#FridayFictioneers – Nothingness

She awoke with a haze swimming in her head and staggered out the door, then stopped. Walls of metal and floors of smoothed concrete met her gaze, illumined by unexceptional fluorescent lights lending the corridor a cold, antiseptic ambience and not a single sound whispered in the sterile promontory.

Where was she?

Her head spun as her thoughts reached backwards, grasping for the last thing she remembered, but emptiness pervaded her mind.  Blackness as empty as the corridor in which she stood.

Nothingness leached down on her like icy rain.  She felt numb.

Dead.

Remembrance Struck.  This was her afterlife.

Every Wednesday we get a new picture prompt for the Friday Fictioneers, a writing challenge to spin a tale of exactly 100 words, graciously hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. This is my contribution.

    1. This image was rather uninspiring…which is what I was going for with the story. Her afterlife is as her life was. Not sure it came across. I think I could have used about 20 more words lol 🙂

    1. LOL Thats what I thought too. I needed about 20 more words to really get my point across though…that as her life had been, so would her afterlife be. Still learning the knack of this 100-Word story thing 😉 But Im glad you enjoyed it all the same 🙂 Thanks ever so.

    1. lol yes I entirely agree. I really wanted to express more with this one…needed about 20 more words to get my point across better, but I think its clear anyway that if you lead a Nothing life, your afterlife will probably be the same.
thanks for reading and your insights 🙂 Im always happy to read what you think.

    1. Im sure there is much more, yet I often think the afterlife is what we believe, so perhaps this afterlife of hers represents herself. who knows. I needed a few more words, methinks lol 🙂

thanks ever so much for reading 🙂

  1. I want to go where Freddy Mercury, Prince, David Bowie, Janis Joplin, and… and… and… went. The bleakness comes through very well, a scary thought of an afterlife. It reminds me of the description of the afterlife in Sumerian myths. That’s not a place I’d want to be either. Great story.

  2. I liked this. It’s interesting to muse on the afterlife, will it be an extension of your life as it is, so if it’s empty will the afterlife be too. If you’ve inflicted pain on others will those pains be put back on you? Are you stuck doing whatever you were doing when you died? i.e. might you end up in a never ending game of scrabble? The possibilities are boundless.

  3. Reminds me of Zbigniew Herberts’ poem Report from Paradise:
As it is now every Saturday at noon
    sirens sweetly bellow
and from the factories go the heavenly proletarians
awkwardly under their arms they carry their wings like violins
    Great writing Morgan!
