A more effective prayer life, Building the kingdom of God, cancer recovery, Power of prayer, Prayer

I am convinced that everyone prays. Even an atheist has a way of expressing their needs to someone or something other than themselves.  They too need help through difficult times.  There is something deep within every human being that cries out for help. When trouble comes our way or when someone we know is going through struggles, we reach out.  Major religions around the world each have their own view of what prayer should consist of.  There are also many ideas on how prayer should be delivered.  Some require a set schedule of prayer, while for others it’s more a form of meditation.  Prayer is a vital element of the human soul.

I was raised in church.  My mom was the church secretary in a small congregational church in Massachusetts when we were growing up.  We had to be in church!  I sang in the children’s choir. Our family was involved in everything that went on at church. At 13, I was confirmed and started being a teachers helper in Sunday School.  A friend and I ran a small teen hangout in the church for a while. We were at church a lot

We learned to pray at an early age.  Reciting our bedtime prayers and praying over meals were the two ways we practiced.   But when I reached the rebellious age of 16, I wandered away from church and set out on a road of self-destruction.  Drugs, alcohol, sex, and parties were all that seemed to matter.  Church was ignored.  Even then, I can remember praying at certain times.  It is something that stuck with me even when I was away from God.  I wasn’t even sure at times who I was praying to.  I just knew I had to call out to something greater then myself.

In 1976, I made a trip to Iowa.  We attended a service earlier in the week.  The preacher had me convinced I was going to hell, and I knew I did not want to go there!  The night before I was going to head home, my friends pastor came to his trailer.  There, in my best friend’s mobile home, I prayed the sinners’ prayer.  I asked Jesus to be my Lord and Savior.

I was saved that night.  Upon returning to Massachusetts, I started attending that same congregational church I grew up in.  Two years later, on a return trip to Iowa, I met my future wife and moved to Iowa in 1978.   We were married by years end.  Three children and five great grandchildren have come along and we will soon be celebrating 40 years together.

This was a time when I really started to grow in the Lord and learn His ways.  I was focused on building a family and growing in the Lord.  Long hours were spent in prayer and in the word.  Reading through the bible several years in a row brought understanding.  Studying things I did not understand were all priorities of mine.  Seeking God for wisdom was at the top of my list during those years.  I became a worship leader in my small church.  Some lay ministry and prison outreach occurred.   I developed a prayer life, but I always sensed there was a lot more than I currently realized.

What is prayer?  When should we pray?  How should we pray?   Why should we pray?  How can we pray effectively?  I had so many questions about prayer through these years of my walk with the Lord that I decided to study and learn for myself.  In 1990 I earnestly sought the Lord with these questions and developed the basics for what I thought would eventfully be a book.  After finishing the study, it sat on a shelf at home.  Recently, those notes were found in a house cleaning session.  I decided to take another look at it and make it book ready.  Ideas and concepts were added that I learned since the original study. I used this on my blog over a period of a month to get feedback from fellow bloggers.  I was pleased it was so well received.

My desire is that together we can get a better understanding of the inner workings of prayer.  Many of you might know much of what I will share.  I hope all will gain new insights into their own prayer lives.

I pray this book will strengthen the kingdom of God in these last days.  I pray it will glorify God for the wonderful gift of prayer that He has given us.    We desperately need an outpouring of effective prayer in our world today.  I pray this book will start a tsunami of prayer that will sweep the church, our nation and our world.

