#DarkFey Standing in Shadows recently received this delightful #review
“I love the pronunciation lesson! I had a lot of fun trying to say some of these names out loud!
High fantasy isn’t my go-to genre, but a little Fey in one’s life never hurts even if it is dark. This one was the perfect length for me! I’m looking forward to more!
The game rules were great
:
“You cannot intentionally knock your opponent over the head; you cannot kick him, bit him, or tear his feathers out.”

.

Dark Fey: Standing in Shadows, book two of the Dark Fey Trilogy, delves deeper into the mystery and suspense of the tale initiated in book one: The Reviled. In book two, readers discover the history behind the main character, Gairynzvl, in greater detail as they learn about the harrowing life he endured among the Reviled of the Uunglarda, as well as the terrors of The Integration; the process of intentional cruelty and neglect designed to twist childfey into Dark Ones. Although Standing in Shadows reaches deeper into the shadows, it never strays entirely out of the Light, relating a tale of both fear and hope as readers share Gairynzvl’s challenges to return into a restored life.

Although certainly darker than book one, Standing in Shadows does not incorporate this level of horror simply for the sake of it. One does not need to open the pages of a book to discover the unthinkable, as the darkness typically embodied in fantasy genre stories by some terrifying being or creature is very much alive in our own reality and this is the underlying motivation for the darkness woven into Dark Fey. Standing in Shadows was inspired in great part by the terrifying, yet true-life events of the Lord’s Resistance Army or LRA, a rebel militant group in Uganda that has for over 20 years abducted children from their homes; forcing them to commit horrifying acts of violence against each other and their own people. These children suffer a very real Integration and, like the childfey of Jyndari, they endure violence, starvation, multiple rapes and beatings at the hands of truly sadistic overlords. This is how the Reviled came to life and became the horrifyingly cruel beings depicted in Dark Fey.

However dark, Standing in Shadows also gives readers the opportunity to explore the vibrant realm of Jyndari more fully. The action slows down and more time is spent among its many detailed characters. There are accounts of distant lands and exotic wildlife; readers join the villagers of Hwyndarin in a night of celebration and exquisitely described traditional music; and the characters even get time to enjoy an exhilarating, heart-pounding sporting event, but through it all, Gairynzvl’s purpose remains and the reasons why he wants to return into the dark realm of The Uunglarda are ultimately exposed.

Winner of 2016 Readers Favorite 5-Star Review & Recommendation

Gairynzvl risked everything to escape his captivity in the darkness. Now, despite the dangers involved and the very great risk of sparking full-scale war with the Reviled, Gairynzvl has an irrepressible need to go back into the darkness to rescue as many of the childfey trapped there as he can find. The success of his plan hinges upon the unique skills and magic of everyone who chooses to join his band of Liberators, and it will require a level of dependence upon each other for which few of them are prepared. Their actions will test all their limits, could easily divide loyalties, and will shake the foundations of everything The Fey of The Light have accepted as truth for thousands of years.

The story of Dark Fey is set in a fantasy realm of Jyndari, a world of beauty, magic, Light and Darkness. It is peopled by Feyfolk, winged beings the size of any human who are born with gifts of telepathy, empathy and sometimes magic. It relates how the Power of Hope, Acceptance and Forgiveness can change the world, if you take Positive Action to create Change through doing what is Right.

The only way to achieve Peace is to become Peace.

Turning the shadowy corner, she thought to press on, in spite of the many Legionnaires filling the encampment; crowding round its many sulfur braziers with faces half-covered to protect themselves from the malodorous fumes while hoping to extract some measure of warmth from the ineffectual fires.  Disguised beneath the veil of bent light she had cast round herself in order to traverse the dangerous avenues of the Uunglarda unseen, Ilys stepped onward lightly without a sound or any indication of her presence; yet as she came to the end of the street, where a black tent marked the Centurion’s quarters,  a Legionnaire in crimson leather strode purposefully into the middle of the street, stopped directly in her path, and glared at her.

