In the early 60’s, our yard was a magnet for kids from around the neighborhood.  We had a big back yard where kickball and baseball games took place all summer long.  In winter, the snowplows tended to pile the snow high right where we lived, and forts were built regularly.  But the big attractions were truly that – big.  We had twin sugar maple trees, one in the front year and one in the back.  Both trees towered over our 2-story house, so they were at least 50 feet tall.  I never took the time to measure them.  They were in the prime of life, so majestic and strong.  It was partly because of these trees that the Goodale Street Tree Climbing Club was formed.

There were six of us in the club.  My brother was the president, and I was vice president.   Believe that is because we were the best tree climbers of the bunch.  Living in Massachusetts, we were surrounded by woods, and trees were prevalent.  It was not unusual for us to get together and make it a mission to climb trees throughout the woods on a Saturday afternoon.  We loved to climb.  It didn’t matter what kind of tree, or how big, we were up to the challenge.  If the bottom branches were too high to reach, we would shiny up he tree to get to them.

But the silver maple in our back yard was our favorite.  It was built perfectly for climbing.  The branches were layered in such a way that you could easily climb it any way you wanted to.  And you could come down and out of the tree in a variety of ways.  My favorite was to walk right out of the tree.  Yes, you read that right – walk out of the tree.  Two of the big bottom branches ran parallel to each other, and you could walk on the bottom branch while holding the top branch until the branch bowed far enough for you to hit the ground. Of course, you had to be fast in getting off the branch, because once your weight was off of it, it would spring suddenly back up to position.  If you weren’t careful, you could get a nasty whipping from that branch.

One of my fondest memories was the day I told my friend David I could climb all the way to the top and stick my hand out.  If you have ever been to the top of a silver maple, you know that the branches get pretty flimsy up there.  He didn’t think I could do it.  Well, for a tree climber, that’s a challenge you can’t let go by the wayside.  David headed over to the back side of the yard so he could see me, and I proceeded up the tree.  The first 2/3 or he tree were easy, but as I got to the top portion, the branches were less sturdy, and I had to carefully maneuver my steps.  But I was able to get closer and closer to the top.  Finally, just barely able to keep myself from swaying down, I reached for the opening in the top of the tree and stuck my hand out.

“Can you see it” I shouted.

Ya, I can.  Wow.” was David’s response.

I slowly started back down that tree, proud of my accomplishment.  No one else had ever dared try that kind of a stunt.  David rushed over to me and just looked at me with amazement.

“Man, you did it!  I can’t believe it”.

“I can’t either.  It was a bit scary up there, and I won’t do it again.”   I said, a broad smile lighting up my face.

And I never did do it again.  And nobody else ever did it either.  I was the tree climbing king in that moment.  I had done something that no one else even dared to try.  And it felt good.

Youth is a wonderful thing.  We were pretty carefree, and a challenge was rarely left on the table for long.  It seems as I grow older, I take less risk.  I am more cautious with my decisions.  In a way that is a good thing because I have more responsibility and a family that depends on me.  But in a way, it’s a bad thing.  I am reluctant at times to step out in faith and share the gospel with people I come in contact with.  I have ample opportunities since I am in the insurance business, but rarely take those risks.  I sometimes wish I would be more outgoing with my faith.

Now that I am housebound with cancer, I have this platform to share my faith.  It has been such a blessing to me these past 9 months to share my poetry and thoughts with all of you.  So many times, I have received comments of how someone was touched by the words God gave me.  What a blessing to know God can use me to minister from the comfort of my La-Z-Boy chair.  I may never stick my hand out the top of a tree again, but I will lift my hand to God and worship Him with the utmost abandon.  There is no risk in that!

The Lark

The Lark upon the Morning Singing,
Would Blush and turn her cheek away,
To See the Love My Heart is Bringing,
Into the Light of Burning Day.
Watching there from her Lofty bough,
In the Ripe green Luxury of Verdant Youth,
Would she Witness my Fervent Vow
Of Blazing Affection, Proclaimed in Truth?
As the Sun Sails o’re in her Crystal Palace,
And Reality Bears mute Litany,
Stand I here, Holding Love’s Golden Chalice,
Testament to my Great Love for Thee!
Yet if the Lark should Sing with Beauteous Peals,
Her Melody would Declare what my Silence conceals.

Eternally Mine

You are Splendor!
Delight Personified!
Breathless Passion,
Intensified!
Handsomeness,
Utterly Fine!
OH how Blessed I Am
That You are Mine!

Time will Turn.
Colour will Fade.
The Blush of Youth,
Tempered by Shade.
Yet Your Charms, My Love,
Will Ever Be Fine!
Eternally Blessed
That You Will Be Mine!

Gossamer Webs

When Colours Speak in mortal Visage Tender,

Like Blushing Blossoms new on Fairest Spring,

The Lightest Smile of Grace would, Willing, render

All the Mercies of Thy Song to, Endless, Sing.

In Spirals Bright as Palest Morn upon yon Waking Hill,

And Timid Blush that warms the Maiden Cheek,

Thy Beauty dost Inhibit and dost Thrill,

While I, in Wonder Bound, Thy Smile Seek.

Thy hapless Dance of Earliest Season Greet,

As Golden Shimmers from the Crowned Sky do Fall,

Yet I would Abide, Delighted, at Thy Feet,

And Compass All my World In Thy Fair Hall,

But Spring does Fade as Beauty with its Ebbs,

And Tawny Autumn Comes too soon with Gossamer Webs.

