, I have a character called Tito. He is a bit clueless and gets into all sorts of trouble, but his heart is in the right place. He’s usually the butt of someone’s joke or victim of someone’s scheme yet somehow always lands on his feet. He’s sweet and innocent and very kind. I wish I was like that.

What is the hardest part of editing- grammar checks, reducing content, or something else? I am terrible at editing. I use all sorts of soft-wear and text to speech but I always miss something. The hardest part is not to get discouraged. No one ever wrote a first draft that didn’t need work. Thank God for editors, I say.

If you could live in a book, which one would it be- why? Well, I would not want to live in CROWMAN. It’s an interesting world for sure, but it’s a harsh world and it’s ruled by an evil spirit. Life is cheap there, and did I mention no sun.

What’s exciting you about your next project? I’m finishing the Sun Thief trilogy, CROWMAN is book one and CROWTOWER comes out in June. I’ve started on CROWBAIT, the final book, and I am surprised and excited at the way things are heading in that book.

OH I cant wait for these follow-up! Thank you so much for sharing some of your insights with us. I truly wish you all the very best success with this unique and amazing series.

My Recent 5-Star Review!

I was intrigued by this metaphysical dark fantasy from the moment I read the description. Uniquely named characters and concepts drew me in immediately and filled my mind with questions and lush imagery…a masterful book blurb to say the least!

Vatu, the great spirit of darkness. I could see him, an ethereal and all-consuming shadow intent upon absolute control. Utas, the hopeful apparition fleeing from himself, and his beautiful daughter who is delicate and mysterious. Their plight pulled me along. I was invested in their harrowing journey, their disappointments, their hopes. Symbolism and spirituality are illustrated like characters, filling the narrative with thought-provoking themes that made me pause and consider.

As father and daughter make their way, they are joined by a melange of artfully created characters: Erroi, the warrior, whose body and spirit are independent of each other and who travels in dreams. He is beautifully silent and deliciously mysterious. Mukito, a boy whose cruel stepfather has left him few alternatives other than thievery. The innocent Zintoa, and noble Eskanza. The characters are elaborate, simple, fully-developed, flawed and entirely captivating.

The narrative is rich with unfamiliar people and places, intriguing me page after page. Dialog forms much of the story, yet there are descriptions that whisk the reader away. Poetic tangles of dream-like reveries adorn the journey, some so intricate and imaginative I simply had to read them again….and again! There were times I wasn’t sure what was reality and what wasn’t and I was reminded of an episode of STNG, ‘Masks’, where the hunt of Masaka and Korgano parallels the birth of Athena at the Parthenon.

Mythological and magical, Rae’s Crowman is a masterpiece of epic fantasy, conceptual and allegorical fiction in which I would willingly immerse myself book after book after book.

I hope you’re intrigued and will take a moment to look David up:

I’m Tremendously Delighted and just can’t help sharing the news:)
Misericorde has won the Independent Author Network #BookoftheYear #Award for #Fantasy #Fiction!!!!  (Sorry, did I shout that?)
What does that mean, you ask?  Well, the qualities they were looking for in this year’s submissions of Fiction were:  “Vibrant covers, attention-grabbing openings, memorable characters, crisp dialogue, captivating and original plots, and climactic, memorable endings.”
What it means to me?  I joined IAN (Independent Author Network) in 2013 and every year I’ve watch other, well-deserving authors win awards for their books.  It’s taken 7 years, but to win this award is not only exciting…it’s validation that means more to me than I can adequately express.

5.0 out of 5 stars Misericorde

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 November 2020

Verified Purchase

Misericorde is set in the future, 2446, yet the story contains echoes of our time. Indeed, with its theme of us versus them, the haves and the have-nots, you could state that the story is timeless.

The story is set up nicely. With the environment damaged, resources limited and the first three of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse recent visitors, the Archangel of Mercy, Tzadkiel, seeks to prevent the arrival of Death.

Can Tzadkiel succeed and find a human who displays genuine compassion and mercy? And could Lourdes, a young peasant girl, be the key to his quest?