She froze; catching her breath and refusing to breathe so not to give herself away as her mind spun, seeking some means of escape.  She remained invisible behind the ripple of light she bent round herself, but his crimson stare pierced into her from beneath a broad, brown leather bandana, which kept his shoulder-length, jet black hair from falling into his eyes.  In the mustiness and reek of the Bathracht encampment, he had turned the collar of his coat up and had cinched it tightly to avert some measure of the noxious fumes poisoning the air. He stood unmoving with his arms crossed assertively across his broad chest while, in an incongruously non-threatening gesture, his held his wings tightly folded behind him.

Hesitating long enough to make it clear that he was aware of her, regardless of her invisible guise; he stared at her fixedly and his crimson gaze sent a shiver through her.  Memory served her well, but in a realm where nearly all the inhabitants had blood-hued eyes, she could not distinguish him from the many other Legionnaires that had, at one time or another since her Integration, used her for sport or had been forced to do so.  Fear blended with anger that mixed with hatred within her, boiling into a rage that was nearly uncontrollable; still, she was not foolish enough to think she would be capable of injuring a Demonfey who towered nearly fourteen inches over her and whose physique boasted unmistakably of his strength.

“Yes, I can see you.”  His voice was little more than a hoarse whisper, but it sent a shudder through her that made her teeth chatter…..

Dream Stalker

.

He Seeks with Visions pressing in,

Darkness Spiraling through the void;

Whispers of Unheard Dichotomy,

With Dreams so Delicately employed.

He Delves with Diligence Unleashed,

Insistent where fools may fear to tread;

As Shadows billow in the silver-lush light,

Trading Impetus for stealth instead.

He Merges with Yielding Starlit Sighs,

Grasping hold without a single Touch;

Voluptuous Night expanding before him

Like mist curling softly, Permeating much.

He Asks through Intractable, Silent tones,

Taking All he cares to Possess;

Stirring the Nighttide with Succulent auras,

Tempestuous fury in Alluring Aggress.

Icy rain fell upon the inhospitable encampment of Legionnaires until the deepest hours, mid of night; yet when it subsided, replaced by seeking, numbing cold that permeated to the bone.  Those among the ranks of the Demonfey received ample protection from the biting chill in tents that were sufficiently weatherproofed, and these warriors were additionally supplied with warm woolen blankets and interior sources of heat to fend off the cold while those recently mustered, who were deemed expendable, were left to huddle together with a meager, sulfurous fire their only source of warmth.

In order to gain any measure of comfort and to avert the worst of the fire’s fumes, most of the new recruits covered their faces with bands of cloth torn from their already shoddy uniforms, but others were unable to tolerate the malodorous reek of the insignificant fire.  These frequently retreated into the darkness where the air was less foul, but being any distance from the conflagration meant they were forced to endure the permeating cold unprotected, which lead them to wrap their wings round themselves in a vain attempt to keep warm until the queasy sensation produced by the sulfur fumes abated and they could return to the ineffectual warmth of the fire.  Restively passing the long hours of the night in this exhausting manner, these ill-fated Fey greeted the gray-green light of new day with weary gazes and limbs numbed by the frosty conditions as they awaited their fate with the grim resolve of the hopeless. …..

A Preview of Dark Fey Breaking Into The Light.

.

Dark Fey Breaking Into The Light asks the questions, can we truly understand another’s misery without knowing the extent to which they suffer?  Would we willingly risk our lives for someone without experiencing some measure of their pain, despair, or anger?  Like any good fantasy, this final saga of the trilogy sets the stage with dramatic events that test boundaries and push characters to their limits.  Readers learn what it’s like to be one of the Reviled through descriptions that are darker and more intense than either of the previous books, but with good reason.  I hope to elicit a reaction in the reader similar to those the Fey of the Light experience by showing them firsthand what the Reviled (our child soldiers) have suffered.  I also pose the most important concept of the trilogy:  The only way the achieve Peace is by becoming Peace.  Through this thought-provoking concept, I open the door to an unexpected and powerful conclusion.

