Rain.

It is a beautiful thing. There are so many types of rain, really, and I couldn’t tell you which sort I prefer more (unless we are including the fluffy, white, frozen variety that I love most of all, in copious quantities, as frequently as possible.)
Silver Greenery

There’s the light, misty kind that I tend to envision whenever someone talks about Great Britain. That type of drizzly, foggy rain that hangs over the landscape, penetrating every crevice, enveloping whatever it touches in a hazy shroud, and leaving ten thousand beads of incandescent diamonds in its wake that sparkle and scintillate when the light reappears. (Sounds divine, doesn’t it?) Oh, it’s also that deceptively inconsequential form of rain that doesn’t look like much until you walk out in it without your brolly.
Mists

There’s the freezing drizzle, or frizzle; that sinister variety of rain that usually arrives overnight and surreptitiously transforms the garden path, car park, or the front steps into a skating arena suitable only for Olympic athleticism. It’s that quirky classification of rain that warps and blurs everything into unrealistic, Photoshop-worthy deviations of reality that makes most of us grab our camera’s (ie. Phones) to record and share the surreal, Dr Suess-iness of it all. This category of precipitation doesn’t initially impress either, so you generally disregard it until you have to go out and then promptly wind up on your…..
Winter's Icy Grip

There are many classifications of thunderstorms as well. Those that pop up in the middle of a sweltering, summer day just long enough to make us all run for cover; the kind that create a lot of noise for 20 minutes and then disappear into a haze of steam. There are those that roll overhead in the hiatus of evening, fast and furious, full of sound and fury, (signifying nothing?) that do little more than make a mess, generally. And then there are those magnificent, cacophonous, tempests that jar you from sound sleep in the middle of the night with ear-splitting thunder and shocks of lightening that leave you wondering if you couldn’t hide under the bed with the cat.
Lightening

There’s also the awe-inspiring, stop-you-dead-in-your-tracks kind of rain that makes you stare out the window in astonishment, forces you off the road in your car because you can’t see one inch ahead or behind, and makes you wonder for a fleeing, transitory moment if there isn’t an arc being built someplace nearby that you perhaps ought to be booking passage on: those torrential downpours of cats and dogs (and monkeys.)
pouring-rain

Then there’s the steady, pervasive, day-long kind of rain that sweeps over the earth, softly falling hour by hour, never flooding, never rumbling, never wreaking havoc. This is the kind of rain that looks like a painting by Monet or Van Gough; that smells so sweet you inhale the scent of it deeply and can’t help sighing. It’s also that sort of precipitation that makes you want to pull off your shoes like a child, go out and splash in the puddles.
Gentle Rain

Much like life, we can’t control the rain; what kind of rain it is, how hard it falls or for how long, but we can control how we respond to it so that we neither wind up soaking wet wishing we had protection from the rain, staring in dumb-struck wonder at the rain fearing what might happen next because the unanticipated variability of the rain caught us completely off guard. Rather, we can stop to enjoy the rain, whatever its form, inhale deeply, and allow ourselves to be refreshed and renewed before we plod on.

heavy_burden_small

Seven days ago the sun was a stifling, sweltering, burning mechanism of destruction, blazing through the day like a 1000 watt bulb shining in the face of a prisoner strapped to her chair (while she sat under 3 fans and double ice packs writing posts for her blog because the A/C unit decided to take an extended holiday…). The humidity wasn’t sub-tropical, it was inescapably tropical and so high that another percentage point or two and it would have been raining from the ceiling; and there was not a breath of air moving (save for the fans). The hours of night were hot, sultry and not at all conducive to sleeping; not even the cat was happy, and there were more than a few moments when I considered moving my pillow outside to sleep under the stars (as it was easily 10-15 degrees cooler outside.) Even the furniture was hot (and unhappy)

Last night a deliciously cool zephyr whispered through the hedges, caressed the sun-kissed flowers in the garden, and slipped effortlessly through the open windows to saturate every room with a briskness that made me turn OFF the fan and reach for the extra blanket. Divine coolth permeated my dreams; the cat snuggled close, delighted, and 5 AM brought with it not only the annoyingly prompt peals from the alarm clock, ( that received the customary verbal assault and thrown pillow) but also 58 degrees! Long I snuggled beneath the blankets, enchanted by the chill, recalling humidity and heat like a nightmare from Hell itself.

58 degrees is by no means cold. It’s a wonderful temperature, really; just right for comfortable clothing and a snuggle under a blanket (without breaking into a sweat or having to throw your cuddle-mate over like they suddenly developed Rigellian Fever) (which is an incurable disease, but only on Star Trek), but when you’ve acclimated to temperatures in the upper 90’s with 90+% humidity, a 58 degree morning is actually a bit shocking. Thank goodness for heated car seats!