I could walk a million miles or swim a thousand seas
I could climb the highest mountain or explore the oceans deep
I could lift my hands in worship
Sing a worship melody
But the closest I can get you is down on my knees

I could feed a hundred thousand or set the captives free
I could help a man in trouble or cure a dread disease
I could give to the less fortunate
The blessings I’ve received
That would not draw me closer than being down on my knees

Down on my knees there is healing
Down on my knees there is peace
Down on my knees there are springs of joy
Down on my knees I’m set free
Down on my knees He will hear me
Every time I cry out in prayer
When I’m down on my knees for others
I can know He is always right there

Help me humble myself
Put my flesh in its place
Help me cry out to you
Down on my knees in prayer

Loving Hands

There was a small village, smack in the middle of nowhere. While the rest of the world updated their Facebook pages, Tweeted, LinkedIn, texted, posted, and multi-tasked at a pace even Data from the Enterprise would find impressive, this tiny island of inhabitation, cohabitation and harmony went on in blissful serenity. Isolated from the modern economy by miles of wilderness and separated from the modern culture of Want, Avarice, Greed, and Self-Promotion, this community set its standards for excellence by different measures.

Led by a Chief who was the most honorable of men, who was just and merciful, caring and compassionate, yet strict in his moral code, the people of the village lived in a collective accord with each other and with nature. They shared their wealth, as well as their poverty, equally; they worked together for the prosperity of all and, when needs arose outside their sphere of influence they would make appeals to their Chief to provide for them.

One day a young man, who was recently married and whose wife was with child, came to the Chief with a request of pressing urgency. Sitting down at the fire with this young man, the Chief listened carefully to his concerns without interruption, his kindly expression filled with understanding and patience. The young man, however, was fretful, distracted, impatient and tense, and repeatedly rose from his place at the fire to pace around the room or go to the door and stare anxiously outward, his emotions ruling his thoughts and logic.

It was not a simple request he was making. What he needed was not something to be found within the limits of the village and the price of collecting it was costly. Nevertheless, the Chief listened, understood, and assured the young man he would work diligently on acquiring the item, regardless of how long it took. He asked the young man to wait until he sent word to him that he had what it was he asked for and could come back to get it. Agitated and unappeased, the young man went away.

The following week the young man returned. His countenance was shaken; his nerves were frazzled. He asked the Chief all over again for the item, repeating much of what he had already said, never giving the Chief a moment to assure him that the process of acquisition was already taking place and it would not be long until it would be shipped to the village. Overwrought by worry, the young man begged insistently, growing angry when the Chief tried to explain the simple fact that, although the man’s request had been heard, it was still being worked on; the young man would have to wait just a bit longer.

Another week passed and no message came from the Chief to tell the young man the item had arrived. Thoroughly vexed, the young man decided to set out on his own for the towns, miles away through savage wilderness, with little money in his pocket. He did not know how he would attain the item he needed, but he carried with him a blade that would protect him from harm as well as convince those who sold the item of his urgent need. He left his home, his wife, his unborn child, his village and his chief.

The very next day word came to his hut that the Chief requested him to come to his tent at the center of the village. The item of his desire had finally arrived; the Chief had worked tirelessly, night and day, to raise funds so it could be purchased, packaged carefully, shipped and he now stood with the delicate, beautiful treasure in his hands, awaiting the young man’s arrival so he could give it to him and they could celebrate together.

The young man, however, did not come. He was lost in the wilderness, miles away, and did not know that the answer to his prayers was waiting for him and that all he had to do was come and receive it.

An Easter Prayer

Sweet Heavenly Father,
Holy Lord,
Almighty and Ever Living God,
Creator of our Every Breath,
and
Author of our Every Thought,
We Give Thanks to You with Joyful and Amazed Hearts
On this Most Special Day,
With Family and Friends by our sides
And
Remembered with Great Love,
We Praise You for the Miracle of the Resurrection,
For the Unfathomable Measure of Love
Shared with All of us
Through the Life of Jesus our Saviour,
Through His Passion and Death,
And
Through His Glorious Victory,
Blessings we can never fully Comprehend or Deserve,
Yet which we Receive Today On this Bright Easter,
With All the Love our Hearts, Minds and Spirits
Can Offer.
AMEN

Inner Peace

.

Gracious Heavenly Father
Quiet our thoughts so they may Center on You.
You who Knows every beat of our Hearts,
Every Breath we take.
Hush our chaos for Your Love’s Sake
And Speak in a voice Soft and Clear;
Holy Whisperings that drive away fear.