First of all, she’s just an amazingly illustrated Fairy, I love all her wings!  So, I had to use her in some fashion, but she looks so broken to me, fearful maybe, overwhelemed perhaps.  Thus the verse about the same.

Midnight ArcherB&W

.

Luring Zephyr of Silver Nighttide,

Glistening upon the bare Silken Road

From which my Musings extend

To Wander,

Piqued by curiosity while Shadows Goad;

Sparkle of Darkest Velveteen Sea,

Whispering in Lilting carols, Unsung;

Begging Enchantment from the depths

Of my Dreams

While the Bow of the Midnight Archer is Strung;

Piquant Charms

of Dilatants Muse,

Beguiling Suggestion

to Entangle and confuse,

Entreat my Unraveled Notions of shifting Thought

When, by your Tantalizing Ruse I am Helplessly Caught.

Staring down from the precipice upon which he stood, the young Dark Fey strained his vision against the thick gloom of the sky to watch as a group of newly captured Fey of the Light younglings was herded from the borderlands crossing point.  Even from the distance he kept, he could hear their crying and it tore at him.  There was so little he could do to protect them from what was to come and no way to return them to the Light from which they had been so mercilessly stolen.

He remembered only too clearly the first torturous days after his own abduction; the severing loneliness, numbing cold, gnawing hunger and inescapable thirst that filled the darkness of the cramped prison into which he had been hurled. He had not been alone in that chamber of horrors.  Several other childfey, even younger than he at the age of seven, shared the darkness of that terrifying place, but they learned very quickly that they were not permitted to help or even to comfort each other.  Worse, when no family members came to rescue them, the harsh truth of their new reality was smothering.

Although those dark days were now five years behind him, Gairynzvl could not restrain the shudder that raced over him at recalling such harrowing memories and he growled viciously.  Turning away sharply, he gritted his teeth with determination and swore vehemently that he would find some way to change what seemed unalterable.

.

I am excited to share with you the first few paragraphs of my newest endeavor:  A Dark Fantasy Spinoff/prequel (does that make it a SpinQuel?) of Dark Fey.  This work will carry the story further; yet share many insights into the main character’s past (Gairynzvl).  It will introduce readers to new characters, as well as spend more time amid the gloom of the Uunglarda.  For the moment, thats all I know, but its wonderful to find my creativity working passionately once again!

With the recent release of book three of the series (Breaking Into The Light) I thought I’d share a tidbit of info about Dark Fey: Standing in Shadows, book two of the Dark Fey Trilogy, which delves deeper into the mystery and suspense of the tale initiated in book one: The Reviled.

Standing in Shadows was based in great part upon the terrifying, yet true-life events of the Lord’s Resistance Army or LRA, a rebel militant group in Uganda that has for over 20 years abducted children from their homes; forcing them to commit horrifying acts of violence against each other and their own people. These children suffer a very real Integration and, like the childfey of Jyndari, they endure violence, starvation, multiple rapes and beatings at the hands of truly sadistic overlords.  This is how the Reviled came to life and became the unthinkably cruel beings depicted in Dark Fey.

In spite of the dangers involved and the very great risk of sparking full-scale war with the Reviled, Gairynzvl has an inescapable need to go back into the dark realm of the Uunglarda to rescue as many of the childfey trapped there as he can find. The success of his plan will hinge upon more than courage and military strategy; it will call upon the unique skills and magic of each individual who chooses to join his band of Liberators, and it will require a level of dependence upon each other for which few of them are prepared.  Their actions will test all of their limits, could easily divide loyalties, and will shake the foundations of everything The Fey of The Light have accepted as truth for thousands of years. Can Gairynzvl convince his friends and the Temple Elders to allow him to return to the Uunglarda?  Who will join him to help the innocent childfey who have been abducted into the realm of shadows and fear?  Will the Fey of the Light risk a savage war in order to rescue so few, and will any of them be prepared to face the consequences of their actions?