Entertaining and thought-provoking in equal measure, Misericorde is an excellent read, particularly for lovers of dystopian and fantasy stories. In addition, if care for our environment and fairness stir your emotions then the subject-matter will certainly draw you into the book.

Misericorde is an impressive novel. Well-written, the author tackles important subjects with great success.

In a future nightmarish dystopian world nearly 100 years after the Great Cataclysm, Lourdes is a servant at The Bastion of Resolution where The Eminent Protectorate lives. She hears horrendous screams emanating from Tower Obligar, the place of torture. Tzadkiel has been given 100 years to find one person who can exhibit mercy, and thereby prevent the Apocalypse bringing down the final curtain. No spoilers, but there then ensues a gripping and imaginative story (with a clever melange of futuristic fantasy, Biblical echoes and the sonorous tones of classical-novel storytelling) as their paths cross. Also exquisitely written. Recommended.

KS the Dreamer

5.0 out of 5 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Horror, degradation, and helplessness (I read on KU)

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 May 2020

Pestilence, War, and Famine have ridden, changing the world forever. Times of equal rights and respect had been long forgotten. Those of wealth rule, their servants little more than property, easily swapped when one becomes too damaged to perform their duties. Tzadkiel seeks to prove there is still hope, that one person in the godforsaken world still knows compassion. Should he fail to find one within 100 years the final horseman will ride. With just a few years left desperation envelopes him. He finds himself imprisoned, tortured for sadistic pleasure and gains. He could stop it all with a word, end his torment, end the pain that has become his existence, but to do so would be to admit he has failed. So he endures, hoping to somehow find the one person who can be redemption in a place filled with darkness and despair.

Cynthia A Morgan’s Misericorde is the first book in the Mercy series. For anyone who likes a read on the darker side, this will certainly be a good fit. Filled with despair, hopelessness, and an acceptance of how little one is worth, it is bound to tug on a few heartstrings as Lourdes situation becomes ever more desperate as she strives to protect those she cares for. Day after day she hears the tormented screams. Brutality and the worst of humanity are brought into picture-perfect clarity through Morgan’s descriptive writing while daring to offer a glimmer of hope, a suggestion of a fleeting and small light almost lost within the darkness. Horror, degradation, and helplessness pit against the very essence of all that is good, threatening to snub out its presence forever. You will want to read on, to see what fate awaits both prisoners, one a prisoner of life, and the other a prisoner in the Tower.

Emily and the Gnomes by S. D. Michaels

Biologist Emily Dickens is a conservationist who works tirelessly against the destruction of the planet Valencia and the near extinction of its wildlife. The battle seems hopeless until a young goddess from the sister world of Terra hears her pleas and sends out a small army of the most unlikely rescuers. There’s only one problem – Emily has grown up in a world that was abandoned thousands of years ago by its ruling goddesses. It will take a little enchantment and a lot of faith for Emily to start healing her planet again and sending its creatures to the only safe haven she can find.

A Brief Excerpt from the book:

Jabaz: father of all the gods, creator of all the heavens and the cosmos, journeyed through the glimmering lights of his universe.

He’d done this so many times before, making each of his worlds a little different from the others.  But this one, this one was for Ava, the youngest of his daughters, the most ambitious, and for the time being, his favorite.

“She wants plants,” he said, waving a hand and covering the planet with various types of foliage, trees, bushes, ground cover, and even plants to live in the water. “And seas teeming with living creatures, and birds to fill the sky. And let there be beasts to live and roam the lands,” he said, glancing beside him at his daughter. “And let there be no humans to bring them harm, but little Gnomes to guard and care for my creation.”

Ava smiled and kissed her father’s cheek. “Perfect,” she said, with excitement. “It’s just like Emily’s world of Valencia.  Well, kind of.”

Excerpt Description of Realm (Remnant: The Clans of Arcadia) –Farthest westward area of the Elohite ancestral home.

The first rays of light crept over the mountains chasing back the darkness and bathing the cabin in warmth. In the pre-dawn half-light, birds gathered in the branches of the hemlock growing closest to the front window. Their chatter noised through the house and hinted that an early spring might arrive in the mountain region between Erisai and Bardai.