Spring

Spring is Reaching outward from the Narrow Confines of Winter,
Painting the barren starkness with Light, Bright Shades of Green,
Bold Viridian Blushing Fair,
Newly Born Spring throwing back her Hair;
Smiling in the Scintillating Light as the Robin Redbreast enters,
Perching on the Fragrant Arms of Yawning forsythia to Preen.

Golden Streaming Sunlight Caresses the Blossoms of Rosy Hue,
Perfume of Youth and Beauty Lilting Upon the Jocund Breeze,
Brash Auburn Disappearing,
Amidst Spring’s Renewal, Cheering;
Balmy Breeze Dances on Twilight’s Coyness, to Infuse,
Tranquility Surrendering to Captivate and Please.

Spring is Blushing in the early Shades of Dawn,
Robed in Supplication of Winter’s Mighty Braun,
Hearts Unfolding,
Paradise Beholding,
Breath of Lilac Poised upon Delicate Denouement.

Whispering Pillow of Softest Air,
Embracing the Garden with Delicate Flair,
Reaching Tenderly to Take my Hand,
Enshrouding the Curves and Temptations
Of Land,
Speaking Quietly to my Attentive ear,
Whispering Mysteries I am
Too Deaf to Hear,
Rose Hued Shade of Morning’s Love,
Tempting Warmth Descend from High Above,
Stand Gracious in Your Shimmering Hour
Like Calliope’s Lyre, a Lyrical Flower,
Blushing and Delicate in Pristine Youth,
Revealing Sparkling, Enigmatic Truth.
Oh! Allow my Gaze to Linger There
Upon You Sweet Mists, To Sigh and Stare!

The Freedom of Youth,
Standing Preface to Deliberate Pause,
Like Excalibur,
Enlists the Brave,
The Nobel,
And the Intrepid.

Together Lifting Chance,
Hefting Purpose,

Caring for the Elderly

Sonnet V

Those hours, that with gentle work did frame
The lovely gaze where every eye doth dwell,
Will play the tyrants to the very same
And that unfair which fairly doth excel;
For never-resting time leads summer on
To hideous winter, and confounds him there;
Sap checked with frost, and lusty leaves quite gone,
Beauty o’er-snowed and bareness every where:
Then were not summer’s distillation left,
A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass,
Beauty’s effect with beauty were bereft,
Nor it, nor no remembrance what it was:
But flowers distilled, though they with winter meet,
Leese but their show; their substance still lives sweet.
….Shakespeare

time capsule

Love Blossoms
Touches
Reaches
And Transforms Forever
The Heart that Opens To Its Tenderness.

I wrote those words when I was a senior in high school, filled with hope, expectancy, and the clairvoyance of youth.

Back then, I used to carry a tablet around with me from class to class in which I would jot down snippets of songs, (duran duran and dépêche mode, mostly, with some Sammy Harris thrown in for good measure) scribble fragments of poems, or draw elaborate patterns out of the initials of some fleeting fancy. When one tablet filled up, I would start another, filling it to bursting with the musings and, often, the ‘confusings’ of my mind….and thus my blogging career began, long before I knew the word, long before there was such a word.

By the time I graduated I had filled four tablets, each containing 120 pages of memories, hopes, dreams, rhymes, reasons, treasons, and insignificant “doodles”. I saved them for a while where I could pull them out from time to time and reminisce, but after a year or so they ended up in a box in the cellar, locked away, secret, a time capsule treasure trove awaiting rediscovery.

Warp ahead several years (never mind how many!). As time and light bend around us, pulsing in the intergalactic void of the wormhole, we hear sounds from other times in my life, which we are passing along the way. Laughter, Crying, Shouting, Singing, Slurring (just occasionally!), Whispering; vestiges of the passage of time and the journey into knowledge and awareness that have ultimately brought me (and us) to this day.

When the spinning stops (no, I swear we didn’t have any vodka along the way…) you will find me in a small room filled with boxes, where I am overturning years upon years in search of words. (Un-poetically phrased, I am looking through a box of memorabilia and memoirs for a few things I’ve written that I want to share, but the latter sounds so much more enticing, doesn’t it?) Suddenly I stop and a broad smile curves my lips. I laugh, although no one is there except me (well, and you of course) and nothing funny has been said. I had forgotten, but here they are, all four tablets, still intact: 480 pages (give or take a few that the dog, cat or ferret may have eaten!) of a bygone moment in time.

Most of the next hour is spent turning pages, remembering, (or not) hearing old songs, smiling about lost loves, and raising a skeptical (or shocked) brow now and again. Ah the brashness and rashness of Youth! All the things I wanted to do, hoped I’d have, places I dreamed I would go, people I longed to meet; locked away in a prison of pages and ruled lines, trapped and disregarded. Then I stumble upon the poem (above) and I stop, amazed. NICE! I think to myself, I DON’T REMEMBER WRITING THAT. But OH how true it is.

Love Blossoms In the Heart, Mind, Body, Soul.
Love Reaches into you, finding that place you’ve forgotten or ignored for far too long.
Love Touches the place that is lonely, hurting, lost, sorry, sad, angry, guilty, fearful.
Love Transforms Forever in a gentle, unforced, patient manner; only when you are ready for it and only when the time is perfect for it to happen.
The Heart that Opens to Its Tenderness; opening like a time capsule filled with memories just waiting to be rediscovered.
