There was a small village, set in the middle of nowhere. While the rest of the world updated their Facebook pages, Tweeted, LinkedIn, texted, posted, and multi-tasked at a pace even Data from the Enterprise would find impressive, this tiny island of inhabitation, cohabitation and harmony went on in blissful serenity. Isolated from the modern economy by miles of wilderness and separated from the modern culture of Want, Avarice, Greed, and Self-Promotion. This community set its standards for excellence by different measures.

Led by a Chief who was the most honorable, who was just and merciful, caring and compassionate, yet strict in his moral code, the people of the village lived in a collective accord with each other and with nature. They shared their wealth, as well as their poverty, equally; they worked together for the prosperity of all and, when needs arose outside their sphere of influence they would make appeals to their Chief to provide for them.

One day a young man came to the Chief with a request of pressing urgency. Sitting down at the fire with this young man, the Chief listened carefully to his concerns without interruption, his kindly expression filled with understanding and patience. The young man, however, was fretful, distracted, impatient and tense, and repeatedly rose from his place at the fire to pace around the room or go to the door and stare anxiously outward, his emotions ruling his thoughts and logic.

It was not a simple request he was making. What he needed was not something to be found within the limits of the village and the price of collecting it was costly. Nevertheless, the Chief listened, understood, and assured the young man he would work diligently on acquiring the item, regardless of how long it took. He asked the young man to wait until he sent word to him that the item had arrived and he could come back to get it. Agitated and unappeased, the young man went away.

The following week the young man returned. His countenance was shaken; his nerves were frazzled. He asked the Chief all over again for the item, repeating much of what he had already said, never giving the Chief a moment to assure him that the process of acquisition was already taking place and it would not be long until it would be shipped to the village. Overwrought with worry, the young man begged insistently, growing angry when the Chief tried to explain that the young man would have to wait just a bit longer.

Another week passed and no message came from the Chief to tell the young man the item had arrived. Thoroughly vexed, he decided to set out on his own for the towns, miles away through savage wilderness, with little money in his pocket. He did not know how he would attain the item he needed, but he carried with him a blade that would protect him from harm as well as convince those who sold the item of his urgent need. He left his home, his village and his chief.

The very next day word came to his hut that the Chief requested him to come to his tent at the center of the village. The item of his desire had finally arrived; the Chief had worked tirelessly, night and day, to raise funds so it could be purchased, packaged carefully, shipped and he now stood with the delicate, beautiful treasure in his hands, awaiting the young man’s arrival so he could give it to him and they could celebrate together.

The young man, however, did not come. He did not know the answer to his prayer was waiting for him, because he had wandered away out of impatience and anger. He did not know that all he had to do was come back to his Chief, open his hand and receive it.

How often I am like this young man. Blustering, Begging, Bartering, yet often, not quite patient enough. OH! What treasures have I lost because I wandered away!

Whether you are housebound or believe all of the concern over COVID-19 is a bunch of hooey, one thing seems undeniable: Our world-wide society is changing and will never be the same.
The measures being taken are staggering. Entire communities are closing down. Fear and recrimination are building walls.  People are hording and hiding like some sort of apocalypse is happening.
Perhaps it is. Is Pestilence riding?
I’ve heard it asked “How can God let these horrible things happen?” “If there really is a God, how can he be loving when all this suffering is going on?”
It’s in our human nature to want to lay blame. Someone or something has to be responsible for the things that happen. Everything can’t possibly be random. Can it? I don’t honestly know. No one honestly knows, not really, not with 100% absolute certainty. There is as much a chance that the universe is organized chaos as there is the possibility that it is under some form of intelligent control.
It doesn’t exactly matter. Whether the Universe lives and breaths arbitrarily or with Purpose, we can utilize what happens for either Good or Bad. Positively or negatively. We can turn trials and challenges into opportunities for change or we can allow them to make us pessimistic and angry. We can choose to extend kindness or we can turn our backs and grumble.
Why do plagues kill thousands? Why do dictators rise up and subjugate the weak? Why do children starve? Why are the innocent exploited and brutalized? Is it because God is unloving and cruel?
Or is it an opportunity for us? A chance to choose love instead of fear? A possibility for us to grow and learn to be kinder, more generous, less self-serving?
Is the Universe shaking us to try to waken us ….
…..from our apathy?

A fascinating and compelling examination of the physical and spiritual body, Anatomy of the Spirit gives an in depth look at the relationship between the power of positive thought and manifestations of the physical body.I found the comparisons between religions both intriguing and inspiring, as it showed how similar most philosophies truly are and how, regardless of what we choose to entitle our beliefs, we share the same foundations of hope.Although it was certainly not a quick read and I found myself re-reading most sections at least twice in order to fully understand the complexities the author relates, I was truly enriched through the experience.

If you seek a deeper understanding of the intricacies of mind, body and spirit, I highly recommend this comprehensive exploration of what makes us powerful, successful and vibrant on all levels.