Inside the cabin, the shell of the previous night’s firewood glowed red, and the warm scent of pine still lingered in the air. Its remnants threatened to crumble into ash at any moment.

Excerpt from book two:

Lilia slowed her breathing, trying to slow her heartbeat, then glanced through the clearing. “It’s amazing.”

Karn nodded. “Yes, it is.”

Towering trees covered in deep emerald green moss stood as sentries around the lagoon. Boulders of every size poked out of the water, covered in soft green and yellow hues of lichen, and the rushing rumble of a small waterfall filled the air. The lagoon itself was a deep blue sapphire, and soft wisps of fog rolled across its glassy surface.

Majestic flowering trees surrounded the water. Royal poincianas, hibiscus, plumeria, and hydrangea, created a stunning bouquet near the edge of the forest. The heavy floral scent of the blooming flowers was pleasant but slightly overpowering. However, their presence only increased the majesty of the hidden lagoon.

BEFORE THE BOY The Chilling Prequel to the Inspiring Moon Singer Trilogy by B. ROMAN

Even in death a mother guides her son through triumphs and tragedies to his true destiny.

Billie Nickerson must accept her own mortality as the only way she can assure her son will receive the intuitive gifts he was born to inherit, to save her family – and perhaps the world – from a disastrous fate. But learning that she has died too soon creates a Karmic crisis as Billie tries to escape the afterlife and return to her loved ones.

In this chilling prequel to The Moon Singer Trilogy (The Crystal Clipper, The War Chamber, The Wind Rose) we learn the uncanny circumstances that informed Billie Nickerson’s decision to raise her son, David, to become a seeker of spiritual truth.  As his teacher and mentor she gave him the courage to overcome his unexpected deafness, to excel at music – and to hear the voice within that speaks from his soul.

Though Billie’s life is fraught with danger and dark spirits, and the power that David acquires places him in grave jeopardy, the story is an illustration of a mother’s love and devotion that transcends the boundaries of the here and the hereafter.

*** Book Excerpt

Chapter 9

In the Time Between Time

Billie scans the staging area.  The auditorium is filled to capacity with people milling about in their seats with anticipation.  Only they are not human entities, they are spirits of various levels of experience denoted by their auric colors, ranging from shades of white to yellow to blue.

The orchestra pit is vibrant with violet energies, demonstrating through music the highest form of spiritual evolution.  Every instrument is represented, from ancient celestas, lyres and lutes to zithers, keyboards and horns of every type.

Billie is astonished.  “What is this place? Some sort of performing hall?  I never imagined that heaven – or wherever I am – would look like this.”

“This was your life experience, Billie. The concert hall, the musicians, the crowds.  Your spirit experience will mirror your earthly experience, until you are ready to let go of it.”

“Why are there so many different colors of people?”

“That’s where they are in their soul evolution, each one having achieved a higher state of  development through their music experience.”

“But why do I have no color at all? I think I’m pretty highly developed musically.”

“Because you’ve just begun.  You are white, Blanche, a shining light but a very young soul.”

“That’s odd.  I’ve always felt like an old soul.”

“A popular New Age expression.”

Billie appreciates her guide’s humor, and a feeling of familiarity comes through.  “I know you, don’t I?  I’ve seen you before.  Why, you’re that fortune teller from the tent.  Not Dorinda, but the other one.  I never knew your name.”

“Names are not important here.  I was on a mission that required me to have no identity.”

“A mission?  For me?”

“You didn’t think you were just there in that tent having a Tarot card reading, did you?”

“Obviously not.  But you, and Dorinda – you never really existed.  You were just a figment.  No one ever saw you but me, never even saw that tent or the sign inviting people in for readings.”

“As it was meant to be.”

Billie moves freely through this first experience, then on through various portals.  People that she recognizes from her Earth life are formless, ethereal energies:  an aunt from her father’s side of the family who passed on just before Billie moved to Port Avalon; a cousin who was killed in a plane crash during his first solo flight; a friend from high school who succumbed to leukemia; a teacher who committed suicide when his wife left and took their children with her.  Their faceless forms nod in recognition as they move along on their own personal missions.

