What makes you smile?
Is it a child’s infectious giggle? The braying laugh of a zebra? Good wine, Good friends, Good music? Perhaps it’s spending a quiet evening with that special someone in your life? Or maybe just having a little time on your own, alone with your thoughts? Maybe it’s being able to watch your favourite movie for the umpteenth time. Or a tranquil walk in a gentle December snow shower. (yeah, that’s always nice!)
Of course, for most of us, family strikes a common cord. In one aspect or another we all enjoy spending time with our family or our closest friends who are like family; so I am unilaterally ruling out that choice (or those choices, depending on your point of view).
For me (and my Smoldering Answer), (as if you didn’t already know the answer), what makes me smile most is words and the more complex the configuration and the greater the literary intonation, the better. When Hamlet cries “O Vengeance!” or when Romeo utters “O Trespass sweetly urged!”; when Gandalf exclaims “You Shall Not Pass!”, or when Mr. Darcy declares “In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” There is little else better, yet when such words are enacted by a skillful actor, OH how delicious phrases such as these can make my eyes close and draw deep sighs (and even tears!)!!
A simple question, really: What makes you smile? Yet the plethora of answers this particular question generates can be a revelation unto itself as those answers can reveal far more about us than we may realize. What makes us smile brings us joy; what brings us joy often guides our decisions; what guides our decisions can frequently rule our hearts; and what rules our hearts may run our life.
So what’s YOUR smoldering answer?