Spirit of Peace, Bless the Weary Heart,
The Sorrowful Traveler,
The Lost and Lonely Soul.
Generous Love, Reach down from on High
To Caress with Tenderness when fear tries to pervade.
Trusting Joy, return like a River of Loving Light
To Reign in Triumph in our Hearts.
Lord of Love, Fill us in Blessed Renewal
Giving us Strength to walk in Abundant Hope.

Blessed Spirit of Life and Breath,
Creator before the foundation of the world,
Master Artist of the Universal Mystery,
You are All in All in All.
Eternal Word of Life,
Giver of Wisdom and Unfathomable Peace,
Guide us to Understand Truth through Your Spirit of Compassion and Mercy
So we may Live each Breath with Love and Kindness,
With Harmony in our Hearts and Your Melody in our Voices;
So we may Share Your Love, Hope, Peace and Joy
With All we meet,
Giving Glory and Honour unto the Most High,
Blessed Spirit of Life and Breath.

Lord in Your Loving Mercy we Pray

Amen

Touching the Divine

Feel the Lingering Breath of Day, Caress my skin with Smiling,
Under the Soothing Reassurance of the Golden Setting Sun,
Close my eyes,
Breath is Still and Calm, Sweet Repose Long Sought,
Birdsong fills the Deepening Twilight, Echoes of the Dawn of Time,
Darkness meets my Questing gaze in Emptiness,
Alone,

Draw a deeper breath,
Sweet Tranquility Reaches out,
Brushes her hand across my hurried thoughts and distracted musings,
Resting upon my Upturned cheek
As the Softest Touch of evening Unites with rhythmic breathing,

Deep

Silent

Still

Into the Depths of Quiet Being,
Transposing the chaos of everyday into Harmonious Liturgy,
Heartbeat sounding in my hearing,
Reminder of Precious Life,

Deeper

Quieter

Lingering Longer,

As the Gentle Touch of Your Thoughts finds me,
And Instantly I Smile,

Home

Blessed

Transformed

Time slips through the glass as Union breaks the bonds,
Unfetters the shackles of worry and suppressed fear,
Kisses my Spirit with Peace and Sublime Serenity,

Inward

Placid

Abiding

Hovering Wings of Majesty,
Love Falling like misty rain, Surrounding, Enwrapping, Invigorating,
Catalyst of Untold Alteration, Merging, Joining,
Tears of Quintessential Joy Softly Singing,

Breath

Upward

Return

Refreshed, Renewed in the Lavender Light,
Birdsong fading, Cicadas Droning, Darkness Falling,
Eternity Calling,
Deepest, Cleansing, Stirring Sigh,
Turning my Face Toward the Starlit Sky
In the Presence of all that Truly Shines,
In Moments, Alone,
Touching the Divine.

Breath of Life, Breath of Change (Guest Blog)

I wasn’t sure how to approach the subject of this post initially. His Nibs is standing by with a neutral expression, so no help there. For people who are unfamiliar with the inhabitants of my Shed, His Nibs (aka Anubis) is a regular visitor apart from the Trickster Hare. It’s been a while since the two of us had met up and perhaps our meeting on this occasion should have been rescheduled. I should explain that a horrible cold is plaguing me at the moment. Blocked sinuses, a congested chest and unproductive cough are testing my mettle. I feel tired and want to hibernate. Boo hoo!

At least you’re not so snotty now, I believe that is the correct term applicable here? comments the Jackal god.

That made me pause. He has a point you know, I should be thankful. My inner and outer worlds are in a state of flux, yet again. As is the weather in the UK and my part of North Wales. We’ve been battered by Storm Doris for several days. Wind and rain are engaged in a tense ‘dance off’, not sure who’ll win. The metaphorical bulb lights above my head. Aha. Wind, the Element of Air, voice, breath and prayer. Praise the gods! I have it. My musings will meander a little, so apologies.