Then, emerging through a diaphanous curtain, two figures appear to Billie.   They are old now,  their auras grayed by their harsh life experiences.  Billie had seen them rarely in her last years on Earth, living miles apart as they did, then finally parted by tragedy and death.  But now, as they stand face to face, all the hurt, the anger, the conflicts they engaged in, the feelings of lonely isolation they instilled in her, the insecurities and unworthiness they passed on to her…all those feelings come to the fore and she feels on edge, a tenseness even in this sweet afterlife dimension.

If I hadn’t left them, if I had stayed near them, they would still be alive.  Maybe I could have saved them from that burning building, from an arsonist’s senseless evil.

But then they embrace, and in their need for her, in their longing, Billie senses their sad regret, the apologies they can’t express, the forgiveness they offer her.  She melts into their agony and it transforms into her love for them.  Dissolving into a violet light, they are at last free souls.

She gripped the wizard’s hand as the light shifted into a multitude of colors and she continued to feel as if she fell, her skirts flapping around her. The colors spun and swirled, and she couldn’t decide if she felt joy or pain as wind whipped over her skin. Suddenly, the light faded and she dropped to her feet.

Swaying, she nearly fell but Bruin caught her.

“Easy, my lady,” he said. He smiled at her. “Did you close your eyes?”

She shook her head, grinning up at him.

He laughed. “I didn’t close my eyes on my first trip either. And I threw up when we landed. But you seem to be fine.”

Clara nodded, looking around. They stood at the top of a great tower and at their feet spread a gorgeous city, the morning light glistening off the alabaster and ivory of towering monuments, curved roofs of basilicas, grey stone and red brick of other buildings, and the haze of wood smoke overhanging it all. In the distance, light gleamed on the waters of the Lyn Tone River. Wind whistled around them and she gripped his hand tightly. Up above, a strangely shaped bird with a too-long tail flew.

“My lady,” said Bruin, “welcome to Bertrand.”

Amazon book description:
I might own a coffee shop, but it’s anything but normal. Magical and non-magical live in harmony, making me happy to serve them all the drinks I put my extra-special twist on. But watching Nathan, my ex-fiancé, sip lattés and ogle his new woman suppresses my seer emotions and puts a damper on my own love life.

Until Cole sweeps me up and dizzies me with kisses even as he asks me to perform a Wiccan vision quest for Nathan and his fiancé. I have to get over getting dumped or add two shots of resentment to my stinging heart—and possibly lose Cole in the process.

Heres a brief excerpt that describes one of the realms/landscapes in the book:

Nathan frowned, body a rigid line of irritation. “I wasn’t expecting you here, Jorden.”

Confused, I glanced around the magic-infused coffee shop I owned—The Top Off—and noted the smattering of small mahogany tables and brightly colored oversized cushioned chairs by the large bay windows were filled with customers. The view was normal for a Friday.

I turned my attention back to the Nathan’s hazel eyes and carefully coiffed golden-brown hair. “What are you talking about?”

He leaned against my counter, his well-dressed body one I knew intimately. His expression was concerned enough that I wanted to punch it right off his face, but I held back. I didn’t want to scare off my customers.

Nathan tugged at his ear. “We used to date.”

I clenched my teeth, unable to believe I wasted over a year of my life on him. “We were engaged.”

Arcadia is a floating citadel that has existed on earth for centuries. The Citadel is the home of the ancient Arcanian race. These angelic warriors once vanquished the evil on earth and now they live in peace. However, Millenium, a soon-to-be prince senses that peace is counting its final days, and so he decides to take the path of the sword even if this costs him the crown. This choice will make him face those who seek revenge and the destruction of Arcadia.

  • Brief excerpt: The floating city of Arcadia is a wonderful combination of science and magic soaring above our world. The city is covered with a magic cloak that makes it invisible for those outside of it. The city is fairly big, it has libraries, hospitals, schools, an academy for its army as well as a hangar. The royal palace has a garden with a small lake. The center of the citadel holds the mystic Stone of The End, a floating crimson rock that emits the energy that powers all of Arcadia.

Kidnapped by a Custodian
A mercenary for the enslaved
Possessed by a Regal entity
There are only two ways out spiritual enlightenment or death?