Whispers of secrets laugh boldly, yet are jealously guarded; staring like harbingers from her mechanized gaze.

Grace fallen upon unforgiving innocence betrays a wealth of calamity sitting in melancholic glee upon her shoulders.

Childhood sings from the devious shadows; hope smiling as she silently watches clockwork unraveling Gothic nursery rhymes.

.

I confess, I took a cue from Richard Ankers in writing this 50 Word Story.  I’ve enjoyed his for some time now and never thought I could condense my verbosity into so few words, but it was a fun challenge and you will probably see more.  Thank You Richard!

Blaylscith scattered in all directions through puddles of murky, gray water as a battalion of mud-spattered Legionnaires tramped into the bustling encampment.  Straggling behind the main group and panting with over-exertion, a second unit followed closely, but unlike the former, who marched in unison and carried their weapons with strength and purpose; those who followed were ragged and in visible disarray.  Many of these bore scars that stood out in vivid contrast against their pallid complexions and others nursed fresh wounds; a testament to their harrowing existence, which was exemplified when the unit came to a halt and many stragglers stumbled or nearly collapsed out of fatigue.

When the battalion of Demonfey ahead of them stopped, they stamped the ends of their spears into the ground or clapped their swords against shields as they voiced a growling, unified exclamation that echoed along the bleak way and sent shivers of fear through any who heard them.

“Raah!”   These were the Legionnaires of the Realm; fiercely loyal to their Centurion and vicious of nature, not only in battle, but with any who crossed them.  Their uniforms were spattered by the mud of the road, but they were in good repair; made of finely worked leathers treated with oil to repel water, and their weapons were fashioned of exceptionally-wrought steel by skilled Dlalth hands in the forges of Vrasduuhl, the centermost and chief city of the Uunglarda.

In contrast to this disciplined, brutally efficient regiment, those who followed behind were under-nourished, poorly equipped with second-hand, over-utilized weapons, and wore clothing that had been repeatedly patched, were soaked through from the pouring rain and distinctly unclean.  These were Legionnaires who had been forced to undertake their oaths of service after years of harsh punishments and deprivation.  They were the insignificant and the irrelevant; the expendable vanguard who would suffer the greatest number of injuries and fatalities before the highly-trained, ferocious Demonfey ever stepped onto the field of battle.

As icy rain leeched down in heavy torrents, the battalion of Demonfey were rapidly processed and sent off toward the tent where hearty provisions awaited them.  The remaining Legionnaires were left standing in the downpour with little thought to their comfort or the fact that several had fallen out of utter exhaustion.  Lying in the pooling rain, their needs were ignored by those standing round them.  They were all fully cognizant of the fact that any display of compassion would only result in further torment or punishment, but although they were weary beyond measure and, in spite of the fact that some had not eaten for days, they stood in the downpour with grim, mute endurance and waited.

Long after the Legionnaires of the Realm had enjoyed a satisfying meal, one of the Captains returned to those still waiting in the rain, who were now shivering violently from weariness and exposure to the elements.  Compelling them to undergo an inspection, the Captain first released only those who were still able to follow his instructions while he callously ignored those who had fallen or who could no longer force themselves to obey.  Sending the first group off to the provisions tent to scavenge whatever food and drink might remain, the Captain then summoned one of his Lieutenants who carried a barbed lash.  Mercilessly, he stalked through those few who remained hunched against the deluge, handing them the lash and forcing them to beat those who had fallen until they scrabbled, wailing, to their feet.  Only when all the remaining nonessential Legionnaires were once again standing, did the Captain give consent for them to join the others in search of any provisions that might yet remain.

This is a snippet from book three of the Dark Fey Trilogy, Breaking Into The Light.  It is an unexpected insight into the life of a Dark Fey Legionnaire.  Book three of the series is filled with shifting perspectives as both sides learn to See each other as they truly are, opening the portal trust and, ultimately………