For someone who really doesn’t enjoy the summer months of heat, humidity, sunburn, and headaches from all of the aforementioned maladies, it is somewhat surprising how quickly you can become accustomed to conditions you otherwise detest, yet, there I sat last week, typing away in the (nearly) unbearable swelter, willingly choosing misery over comfort. (ie. Air conditioning)

Now that I am cool enough to think clearly (relatively speaking, that is) it makes me wax somewhat philosophical how so many of us (myself included, apparently) choose the burden over liberation, anguish over contentment, anxiety over peace. We stumble and struggle, gnash our teeth, and curse the sky, while systematically choosing to disregard or discount the resolution that would change our lives dramatically. Maybe we consciously make this decision, maybe not. Perhaps we fear the change more than what we have become acclimated to, even if what we have gotten used to makes us unhappy, lonely, angry, or physically causes us pain. Just like Hamlet….(you knew I had to sneak it in there somehow, right?)

To die, to sleep,
To sleep, perchance to Dream; Aye, there’s the rub,

Even Hamlet, fantasizing about how marvelous it would be to simply end it all, immediately fears what he doesn’t know, doesn’t understand, and, ultimately, changes nothing.

But what if you didn’t have to change anything? What if the solution to the problem was already right there, just around the corner, simply waiting for you? What if you could ask for the burden to be lifted, the suffering to end, the anxiety to be transformed into peace of mind and it wouldn’t cost you anything? What if you wouldn’t have to change anything or do anything to attain that measure of relief?

Other than ask.

Yesterday we had torrential rain for hours that resulted in this flooding. this is not a pond, but a stream swollen out of its banks. typically, the stream runs behind the woods on the left side of this photo.

And the rain, rain, rain, came down, down, down….and it got floodier and floodier….(AA Milne)

snow

July…BLECK! (I’m not entirely sure that is a word, but I’m going with it) This week has been the hottest week of the year (so far) and I am one unhappy little camper. Tuesday 94 degrees; Wednesday 96 degrees; Thursday 97 degrees; Today (yep, it’s Friday!) 98 degrees with enough humidity to make it feel like the notorious sauna outside (Or In HERE, Thank you Cosmo Kramer). Under these circumstances, being an autumn and winter person myself, I am not likely to be found out of doors under many circumstances if it can possibly or, with a little ingenuity, be avoided. Thank God in His Heaven for the man who invented air conditioning!

Unless, of course, your central A/C unit has burned up. Uh-huh, you heard me correctly: hottest week of the year and me with no A/C. (Weep for me if the tears will come!) Now for someone who will happily go for a walk in 30 degrees and flying snow, this situation is certainly not ideal, and for someone (like me) who has a sunlight allergy (It’s true, but that’s an entirely different post, yet again) and literally becomes ill if exposed to heat for any great length of time, the situation is more like HADES on Earth. Fans are wonderful, yes, and they are of great benefit when you are sitting at your computer writing with three of them pointed at you (as I presently am) and have ice packs draped over your body to keep you cool; still, when its 95 INSIDE your house…..(again, feel free to commiserate tearfully should the spirit so move you )

Understand, my wonderful sister and her family live less than 5 miles away and their A/C unit is working perfectly; cool, dry, sweet air abounds and the tropical swelter of July is blissfully locked out of her home, yet here I sit, (enjoying a free sauna whether I want one or not) typing away rather than tearing out of here like I’ve just seen a 6 foot tall spider in the dining room. One might question my mental stability (and probably with good reason!)

What the Harry Potter is wrong with me, You ask? Nothing. Well, nothing that can be easily diagnosed. The simple truth is, I love writing this much and I love sharing my writing so much that I would willingly subject myself to the tropical torture of 95 degrees and 99% humidity (OH please let it rain!) rather than go postless for a single day (again, not sure if that’s a word, but you all understood me so it’s staying…)

So if you ever find yourself wondering if you are on the right path, doing what you are “supposed” to be doing, using your gifts as intended, you might consider what is it that YOU would endure to do whatever it is that you want/like to do. If you find yourself answering that you would rather go sit in the A/C, that you would sacrifice nothing, or you would find the path of least resistance in order to achieve your objective, you may just want to reconsider your strategy.

(and now, if you will excuse me, I’m going to submerse myself in Happy Thoughts!)

Let it Snow! Let It Snow! LET IT SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