It is not until you step out of your bubble, do you realise your world isn’t everything you had imagined.

17-year-old Calista is a highly trained Supreme Warrior from the First Dynasty. A decade after the catastrophic Civil war, she uncovers the truth behind the Sixth Dynasty disappearance. Moments after setting foot on Kimarr, she is kidnapped by a Custodian with a strangely pale skin tone. She enters a world where the inhumane, power-hungry Kutawala enslaves her people. The more Calista delves into this new world, the harder it is for her to resist its temptation. She is thrust into the daily fight to the death and later discovers there is a bigger plan at play. She must become a mercenary for her people while a restless entity inhabits her body.

The man who issued her kidnapping believes she is the one to awaken the Legend of Bluka: the epitome of true power. The one thing she desires more than her father’s approval he can give her: the truth. With the lies unravelled, she must either accept the facts and walk the path of Enlightenment or die trying to survive in the fight to the death.

The only person standing in her way is herself.

Amazon Review by Xcalisha Johnson:

The Masterpiece by Chiemeka Nicely, was indeed that, as it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire read. This book is a mixture of coming of age and fantasy science fiction. Calista the main character is a warrior unlike any other of her race. She is special, but it is unbeknownst to her as she works to get the approval of her father by trying to show him her worth. Identified as a warrior who surpasses all, Calista becomes so much more after she realizes the power of her blue flame, which blazes within her. She comes upon a journey she never saw coming and with the help of others, Calista becomes a masterpiece. I enjoyed reading this story and hope to read more from this author. With this book, she has built a new world and has given insight into who we are as individuals, simply by overcoming our lowest of lows. The Masterpiece was action packed and definitely worth the read.

Chiemeka was born in London, UK. Her interest in science, African culture and issues in society is what encourages her to write stories that are unlike any other. Her novel and upcoming projects aim to enlighten readers and probe them into thinking deeper than what they know on a surface level. She created her own business Nicely publishing to inspire, incorporate her love for her culture, as well as self-publish her debut novel: The Masterpiece, book 1 in The Shadow I Cast series.

Torc of Moonlight – Book 1 of the Torc of Moonlight trilogy

Ever tossed coins into a “wishing well”? Who – or what – are you expecting to answer?

Sex, sport and alcohol are why Nick Blaketon escaped to university, but when pieces of his life start disappearing he locks on to studious Alice for stability. Drawn into her obsession with finding the shrine to a Celtic water deity, and drowning in sensual pleasure, Nick is in denial… until he sees a jewelled sword fade in his hand and knows that he, or some thing shadowing him, has held it, and bloodied it, long ago. To tell Alice will make her flee. To stay silent could kill her.

“…The transformative, menacing use of Nature is powerfully established… Excellent.”

“…The historical detail is immaculate, as is the authentic detail of modern student-life, the whole suffused with a rich pagan sexuality… Superbly gripping…”

‘Torc of Moonlight’ is the first in a trilogy of time-spanning thrillers set in English university cities pressing the North York Moors against the sea.

Excerpt:

‘It all just got out of hand.’

Nick moved off, turning in front of the campus Law building. Murray followed.

‘Hodgson’s set the teams for the morning. We both made First. Do you think you’ll be fit enough?’

‘Of course I’m fit enough. A couple of bruises and you think I should keel over?’

‘For Christ’s sake, Nick. Don’t you ever look in a mirror when you shave? Your own mother would be hard pressed to recognise you. I’m surprised you speak as clearly as you do with that lip. How’s the rest of you?’

Bruised but unbowed, though Nick wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of saying so. He’d been surprised he’d slept so well, that he didn’t ache more. That could be down to the double dose of painkillers, or perhaps his body was just getting used to the punishment. Perhaps he was getting battle-hardened.

‘The stupid thing is,’ Murray continued, ‘you and Medavoy act like the best of buddies now.’

‘But that wasn’t what the kicking was for, was it?’

Murray lashed out at a loose stone on the edge of the roadway. It careened into the bushes. ‘No, it wasn’t. But we shouldn’t have got involved. None of us. It was none of our business.’