His Nibs lifts an eyebrow and the White Rabbit/Hare looks up from the armchair with a surprised look. Let me start with prayer. Regardless of one’s spiritual path, prayer is an important aspect of the devotee’s life. It was most certainly for the Maya. Their gods literally breathed life into the people of the maize; they talked the Maya into existence. I find this image incredibly powerful and humbling. The writer, anthropologist and filmmaker Omar W Rosales, JD best known for his book “Elemental Shaman” commented that the Maya communicated with their gods through breath, which involved prayer, songs and words spoken in faith. Rosales commented that the breath returned words and thoughts that had originated with the gods in the form of prayers.

He also stated:

“For Maya shamans, it is the most powerful way to communicate with the gods. It’s breath that makes it special, because the breath carries the words from a person’s soul.”

Symbolically breath is associated with gathering spiritual power and yogic practices place particular importance on exercises using breathing techniques. These exercises enable the absorption of air and solar light. They also mimic the rhythms of the Cosmos with the in-breath and out-breath. Hindu tradition often refers to the symbolism of sounds, letters and words. The vibration of which tune into the rhythms of the Universe. One example being the syllable OM or AUM. It’s said to contain the entire essence of the Universe, “A” being the Beginning, “U” being the Transition and “M” being the End or Deep Sleep.

As I write this, the wind is still blowing strongly outside. Which brings me nicely to the symbolism of air and wind. The Element of Air is said to relate to three principal ideas:

  •  Being a medium for movement and the beginning of life processes.
  •  The creative breath of life (and of speech).
  •  Vigorous winds, associated in many mythologies with creation. It’s air in its active and violent persona.

It’s associated with the human intellect and though processes, which are considered abstract, changeable and quick. Air is the third (Tertius) Alchemical Element, Aer. It has power through a connection with the Element of Spirit.

C G Jung, the psychiatrist and psychoanalyst recalled that the word “ruh” in Arabic (and also paralleled in Hebrew) signified breath and spirit.

I did say this piece would be meandering. Such are the thought processes going through my mind at the moment. Only natural due to the elemental forces being unleashed outside. I’m sitting at the kitchen table looking at the garden and surrounding landscape. The bare branched trees and garden plants are being vigorously shaken. All that’s dead and of no use now is being flung onto the ground. Storms serve a useful purpose by pruning away all that’s outlived its purpose to make way for the potential of new growth. I sense storms have a particular focus and purpose in the way they operate. Perhaps I have need of this power to cleanse on the inner and outer aspects of life. There’s been a sense of inertia for quite a while, certainly on the creative level. I can assure you many prayers have been sent up to the “Powers that Be” for resolution of many issues. I promised to write several book reviews, complete assignments (related to spiritual and mundane matters), spring clean my filing, etc. The list seems endless.

thoth-33969_640

I’m sure His Nibs won’t mind but a little prayer to Djehuty (Thoth) might be of use where my creative, intellectual and mental blockages are concerned. That doesn’t sound right does it? I’m sure many of us can relate to a little mental constipation now and again. It has to be said, there is no other way of expressing this rather indelicate matter. For your information, Djehuty is thought of as being the magician’s magician. He’s considered to be endowed with complete knowledge and wisdom; said to have invented all the arts, sciences, astronomy, writing, magic, medicine, surgery and soothsaying. The Greeks designated Djehuty as being Hermes Trismegistus (Thrice Great). Anyway, what was I going to do? The prayer. All this mental exercise has quite exhausted me, hopefully this will help. This invocation is taken from G R S Mead’s translation of the Alexandrian text Kore Kosmu:

“Such was all-knowing Tahuti, who saw all things,
and seeing understood,
and understanding had the power to disclose
and to give explanation.
For what he knew, he graced on stone;
yet though he graved them onto stone he hid them mostly…
The sacred symbols of the cosmic elements
he hid away hard the secrets of Osiris
…keeping sure silence,
that every younger age of cosmic time might seek for them.”