#FridayFantasy – Creating Positive Change with #EpicFantasy

Best Fantasy Books, Books to Read, Creating Change, Epic Fantasy, Fantasy Books, Fantasy Preview, Fantasy Trilogy, Kindle Books, Positive Energy, YA Fantasy, Young Adult Reading

A Fellow blogger and avid reader recently asked me about my Epic YA Fantasy Dark Fey, posing some thought -provoking questions that really got me thinking about the WHY behind the Fey. It being Friday Fantasy day, I thought I’d share some of the insights I uncovered through our conversation…

Is it possible to draw attention to the plight of child soldiers by writing an Epic Young Adult Fantasy?

Can Fiction create any measure of Positive Change?

Perhaps. Inspiration doesn’t always come to fruition in reality, and Hope alone cannot make a difference, but sometimes we just have to Trust and Act.

This is precisely what I did with Dark Fey, my Epic YA Fantasy Trilogy that not only relates an entertaining story of magic and mystery, but touches on realities in our own world. Yes, the plight of child soldiers and the horrors they face is part of the basis for my series, because, although I love to write, I’ve always tried to instill some purpose to the creations my mind weaves.

Dark Fey The Reviled begins gently enough. It’s a story about a young shefey discovering who she is and how to incorporate her unique gifts into everyday life. Like most teens, she’s uncertain and, because she is inexperienced, she’s a bit fragile; nevertheless, through the course of the tale she finds an inner strength she doesn’t realize she possesses. It’s also about a young malefey who has endured tragedy in his life on an unparalleled scale. He has lived through the horrors of abduction, abuse, neglect and has been forced to commit terrible acts of violence. His life mirrors those of child soldiers who face very similar atrocities, not in the pages of a fictional story, but in the reality they must bear each day.

Dark Fey Standing in Shadows focuses more greatly on the growing friendships between characters and how those relationships build bonds strong enough to face previously unthinkable possibilities, but, as in real life, strong relationships are built upon foundations that have been tested. The story invites the reader to experience how disagreements are the doorway to understanding, and how trials that challenge can motivate decisions to create Positive Change. It also begins to reveal the ugly truth behind the accepted norm. Expressed through scenes that left me crying after I wrote them, readers start to understand what The Reviled (our child soldiers) have suffered and continue to endure.

Dark Fey Breaking Into The Light asks the questions, can we truly understand another’s misery without knowing the extent to which they suffer? Would we willingly risk our lives for someone without experiencing some measure of their pain, despair, or anger? Like any good fantasy, this final saga of the trilogy sets the stage with dramatic events that test boundaries and push characters to their limits. Readers learn what it’s like to be one of the Reviled through descriptions that are darker and more intense than either of the previous books, but with good reason. I hope to elicit a reaction in the reader similar to those the Fey of the Light experience by showing them firsthand what the Reviled (our child soldiers) have suffered. I also pose the most important concept of the trilogy: The only way the achieve Peace is by becoming Peace. Through this thought-provoking concept, I open the door to an unexpected and powerful conclusion.

Fantasy is an escape, to be sure, and it is often filled with mystery, magic, and mayhem, where romance blossoms hand in hand with desperation we can scare imagine, amidst violence that both shocks us and irrevocably draws us into the story. Swords clash, dragons devour, lives are shattered, but inevitably the message of (most) fantasy tales is to Create Positive Change, against all odds and however possible. Dark Fey is no different in that respect, and yet, hopefully, new and different enough to entice readers into the realms of Jyndari to discover the magic and mayhem for themselves.

Its always rewarding to get a good review, but when you can see through those reviews that readers are connecting with the story of your creation and understanding the message it shares, there are very few words to adequately express such a tremendous sense of accomplishment.

My Epic YA Fantasy Trilogy Dark Fey has recently earned this lovely review by a reader that gave me such am inexpressible feeling.

“I thought this was a great follow-up to the ongoing saga of good vs evil… the author puts a twist in the tale that really makes you question your views on good and evil–enlightening the reader to many grey shades in what we previously took for black and white……I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!” – By JRW

The Tale Begins

When you Believe

In Your Dreams

.

Simple words, but oh so powerful, really.  How many times have you paused along the way because you had a fanciful notion, something you thought would be amazing, or Inspiring, but then, after a wistful smile perhaps, you continued on without ever truly considering the possibilities?

Imagine, if you will, if Alice never braved the rabbit hole or if Cinderella closed her eyes to her dreams and kept on washing dishes. What would have become of them? Would they have lived to see happier days, brighter tomorrows, or would they have slipped down the precarious slopes of despair?  Can you visualize how gray their worlds would be without the bright glimmer of hope emanating from their dreams?

Dreams are there for us to enjoy AND Believe in, or at least, that’s what I like to think. Too often they are shattered by the cruel hand of reality, but please let me tell you, without sounding like Im blowing my own trumpet, Dreams Really Do Come True, IF you insist on Believing in them.

Trust.

.

trust.

.

Trust yourself.  Trust the Dream that keeps whispering to you.  Trust the path leading you in a new direction.

Hope.

.Hope-Pierces-the-Darkness

.

Hope in the promise of a new tomorrow. Hope in the Possibility that lies waiting before you. Hope with your full heart and Hope with Expectation that the Dream you Trust and Hope in shall Be.

Then…

BE the Dream you Trust and Hope to See.

.

believe