Ahead the bushes merged into thicker undergrowth and screening trees; beyond could be seen the first blocks of Taylor Court. Alice lived in Taylor Court. Nick wondered if he’d meant to come this way and decided he had.

‘Medavoy’s got First team wing.’ Murray kicked at another stone, more vehemently this time. It cracked through the shrubs and a blackbird skittered out of the cover, shrieking its alarm.

‘Have you a problem with that?’

‘Only in the fact that I feel I’ve been taken for a ride. You might have a problem with it, though. Medavoy didn’t join us in The Sanctuary after the practice. We thought he’d stuck with you. He hadn’t, had he? He was seen in The Haworth. With his arm around Louise.’

He pushed his hands deep into his jeans’ pockets and looked askance at Nick.

‘So?’

‘Christ, Nick! She’s going to turn up on the touchline tomorrow, isn’t she?’

‘I’ve no idea. And what’s more, Murray, I don’t give a damn.’ He drew up short, reaching out to grab Murray’s arm and pull him to a halt. ‘Look at that!’

At the edge of the shrubs leading to the covered gateway of Taylor Court sat a mottled green and brown amphibian nearly half the size of a rugby ball.

‘Good God,’ whispered Murray. ‘What the hell is it?’

‘Well, it’s a frog, you fool. It was so still I thought it was a coloured rock. Then it blinked. There, it’s blinked again. Did you see it that time?’

‘That is not a frog, Nick. My grandfather has frogs on his allotment. I know what a frog looks like, and I’m telling you, that is definitely no frog.’

Ignoring his complaining muscles, Nick slowly lowered himself on to his haunches.

‘Don’t start imitating the bloody thing!’

‘It’s looking at me. Do you see it angling its head?’

‘Of course it’s looking at you. It’s probably sizing you up for lunch. Any second its tongue is going to shoot out, lash around your throat and drag you inside its mouth. The bloody thing’s huge.’

‘Keep your voice down. You’ll frighten it away.’

The Morschen of Anaria by Stephen Trolly

For ten thousand years and ten thousand times that, the Morschen of Anaria have dwelt in a perpetual state of warring peace with each other, wielding their elemental magic and training massive armies that all too often find their way to a battlefield.
Ten nations, who stand or fall by the sword, each with its own ancient and proud beginning, come together every year for a time of common council. For years beyond count, they have fought wars and made peace among each other, only to repeat the process a decade or a century later. But an enemy, long thought defeated in the great war that was fought at the dawn of time, has awakened once more, and his eye is fixed on the world he failed to take.
Will the one real leader that the Morschen have be able to see the meaning of a nightmare in time? Will his fellows be able to push past their disputes to name a ruler who can truly unite them? Will loyalties that have held for a thousand years stay strong under a new threat? Will a world ruled by magic and sword see a hero rise? Or will everything that they have worked for come crashing down around them?

.

The Broken Rudder was nicer inside than appearances suggested, having not only clean tables, but a clean floor as well. That being said, it smelled the same as the Mermaid’s Rock: heavy with tobacco and rum, thick with smoke, though not quite as much, and saltier, which she attributed to being closer to the docks and the ocean. Most people in the Broken Rudder had the look of seasoned seamen of rank, as if mostly officers frequented it. Most of the patrons wore heavy clothing. Oilskins for rain and seawater hung on a number of pegs near the door, and as often as not, the men had bare feet, though the rest wore tall boots. A group of women, clearly mercenaries, likely ship captains of one pirate fleet or another, with long swords or heavier cutlasses crossed on their backs, caught her eye for a moment. One woman with two longswords seemed especially interested in Edya, and Edya returned the woman’s scrutiny. They were all watching her intently, knowing from instinct that she would be a dangerous enemy if it came to a fight. Several people, men mostly, looked more respectable, merchants possibly, or ship captains. Quite a few were heavily armed with cutlasses and knives hanging from leather belts wrapped around their torsos. Once again, the owner was a woman with an accent she could not identify.

Stephen Trolly is a self-published fantasy author from Ottawa Canada. Stephen has been writing short stories and longer fantasy works since he was a camp counsellor at the age of thirteen. .