That’s done, now for a cup of tea. Darjeeling or Assam? His Nibs squeezes my shoulder reassuringly.

Guest Bloggers, Poem, Prayer, spirituality

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
I know He will. I know He will.
He’ll keep me through the trial
He’ll keep me thorough the storm
He’ll keep me where I’m safe
He’ll keep me in His arms
I know He will. I know He will

He will because He promised
He will because He cares
He will because He loves me
He died my sin to bear
He will because He purchased my salvation on that tree
And His will became mine the first day I believed

If I should die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take
I know He will I know He will
He will prepare a mansion
He will wipe away my tears
He will take away my sorrow
And He’s coming back for me
I know He will. I know He will

He will because He promised
He will because He cares
He will because He loves me
He rose up from the grave
He will because He lives to give eternal life to me
And His will became mine the first day I believed

What He promised, He will do
He can never tell a lie
What He wrote remains forever
And His love will never die
I will stand upon his word
And I will not be denied

He will because He promised
He will because He cares
He will because He loves me
He died my sis to bear
He will because He purchased my salvation on that tree
And His will became mine the first day I believe

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
If I should die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take
I know He will. I know He will

The Light of the World William Holman Hunt 1851

The Light of the World
William Holman Hunt 1851

Forgotten first love, our hunger is lacking

We’ve left Him adrift in a sea of disdain

He stands at the door, awaiting the asking.

We no longer see what with Him we obtain

The Vine feeds the branch, but we want our poison

We’ve left Him adrift in a sea of disdain.

Hold tight to the Vine, we’ll rejoice in union

Yet faith is belief, expecting in unseen

The Vine feeds the branch, but we want our poison.

We say we want God, but there’s dogma between

He longs to come and with us break bread

Yet faith is belief expecting in unseen.

If we’d just focus on seeking him instead

The door only opens from inside to out

He longs to come in and with us break bread.

We’re filled with self-made doctrine leading to doubt

Forgotten first love, our hunger is lacking

The door only opens from inside out

He stands at the door, awaiting the asking.

As Children See (guest blogger)

crayons

Children see color as crayons,

beautiful art which represents

oceans, flowers, sunsets and dawns;

hues of people, this sight ascends.

Were we to see as children see

before the influence of hate

our hearts and minds would remain free

as we were born and was innate.

We’ve lost the purity of sight

and turned our backs on God’s great gift;

but if we reach out to the Light

He once again our souls will lift.

His love and grace and mercy still

are in our reach; do not despair.

He lives within us, that’s the thrill;

He always hears our silent prayer.

So wipe your tears, and once again

Remember you’re His precious child.

See others as your godly friends

Whom Christ has also reconciled.

One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could lay his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him.

But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” And he placed his hands on their heads and blessed them before he left. (Matthew 19:13-15)

To keep our faith with Jesus real

To honor God, obey His call

Means we must offer love to all so all will heal.

When speaking to our God in prayer

We often talk of what is fair

We sense a daily push and pull

Yet His love cannot fill us full; we must repair.

Our choice to walk with Him can free

Or keep us locked in chains, you see

We love our friends and enemies

Or walk away, do what we please; our destiny?

He said it best. “The world will know

Us by our love.” Yes, we must show

His heart, His light, though not our trait.

Abide in God, the Spirit’s weight through us will glow.

by Susan Irene Fox

(Chorus to song) God is great, but sometimes life ain’t good
When I pray it doesn’t always turn out like I think it should
But I do it anyway
I do it anyway

Thanksgiving is admittedly an American holiday, and, being American (ssshhhh!! Don’t tell anyone, ok?) I will be knee deep in the turkey and stuffing tomorrow, to be sure, but I’ve always thought that American’s certainly shouldn’t corner the market on being Thankful. And often times, we don’t (sadly). Setting aside a specific day to Give Thanks is a noteworthy tradition, regardless of your culture or historical background, but to surround that day with rich foods, quality family time and a prayer or two makes this holiday my second favourite. No contest. Continue reading →