“So this is what Eternity looks like.” I felt the jaded disappointment in those words. I understood the sensation of wonder and the longing that could never be fulfilled. Although these words are spoken by a supporting character that only comes into the story in the second book of the series, they carry the sentiment of the entire trilogy.

Into Eternity took me on the final leg of a journey I never expected and could not have anticipated. It swept me off into lands unknown that were hauntingly familiar. As the dystopian landscape unfolded before me with horrifying clarity, the poignancy of this Vampire-Introspective-SciFi-Mindbender became all too clear and, like the masterfully developed characters that drew me into their tale, I experienced their terror, bitterness, and skeptical hope right along with them through page after page of plot twists that kept me guessing, literally, right up to the closing chapter.

Richard M. Ankers has woven a unique and unforgettable saga through the voices and lives of those we typically fear or despise; altering our own perceptions right along with the characters of this brilliantly penned epic.

.

.

Queen Serena and her allies have fled the Nordic massacre, taking Princess Linka with them. For Jean, it’s heartbreak; for Merryweather and the abandoned Aurora, far worse. Not even the return of a broken Prince Grella and a dramatic escape from an obliterated Hvit softens the blow of their loss. Tempers flare and the pursuit resumes.

Leaving the Arctic ice behind, Jean and the others must reconcile with both current and past deaths, as they close in on the Baltic home of the hated Duke Gorgon. Here, their enemies gather and confrontation is inevitable.

Under Merryweather’s frustrating tutelage, Jean marches from one infuriating revelation to another, but as the lies unravel and the truth unfurls, he discovers the Britannian is not the fool he’s taken him for. The enigmatic Merryweather appears the key to the greatest mystery of all. But will he ever show his true colors?

In the stunning climax to The Eternals Series, a brooding Jean must do what he’s never done before: place his trust in others. For only at the end of all things, as the sun dies and Shangri-La falls, will Jean know what it means to step Into Eternity.

The Singing Stones of Rendor by Neils Knudsen

Endowed with a magical ability not seen since the ancient Rendor Empire, life for K’Las just turned dangerous—and he’s not even born yet.

His parents hide him in plain sight for several years until they learn of a plot to seize an heirloom and enslave the powerful magical voices that blend with the family treasure. The family manages to escape the clutches of cold-blooded zealots from the Grand Peer that chases them to one of Rendor’s mysterious great henges.

A wild and shrewd wizard who hides within the henge, learns of the family’s secret treasure and vanquishes one of the zealots, but not out of altruism. He too is covetous of the powerful treasure the family holds dear.

Trapped between a ruthless killer and a crazed wizard, K’Las must quickly learn to control his nascent skills to help his parents best their foes. If he can’t, it won’t matter which of their foes wins—his family will surely die. Even if he does succeed, the hostile and unstable world order will not permit such unrestrained magic.

Excerpt describing realms/landscape:

A’wyn viewed the great henge with awe. Except for the mountains and forest, it was exactly like the Great Heart Henge near Kanarrah. She put her mission aside for the moment just to enjoy the mythical grandeur of the place.

She didn’t have to measure or explore the ruins. The historians had measured and explored all the great henges time and time again, though she would be hard pressed to call this one ruined. Each of the towering black stones was smooth, elegant and covered with delicate, elaborate, cryptic designs. On knolls at each compass point, north, east, west and south, stood twelve enigmatic megaliths. The great henge spanned a full mile with another circle of twelve megaliths at the center. Within the center henge lay a large, smooth stone like an upside down stone platter.

She liked the serenity of the place. The high mountains, cool forest and the sway of tall grasses in the cool morning breeze eased her mind. However, the place also seemed at odds with itself. The stones stood quiet and peaceful yet, brooding, mysterious and patient, waiting for something to happen.

Author Bio:

Neils Knudsen enjoys the quiet life with his wife among the scenic beauty of the Rocky Mountains. He and his wife, who doubles as his muse, are retired and maintain a relatively low profile. The only pets he lives with are his peeves, which his wife enjoys abusing. It is a mutual love affair. They laugh a lot.
